Bird City

Bird City We are a bird specialty pet shop, independently owned and managed for over 25 years. This is a one s BIRDCITY is the complete avian centre. SPECIALISATION.
(15)

It is the place to go if you are looking for a wide selection of healthy aviary and pet birds as well as all things possible for your bird’s needs. So what sets BIRDCITY apart from other pet stores? I specialize in birds and have not diversified into other animal lines for a very good reason. BIRDCITY is the only remaining specialized bird store in metropolitan Melbourne. SOUND BIRD HUSBANDRY ADVI

CE. I am a strong advocate of proper bird husbandry. With every bird, toy, cage or food purchase, customers are given all the advice they need to ensure they meet all the bird’s requirements for continued good health and well-being. Birds have been my passion for 40 years so the advice I provide is absolute gold! BIRD BEHAVIOURALIST. I know how their brains work. This I have come to know from direct personal experience, a wealth of reading material and from just observing them. They tell you all that you need to know – you just have to be able to read the signs. They cannot speak words but their actions speak volumes. I also provide one on one consultations (by appointment only) with you and your pet bird to create understanding and awareness of the quirks of a pet parrot. OUR SELECTION CATERS FOR THE ENTIRE SPECTRUM. Cages catering for a single budge or a macaw – and our selection of toys are unbeatable and of the highest quality for the safety of your bird. You will not find any cheap $2 toys here for a very good reason. SPECIALISED SEED MIXES AND TREATS. After years of trialing on my own parrots, I have developed a specialized blend of seed mixes for finches, canaries and parrots of every size. I make a point of sourcing only Australian grown seed for these blends. It must taste pretty good as I have some customers that have birds which will only eat my mixes and would rather starve than eat supermarket seed! We also carry a new line of organic treat foods (BIRDZONE). One of our most popular line are muffins you can bake and share with your pet parrot (these are both human and bird safe). PROMOTING BIRD-KEEPING FOR CONSERVATION. I am particularly interested in encouraging children to continue the interest in bird keeping. By keeping birds, children come to create an awareness for themselves of the greater world around them and the role that birds play in keeping our environment healthy and balanced. Sadly, there are too many Australian parrots that will cease to exist in the wild within this decade. If we could continue to breed these species in captivity, at least there is a possibility of their continued survival. SO HOW DO YOU FIND US? However, after 30 years on the same site (99 Bakers Road, Coburg North) BIRDCITY will be moving to new premises at 651 HIGH STREET, PRESTON and re-opening on 15 January 2015. For those of you that know Cocky, I am certain he has understood that there are big changes afoot. He has never asked me this question before, but one morning not long after I received the news of the move he asked ‘Are you alright love?’ It brought tears to my eyes as I wondered how this move was going to unfold. He must clearly have sensed my anxiety. Since then, he has been particularly noisy - morning, noon and night. I just wonder what his brain is making of all this. I sense that these major changes that he is seeing is making him feel insecure. I am doing all in my power to make him happy as we go through this transition. Stay tuned for further news on the BIRDCITY re-location.

Very sadly, I need to advise you of an on-line scam for those purchasing birds on line, particularly African Greys. I have received two calls - one from New Zealand and the other from Queensland - advising that a PERSON IS IMPERSONATING ME (using my personal name and my business name) through a GMAIL account selling African Greys. THIS IS A FRAUD. DO NOT ENGAGE WITH THIS PERSON - THIS WOMAN HAS NO AFFILIATION WITH ME OR MY BUSINESS AND I COMPLETELY DENOUNCE THIS FRAUDULENT ACTIVITY. THE POLICE HAVE BEEN CONTACTED.

Our very best wishes of peace and goodwill to all for the coming Easter. We will be taking a few days off - so please don't visit us birdies on Good Friday or Easter Sunday as we will be having a well deserved sleep in! Open on Easter Saturday and Easter Monday from 10.00 - 3.00. Lots of love, BC residents.

A big thank you to those customers who got in touch following the fire on Friday morning in our local area. All the birdies are well and safe - our great air purifier kept the smoke at bay and of course Monika was in the building attempting to manage the birds and their stress levels. A very difficult job given what was happening around us that day. This story may not have turned out well if not for the tremendous work of the FIRE BRIGADE AND FIRE RESCUE CREWS who managed to contain the fire from spreading further, and thankfully avoiding an evacuation of our birds. THANK YOU TO YOU ALL AS WELL AS THE SUPPORT GROUPS WHO CAME TO SUPPORT THE FIREMEN IN THEIR WORK. We are very grateful, but at the same time also saddened by the loss of our neighbour's long standing business.

It is with great sadness that we advise that our 96 year old Sulphur-Crested Cockatoo - COCKY - passed away in late September 2020. The loss of our much loved shop mascot has been overwhelming -
he has been a constant in our lives for the last 30 years and he is greatly missed each and every day. The sight of his empty cage still brings tears to our eyes as we remember his amazing antics and his prolific speech. We will no longer hear the words 'Come over here right now' or 'Get back to work you bludger' booming through the shop. What an amazing life you have led COCKY - we are blessed to have you in our lives for so long and for showing us so much love. You did not have the capacity to use your wings to fly in this life so we hope that you now find yourself flying high with your old buddy IVAN (also a shop mascot who passed away over 15 years ago at the ripe old age of 98). Just some recent photos to remember you COCKY - we still love and miss you old man!

With the transition to the NBN, we find ourselves without a phone now for a few days - Not happy Jan! Thank you Telstra for your excellent customer service.

We are sorry that you can't contact us but rest assured that we are here 6 days a week (closed Wed) from 10.00 am - 2.00 pm. We are continuing with our COVID trading hours at this time.

05/08/2020

IMPACT OF STAGE 4 RESTRICTIONS
In line with recent Victorian Government announcements regarding Stage 4 ‘Stay at Home’ restrictions, BIRD CITY is a workplace in a permitted industry (AGRICULTURE) allowing us to stay open for ‘work on site’ as permitted workers.

However, as an agricultural retailer we find that we are not permitted to allow the public on site and to wander through our premises.

So what does that mean for our valued customers who rely on our essential feedstock and other supplies for their livestock and pets?

We will be on-site to serve you 6 days a week (closed Wed) from 10.00 am to 2.00 pm only – but we will only be able to do so at the front door.

For those who are not able to visit the store due to travel restrictions, we ask that you give us a call during these hours on 9470 4499 so that we can organise alternate arrangements to get those essential supplies to you. Please be patient if we don’t answer your call straight away – it means that either we are on another call or attending to customers at the door.

We thank you for your continued support, patience and understanding during this challenging time. Stay safe and see you all on the other side!!!

From the BC Team and all your feathered friends

UPDATE ON TRADING HOURS DURING THIS TIME
In anticipation of a coming lock-down, we will be severely cutting our trading hours as of Monday 30 March 2020. We will only be on premises from 10.00 am to 2.00 pm, primarily to feed the birds and to keep the premises in good clean condition as well as socialise the birds as much as possible. We will only be transacting through the grill - signs will be posted on the door enforcing a 2 metre physical distance rule. Will update you with further information as it unfolds. Keep safe. Kind regards, BC Team

COVID-19 BIRD CITY UPDATE
In order to keep our customers and ourselves as safe as possible during this health crisis, we will be asking our clients to comply with the social distancing requirements mandated by Government.

Given the size of our store, we will be directing customer flows and we may ask clients to wait outside the door if there are too many people in the store.

We thank you in advance for your understanding and your continued support of us. We will continue to update you of any changes going forward. Everyone stay safe.

Kind regards, BC Team

EXTREME WEATHER NOTICE
Just a small reminder about our Hot Weather Policy. We will close either at 1.00 or 3.00 pm on days where the ambient temperature is deemed excessive. Catching and transiting livestock in such conditions is detrimental to their continued well-being. Thank you for your understanding and please call ahead to avoid disappointment.

Also a reminder to keep your birds cool in these conditions, especially for those kept in outdoor aviaries. Provide additional water sources (preferably cold water from the fridge or iced water) and cold leafy greens to sustain them during the worst heat of the day. And of course, you keep cool too.....😎

A Mid-Spring hello to all and sundry,

Yes - isn't spring grand! The days are warmer and longer, the garden is blooming and the birds are all out and about. My favourite time of year - the baby parrot season - which is almost upon us.

I saw a story on ABC Gardening Australia last night about our back yard birds and National Bird Week (starting 21 October 2019). For those that are interested in participating in the Bird Life National Bird Count, I have attached a link below to the official website (hope it works!). There is an App available that can be downloaded.

Even if you don't take part, I encourage you to take time to listen and observe the bird life in your yard. Birds are an important part of our ecology - and we need them just as much as they need us (by making our gardens more bird-friendly). A great day to all....

Kind regards, BC Team

In line with our extreme heat policy, we will be closed by 3.00 pm today and 1.00 pm tomorrow. NO BIRDS will be sold after 10.00 am tomorrow, so as to ensure their continued well-being after leaving our premises. STAY COOL EVERYONE!

27/12/2018

I forgot to add a reminder about our trading hours during extreme heat levels in my last post. If it exceeds 30 degrees, we shut down early either at 1.00 pm or 3.00 pm (it is usually 3.00 pm).

We have for many years adopted this policy to protect the birds - heavy customer flows can add to the stress that birds experience in such conditions. Gives them a chance to recuperate and rest for the next day!

Stay cool everyone.
