The Bluey & Alice Bunny Refuge Cockatoo, Victoria

The Bluey & Alice Bunny Refuge Cockatoo, Victoria We rehome unwanted bunnies after having them desexed, vaccinated, vet checked. We take in abandoned, neglected, or otherwise unwanted bunnies.
(1)

While at the refuge, our buns learn to trust humans again & eventually find their forever home. Often, rabbits are used purely for money making ventures & are not cared for properly. Many buns become unwanted pets because of their natural tendencies to spray, nip, & thump when they are scared. We at the rescue make every effort to rehabilitate the bunnies that stay with us through countless opport

unities for cuddles and routine care. Our intention is to have these buns desexed, vaccinated, and accustomed to being handled. We have other family pets on the property so the buns adapt to being around those various sights, sounds, & smells. Once they are ready for adoption, we seek out loving owners for these rehabilitated buns to choose. Our Adoption fee starts at $195 per bunny, which goes towards the cost of desexing & vaccination. Multiple buns reduce in cost. All of our bunnies are fully vaccinated & vet checked. If you have any questions, message us or call in.

Hello everyone,

I have a huge appology to make to everyone regarding our website.
I am not in anyway computer savvy and have had a new site set up but not completed.
I now have someone who is helping me and I have discovered that all emails that have been sent via the “contact us” page have been going no where!

Also the booking page was not working.

Both issues are in the process of being resolved and I now have a team taking over the back end so this won’t happen again. If/when it does, it will be resolved quickly.

I’m so incredibly sorry to anyone who tried to contact me this way!
I will be answering each one as I get to them so please be patient.
Once again I can’t apologise enough.

Snowy

Meet Snowy, the 7-year-old bun, an inquisitive and sweet senior rabbit looking for a loving new family to call her own. Snowy is the perfect companion for anyone who appreciates a pet with a gentle heart and an inquisitive nature. Her endearing personality shines through in everything she does, making her an exceptional addition to any home.

Despite her senior status, Snowy loves to explore her surroundings. She is always eager to check out what you're up to, whether you're working at your desk, lounging on the couch, or rustling around in the kitchen. Her curiosity knows no bounds, and she will happily follow you around the house, keeping you company and showering you with affection.

Snowy's favourite pastime, apart from exploring, is cuddling. She's extremely sweet and loves nothing more than to snuggle up with her humans. Her gentle, soothing presence is like a warm blanket on a chilly day, bringing comfort and joy to everyone she meets. Whether you're looking for a buddy to share your quiet evenings or a delightful friend to brighten up your days, Snowy fits the bill.

This senior bun still has a lot of love and companionship to offer and would thrive in a home where she can spend her golden years surrounded by love and care. If you're ready to welcome a curious, cuddly, and utterly charming rabbit into your life, Snowy is waiting to meet you!

Please note that Snowy will most likely need to be adopted with or bonded to a companion.

To meet Snowy, please book a non-obligated "Adoption" appointment where all your questions will be answered and meet the lovely Snowy

If every one of you donated just $5 that would give us $22,500.
Without help we really are looking at folding.

Bunnies need your help urgently.
Bluey and Alice bunny refuge has helped over a thousand rabbits in the 10 years it has operated in Cockatoo Vic. We are currently in urgent need of donations.
We have no funds to pay existing vet bills after some very sick buns, let alone any new ones needing surgery.
That also means we won’t be able to afford vaccinations, medications, speys and neuters.
As a volunteer I see first hand every week how much it takes to keep this refuge going. It's so much more than meets the eye.
The refuge relies 100 % on volunteers and donations to continue to take in and rehome abandoned, rabbits like these babies who lost their mum.

No donation is too small.

Hello bun world.
Well we have had the pre Christmas holiday surrenders as we do every year.
Fu did are incredibly low and we have had some very sick buns to deal with.
Any help at all would be very much appreciated as we need to be able to keep up with feed, desexing and meds bills.

Last November marks a decade of dedication, compassion, and countless happy hops at Bluey and Alice Bunny Refuge! Over the past 10 years, we’ve:
✨ Taken in over 1,000 bunnies in need
✨ Found loving homes for almost 900 bunnies
✨ Ensured that over 70% of our bunnies were desexed through the rescue

These milestones are a testament to the incredible support from our community, adopters, volunteers, and fosters.

We’re thrilled to announce an Open Day in April this year to honour this achievement! This special event will celebrate our journey and unveil our brand-new adoption room.

We’re seeking sponsors to make this event truly unforgettable. If you’d like to participate, please email us at [email protected]. Stay tuned for more details—we can’t wait to celebrate with you!

Thank you for 10 amazing years of support and love. Here's to the next 10!

Hello everyone. Unfortunately, this is not a nice story, but it is important and needs to be shared.
Recently at the refuge we received 5 baby buns that were just shy of 2 weeks old and were told mum had died. This is the second case within a couple months, everyone was excited to watch these babies grow up like the litter before them.
One of them sadly passed on soon after being brought to the refuge and 4 were left. Carolyn was traveling to Sydney and unable to take the babies with her, so I volunteered to take them. They stayed with me for a week. During the week they stayed with me they got so much love and attention, being adored by my family and the clients my mum had in as she works from home. Sadly though 2 of them passed in my care. One of them went unexpectedly when I was out running errands, and one was going downhill for a few days and passed in my arms.
When I took them back to the refuge I told the vet, Gloria, that one of the 2 babies left wasn’t doing well and had the same symptoms as the brown baby that passed (swollen ge****ls). Turns out they had myxomatosis and the 2 of them had to be euthanised immediately. They were sedated and passed away in my hands.
They had likely gotten myxo from mum, which looked like she had symptoms in the pictures that were sent once we zoomed right in.
Those babies were robbed at their chance of life from the get-go and were set up for failure.
It breaks my heart to no end and is incredibly frustrating and disappointing. It is very lucky that I have no buns at home, and they weren’t left at the refuge. If I did have my own bun, they would have to be euthanised and if left at the refuge all the buns there would be at risk and potentially the whole refuge would have to be euthanised.
Myxomatosis is a horrible disease, I’ve put down a couple wild bunnies because of how far gone they were with it. It is one of the most cruel and painful ways for a rabbit to go and can be prevented if the right measures are taken.
The two babies that were the strongest were just starting to live and learning how to be little bunnies. One didn’t even have symptoms and was as energetic as anything. The other two had to suffer until they couldn’t fight any longer.
Please take measures to prevent myxomatosis and prevent buns from having to suffer horrible deaths before they even get a chance at life.
Buns MUST live indoors especially during the warmer months when mozzies are around.
There is no cure, it’s a death sentence.
Please, please, please look after your bunnies!

Keeping Rabbits Cool in Summer: Essential Tips for Bunny Care

Summer is here, and while we may enjoy the sunshine, our furry friends need extra care to stay comfortable in the heat. Rabbits are sensitive to high temperatures and can easily overheat, so it's important to take steps to keep them safe and cool.

Here are some tips to help your bunnies beat the heat:

1. Provide Shade and Ventilation
Ensure your rabbits’ space is shaded and well-ventilated. If they live outdoors, move their hutch to a shady area and cover it with a reflective material like a silver tarp. Indoors, keep them in a cool, well-aired room away from direct sunlight.

2. Use Frozen Water Bottles
Freeze water bottles and place them in your rabbit’s enclosure. Your bunny can snuggle up to the cool surface when they need relief. Wrap the bottles in a cloth to avoid direct contact with their skin.

3. Offer Cool, Fresh Water
Always provide plenty of fresh, cool water. Adding ice cubes to their water bowl can help keep it chilled throughout the day.

4. Cool Surfaces to Relax On
Provide tiles or slabs of marble for your rabbits to lie on. These materials stay cooler than other surfaces and can offer instant relief.

5. Groom Your Bunny
Excess fur can trap heat, especially in long-haired rabbits. Regular grooming to remove loose fur will help them stay cooler.

6. Adjust Feeding Times
Rabbits may eat less during hot weather. Offer fresh vegetables like lettuce or cucumber (in moderation) to help with hydration, but always stick to their usual balanced diet.

7. Avoid Heat-Producing Items
Remove heat-retaining materials like fleece bedding during summer. Opt for breathable mats or bare floors.

8. Monitor for Signs of Heatstroke
Watch for symptoms like lethargy, panting, or red ears. If you suspect your rabbit is overheating, dampen their ears with a cool cloth and contact your vet immediately.

Keeping your rabbits cool is vital for their health and happiness. A little preparation can go a long way in ensuring they stay comfortable all summer long.

Let us know your favorite bunny cooling tips in the comments! Stay cool, everyone!

Thank You for an Incredible 2024! 🐰💙

As we wrap up another year, we want to take a moment to thank each and every one of you for your unwavering support of Bluey and Alice Bunny Refuge.

This year, we celebrated our 10th anniversary, rescued countless bunnies, found loving homes for many, and took big steps toward making 2025 even better with our new adoption room on the way.

None of this would be possible without our amazing volunteers, foster families, adopters, donors, and supporters. You’re the reason we can keep hopping forward!

Here’s to another year of love, hope, and happy tails.

These babies are dead now, thanks to myxo and not having the vaccine available. Although I doubt that would have saved them as mum contracted it and they were born with it!

VACCINATE YOUR BUNS AND KEEP THEM INSIDE AWAY FTOM MOZZIES

Meet Brie & Cheddar, the two survivors of our last orphaned litter.
They look terribly bedraggled but mum isn’t here to keep them looking their best. They try, but we all know how well a toddler does their hair!

We have no idea what the other 3 crossed the rainbow bridge but we are doing everything in our power to keep these two going strong.

A massive thankyou to volunteer Hannah for taking them home to feed and nurture. I know she will hate to see them go, but go they must. Back to the rescue to get ready for a new family.

🐇 Looking for Summer Fosters! 🐇

As the holidays approach, we’re looking for compassionate foster homes for our bunnies over the summer break. Fostering provides a cozy environment and extra love for the buns while freeing up space at the refuge to help even more rabbits in need.

🐰 Important Information:

Foster bunnies must be kept indoors at all times.
If you have your own rabbits, foster buns must be kept completely separate to ensure safety and wellbeing for all.
If you’re local and have room in your heart (and home) to welcome a bunny guest this summer, we’d love to hear from you!

📧 Email us at: [email protected] to learn more about fostering.

Thank you for giving our buns the gift of love and care this season. 🐰💖

Please tell them breeding is not OK!
If they didn’t keep breeding they wouldn’t need to cull the poor deformed buns.
One comment e em states that they didn’t realise rabbits started as a food breed.
For gods sake they didn’t!
No animal “started” as hfood!

Although I show cute bunnies, this is not directed for pet market people. I know where food comes from and I’m happy to raise my own. It’s hard culling but it’s part of it. I’ve lost several followers this month, but gained a whole lot more. At my farm I know meat doesn’t just magically appear at ALDIs and I know how animals are raised in big corporations. I would 100 percent rather know how my animals are cared for and process myself. I do still buy meat also, but the more I can do for myself the better. Let’s please change the stigma that surrounds this topic. Education is a must 🖤

Today we had another call about orphans whose mum had passed away, likely from Calici, as she wasn't vaxed & was otherwise well.

This makes 9 babies to vaccinate, desex, microchip and feed until they are old enough to be adopted.

Any donations gratefully received as we will really struggle with funds.
They will never go without as my whole team pours their heart and soul into helping, but please help us help these bubbas.

So, you've got yourself a pair (or more) of bonded rabbits. Congratulations!

You're now part of a very exclusive (and slightly crazy) club.

The rules are simple:

*Keep them together.
If you separate, for even a short period, you may need to rebond which can be tricky.
No exceptions, not even for vet visits.
Always keep them together even if one needs to stay in, they are so much more secure with their bonded friend than alone.
Should the worst happen, the lone partner can say goodbye and understand what has just happened.
If the clinic says no, insist!
It’s all about the buns!!

*Food… don't get me started on food - scatter feeding is the only way to go with newly bonded buns & includes those newly adopted, until they settle in and sort their pecking order in their new home.
Yes, they'll still fight occasionally. But that's just part of the fun, right?
It's all worth it in the end, when you see your bunnies snuggled up together, living their best lives.

Buns in pairs and groups are fun. Hard work but oh so worth the effort!

If you are lucky enough to have adopted from us you will know of our support network so you will face that to help you through troubled times too.
