Check out our hot tips to help you keep your pets safe this summer ☀️

💧 Provide Plenty of Fresh Water

Dehydration can happen quickly in the heat, so keeping their water bowls filled is essential.

Consider adding ice cubes to the water to keep it cool longer.

🌳 Create Cool Spaces

Keep your pet in air-conditioned or well-ventilated areas during the hottest parts of the day.

If your pet is outside, ensure there's a shaded area where they can escape the sun.

🧢 Protect Their Eyes and Skin

If your pet is outside in direct sunlight, consider pet-safe sunscreen (for hairless or light-coloured pets) and protect their eyes with doggy sunglasses or a hat designed for pets.

☀️ Limit Exercise in the Heat

Avoid intense outdoor play and exercise during peak heat hours. Opt for shorter, cooler walks and slow-paced play in the early morning or late evening.

Always stop to give your pet water during walks and rest frequently.

🔥 Avoid Hot Pavement

Hot pavement can burn your pet’s paws, especially in the summer heat. Always test the pavement with your hand—if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your pet’s paws.

🧊 Create DIY Cooling Solutions

Frozen Treats: Make homemade ice cubes or frozen treats with pet-safe ingredients like peanut butter, chicken broth, or yoghurt.

DIY Cooling Towels: Soak a towel in cold water and drape it over your pet. This can help reduce body heat, especially for pets with shorter coats.

🧸 Consider Indoor Play

Keep your pet entertained with toys and games indoors during the hottest hours of the day. Mental stimulation can be just as tiring as physical exercise.

🥵 Check for Signs of Overheating

Watch for signs of heatstroke, which can include heavy panting, excessive drooling, lethargy, vomiting, or uncoordinated movement. If you notice these signs, move your pet to a cooler environment immediately and contact a veterinarian.

The warmer months are officially here, and just like us, our pets can also suffer from allergies.

Signs your pet may have allergies:

Dogs
🐶Chewing and licking feet/belly
🐶Itching or scratching
🐶Rashes
🐶Ear/skin infections
🐶Gunky or red eyes

Cats
🐱Itching around the head and ears
🐱Hair loss or scabbing/scratches
🐱Overgrooming or licking off hair, especially under the belly or on the legs.
🐱Ear infections. Sneezing and/or coughing.

There are many reasons for your cat or dog to get allergies. Some common ones are grass, plants, pollen, dust, food, and fleas

🙋‍♀️What can you do?

Vets can not always identify what causes an allergy to occur. But a veterinary consultation will allow us to inform you of the options available for your pet.

Our vets can recommend the best treatment choice for your pet, this could be an injection, anti-allergy tablets, topical creams, medicated washes, or a change to their diet

Meet Dr. Monica!

🎵 Ohhh Canada 🎶 That’s right, our friendly, bubbly Monica is from the maple syrup loving country Canada, eh.

Monica began her studies in Toronto before moving to our beautiful city, where she completed her studies at Melbourne University, earning a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine.

This vibrant individual graced our presence in 2023, and we never want her to leave. She keeps herself busy with basketball, tennis, and swimming whilst also discovering Victoria through hiking and camping.

Gentle eyes that see so much,
Paws that have a quiet touch.
Purrs to signal all is well,
and show more love than words can tell.
Graceful movements touched with pride,
A calming presence by our side.
A friendship that will last and grow -
Small wonder why we love them so.

This kookaburra was brought to Progressive Vet Care by a member of our community after being found injured, likely due to a vehicle collision.

Although this little lady was initially stunned and unable to fly, aside from a few abrasions on her head, there were no serious injuries detected. We provided her with a safe, warm place to recover, and once she was feeling a bit better, she managed to take an unexpected flight around the clinic before being safely captured. Oops! 🙊

After sedation and X-rays revealed no internal damage, a carer from Wildlife Victoria collected her so she could begin her rehabilitation journey. Working with such a magnificent native bird was a pleasure, and we wish her all the best in her recovery and release.

Can you spot the foreign body?

Cats and dogs can be attracted to fish hooks because of their smell. Because of this, they can get stuck on their faces, limbs, paws or cause serious internal damage if swallowed.

Always make sure not to leave your fishing rods unattended, and if you think your pet may have swallowed a fish hook give us a call immediately.

Thankfully, the hook was safely removed and the dog is recovering well.
