At 12 years old, Smudge found herself at our North Melbourne shelter after her owner sadly passed away.

Smudge will need some extra comforting and TLC while she settles into a new home as she is still grieving the loss of her family.
Like many other older cats, Smudge has some age-related medical conditions which our incredible vet team can talk you through, but don't worry, these are not affecting her ability to live a perfectly happy and fulfilled life!

If you think you can put the happiness back in this gorgeous kitty’s life please visit us at our North Melbourne shelter today.

**Please note our adoptions centres at North Melbourne and Cranbourne will be closed for the Melbourne Cup public holiday on Tuesday November 5.

After 196 days of waiting for his forever home, Samuel has been adopted!

Ruby and Hudson saw Samuel’s story online and knew they had to come and visit him at our North Melbourne shelter. Hudson tells us that as soon as they saw his story online they said to one another “he is the one”.

From the moment Samuel met Ruby and Hudson it was obvious he was the missing part of their family. “It was just meant to be,” Ruby tells us, “he’s such an angel, he’s adorable.”

We’re so happy for Samuel, Ruby and Hudson and wish them the best life ever!

Senior pets are often overlooked because of their age, but we can assure you that senior pets have just as much love to give and are just as deserving of a forever home.

Meet Priscilla, Smudge, Maverick and Kelly who are all hoping to find their forever homes. They’d love nothing more than to nap their days away while loving all the attention and treats you have to give them!

If you’re thinking of adopting please head into our shelters during opening hours and meet these sweethearts today.

Last week we introduced you to Samuel and sadly, he’s still waiting for his forever home. Samuel is finding shelter life pretty stressful so we would love nothing more than to see this angel in his forever home as soon as possible.

One year old Samuel found himself at our North Melbourne shelter back in April after his family was no longer able to look after him.

Samuel loves nothing more than to run around with a tennis ball and show off his handshaking skills! Food is one of Samuel’s biggest motivators and he loves playing with his food puzzles.

Samuel has been working with our behaviour team to build up his confidence when being left alone and so would prefer his humans to be home more often than not.

Samuel is available for a meet and greet Monday - Friday during opening hours at our North Melbourne shelter!

Two months ago we gave you the fantastic news that Atticus had found a new home.

His parents Susan and Paul shared this beautiful update with us over the weekend.

“After being found clinging to life this year, Atticus is enjoying his new home in East Gippsland including country walks and drives and he loves playing with other dogs at doggie day care,’’ said Susan.

“Atticus has reached an ideal weight and we are working on his fitness. He is such a quirky, affectionate and funny boy and he loves his couch/bed more than anything.”

Good boy Atticus!!

After arriving at our North Melbourne shelter our vets sprung into immediate action making sure Scooby was given every chance to recover.
Scooby surprised everyone with his quick and brave recovery and is now ready to put the past behind him and find his happily ever after.
This beautiful boy loves his toys, snacks and lots of affection.

So if you’re ready to be the Shaggy in Scooby’s world, please visit our North Melbourne shelter today.

Last month we introduced you to Rufus, who had been searching for his forever home for over 170 days and we’re thrilled to let you know Rufus has been adopted!

Rufus’ new dad James tells us that Rufus has settled in wonderfully to his forever home. “He cuddled up to all of us right away, he’s such a friendly loveable dog and we love him so much,” says James.

Since getting home, Rufus has been playing with his new family, eating lots of treats and napping on the couch. “The kids love him, he’s such a character,” James says.

We’re so happy for Rufus and his new family and thank you to everyone who shared his story!

We are here at our North Melbourne shelter with our most senior resident Calliope.

It’s National Seniors Month and we want to give a shout to all our older pets who are often overlooked by their younger friends in the shelter.
Calliope is 13-years-old and was found on the streets alone and not feeling too well.

Our vet and shelter team have nursed her back to health and after spending some time in foster Calliope is now ready to find her retirement home and we are hoping you will help us find her the most wonderful home.

There are many older pets at The Home that are in need of a loving home and each and every one of them deserve love, affection and the best of care.

So if you are in the position to adopt a senior pet, check them out on dogshome.com or visit our North Melbourne and Cranbourne shelters during opening hours.

Update: Bilbo Waggins has been adopted!!

Two year old Bilbo Waggins has been searching for his forever home for 148 days.

Bilbo can be a little overwhelmed when meeting new people so he’s looking for a family that will be patient and take things slow to help him build up his confidence. Once Bilbo is comfortable around you he is the biggest cuddle bug you’ll ever meet, he’ll want to sit on your lap and give you lots of kisses.

Bilbo has made a lot of doggy friends while at the shelter and would love to go to a home with a furry friend pending a successful meet and greet!

148 days is too long to be without a home, so if you think Bilbo Waggins is the one for you, please head into our North Melbourne shelter Monday - Friday for a meet and greet!

We’ve got a feel good story for your Saturday morning!

Back in September, Fish was brought to the Home as a stray, she was scared, shut down and wasn’t sure about being handled. With a lot of patience, love and treats from our team, Fish slowly learnt to trust us and she showed us her smoochy personality!

It wasn’t long before Fish found her forever home where she demands cuddles every day! Her new family tell us “Fish has been the joy we’ve missed for a while”.

We’re so happy for Fish and her new family and with them all the best!

03/10/2024

As we mark World Animal Day today, it is important that we stop to not only celebrate animals but mark the challenges that we face in protecting and caring for those that come through our doors.

This year’s theme is The World Is Their Home Too and as in previous years gone by, the Home is committed to being a strong and fierce advocate for those that need it the most.

With the warmer weather already underway signaling kitten breeding season, the Home has already seen a significant increase in pregnant cats making their way to our shelters. And pretty soon that will translate to hundreds of kittens needing special care. Sadly there will be thousands on the streets homeless without the love and care they deserve.

So this World Animal Day, we are calling on animal lovers to spread the message about the importance of desexing your pets. Together we can end homelessness for animals that are the result of over breeding.

Animals depend on our kindness and compassion to be their voice, and the Home will continue to always seek the best possible outcomes for all animals that come into our care.

The Lost Dogs’ Home is launching Victoria’s biggest pet vet survey!

The cost of living crisis is forcing vet business to increase prices to cover costs and we understand this is making it difficult for people to pay their vet bills.

We want to hear from you about your experiences paying vet bills.
The survey results will help us to advocate for and develop low-cost vet services for people and their pets doing it tough.

This includes the Lost Dogs’ Home Mobile Low Cost Vet Clinic, which will launch in the second half of 2025.

Please share your opinion via dogshome.com

It’s a rainy and soggy day in Melbourne so perfect to visit our cat adoption centre and meet some of our lovely cats including Bandit!

Bandit needs some help with her weight as she loves her food and treats just a little too much.

This big girl with a big heart arrived at our shelter almost a month ago after her family couldn’t look after her anymore.

Bandit will be turning 7 next month and we are looking for a special person or family to celebrate her special day with her in a forever home.

She will need help from her new family to manage her weight and take some pressure off her tiny little legs.

So if you can help us find Bandit a home, please share her gorgeous face with your family and friends and lets help find Bandit a home!

Our volunteers are a crucial part of our shelter, from dog walking, to enrichment and even helping out doing the laundry.

Linda has been volunteering in our laundry room for about two and a half years, although it’s not the most glamorous job, Linda knows she’s making a difference in our animals lives. “It’s such a necessary job. I think about all the laundry that needs to be cleaned for these animals to be warm and comfortable and that keeps me coming back.”

Linda is passionate about animal welfare and has a dog, Harry who she adopted from The Home and a cat named Cleo, she also has a black belt in Jiu Jitsu!

“I never thought about doing laundry as a volunteer job, someone’s got to do the dirty work and knowing that the animals can be comfortable and warm because of my work is an amazing feeling,” Linda tells us.

A massive thank you to Linda and all of our volunteers at The Home!
