Due to a scheduling error by yours truly, tomorrow I’m doing my first 10 horse day in a very, very long time.

I hurt my back quite badly a few years ago and stopped trimming full time. I’ve been getting into gear again since mid last year but I don’t quite feel ready 😳

For a full time trimmer, a 10 horse day is normal but in this hot weather when it hasn’t rained since who knows when, it’s really very unpleasant for anyone. I’m terrified 😂😂😂

Anyway I thought I better round up all my knives and sharpen them. Can you tell which type is my favorite?!

It’s the only knife that can trim BARS on hard feet. Over and over I get new clients who have never seen their HCP use one of them- which means the bars aren’t getting trimmed. It sucks, it’s hard, and it’s necessary. Trim the bars peeps!!!

Good trimming technique and diet is so important!!

Both photos are pre-trim, around 6 months apart.

When a hoof is crooked and gets laminitic, any crookedness is exacerbated three fold. This can happen really quickly.

This little pony had severe hoof wall separation in the lateral side which had been repeatedly cut out (resected) further adding to the distortion and imbalance.

Apparently her hoof had looked like this for about 2 years even though trimming was regular 😳

Once the laminitis is under control and the trim balances the hoof side to side, separation (and cracks) will grow out and the wonkyness will also disappear.

No resections were done to grow out the separation- it is not necessary. I know I’ll get shot for saying that but it’s true and I’ve done it time and time again, however the cause- laminitis- has to be removed in order for it to be successful.

If it’s not getting better, seek a second opinion!!!

Hooves like this damage the joints and upper body, the body is a unit where everything works together.

Why do hooves improve so much faster on a weekly trim cycle❓

👉 This happens because when the hoof is kept in its anatomically correct shape, the internal structures are able to do their job and promote healing from inside out.

👉 With a long trim cycle (anything more than 4 weeks) the hoof grows too long and this affects the internal structures and functions of the hoof.

👉 By keeping the hoof in its anatomically correct shape and size at all times, the circulation is optimised and the hoof will be able to land heel first and function correctly.

Peripheral loading happens in barefoot horses too if they are on a long trim cycle- this was a barefoot trim that simply got left too long.

It’s one of the reasons a 4 weekly professional trim is important! Even better to do a small file weekly.

The horse’s hooves should never “look like they need a trim”. If they do, the boat sailed weeks ago, and were not getting ahead of or improving problems. Simply treading water or allowing pathology to creep in.

Milo the STB fully kitted out by us- 💙 Saddle is a Hidalgo Cordoba with custom tooling option 🩵 E.A. Mattes anatomical sheepskin girth in royal blue 💙 Grandeur shimmable saddle pad in royal blue, with 10mm felt inserts inside. These pads are AMAZING! 🩵 Flex hoof boots with blue gaiters and straps Milo has some body issues and his very dedicated owner has spent a lot of time peeling back the layers, including learning how to trim his hooves weekly. One of his hind legs twists which makes boot fitting difficult but by doing a small weekly trim to maintain balance, and a heat fitted hoof boot we got a perfect result with snug boots that don’t twist. The last thing before riding comfortably was Milo’s treed saddle! It was hurting him. As well as having his back treated (always do this first as it will NOT go away with rest or change of saddle alone!!) he got a Hidalgo saddle. When I saw him last, his back had no soreness anymore. 👏🏻 👏🏻 This makes me so happy! When we attend to all the pieces of the puzzle, we get to see it come together in the best interest of the horse. New Mattes! Some customer orders and some for the shop. Girths as well. Mattes girths and pads are such high quality, and you can get the pads with or without sheepskin in different shapes. My favorite is the one where the fleece is under the saddle panels, and in a strip down the shoulder. It not only looks amazing, it also covers under the bottom edge of the saddle panel at the front. So comfy ❤️ The velvet for the top material does not fade, feels luxe as, and doesn’t get any hair stuck to it. The design possibilities are endless. Can’t do wrong with these! Merlin is getting used to the saddle feels. He’s a champion 🩵 💙 He’s a weird shape right now 🧐 He hasn’t finished growing and he’s butt high. Will need tinkering with. And a different shaped girth (which I already knew and it’s on its way). He’s borrowing the Hidalgo Venice saddle I’ve been using on Cedric here. You can do that with these saddles since they are flexible. Anyway he’s stuck with blue because I have a pile of these boots in size 145 so, blue it is. Why don’t you get some for your horse so I don’t need to take them all??!! 😂 blue is not my thing!!! We have a mattes order incoming this week and there’s some blue pads in it up for grabs. And number 3. Always trotting up for his early morning session. Or any session really. Doesn’t even need to be a session! He just comes like a dog with a perfect recall 😂 He was a bit offended this week because we did not have food on board. School kid number 2. These kids are great! Merlin heading back home and hanging out with us afterwards, not running back to the others straight away. He can be a bit of a micromanager with the herd now that he’s a real boy. They all live together. We’re doing something a bit different for all of us and I’m rating it!! Merlin is the purebred son of Valiant the jousting stallion at Kryal Castle. We’re so lucky to have him. He hasn’t done breeding yet, I want his training SUPER solid so we can manage him in the best way possible.
