To all our Feline Friends, please read:
🚨IMPORTANT MESSAGE🚨

Australia is currently facing a widespread shortage of cat F3 vaccinations due to production challenges that emerged in the aftermath of the pandemic. In response to this situation, our primary objective is to manage the available supply judiciously while minimizing the risk of fatal diseases within the cat population.

To achieve this, we will be implementing a vaccination prioritization strategy to try and ensure that the cats most susceptible to contracting diseases receive the necessary protection. These high-priority groups include:
* Kittens,
* Cats receiving their initial adult vaccinations, and
* Cats headed for cattery stays.

VERY IMPORTANT:
For cats at lower risk, mainly adults who have been previously vaccinated, in particular indoor adult cats, that are due for their routine annual booster, we recommend postponing their booster shots until early 2024 once the vaccination shortage has been resolved.

However, it’s important to note that we can still conduct annual health check-ups for these cats to monitor their well-being.
An annual checkup is recommended so you can touch base with your vet to discuss any concerns and cover common topics such as aging health, general health, diet, dental care, behavior, mobility, coat etc.

We will keep you posted with any developments. Once the vaccination supplies are replenished, we will let you know.

We understand that this situation may cause inconvenience, and we appreciate your understanding and cooperation during these challenging times. If you have any questions or require additional information, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Your cat’s health and safety remain our top priorities, and we are committed to providing the best care possible under the circumstances.

Have a great weekend ☀️🐈🐈‍⬛☀️
The First Paw Team

There are several benefits of home vet visits for senior pets, including:

1. Reduced stress: Senior pets may find it stressful to travel to a veterinary clinic, especially if they have mobility issues or suffer from anxiety. Home vet visits can help reduce this stress by allowing the pet to remain in a familiar environment.

2. Convenience: Home vet visits are convenient for pet owners who may have difficulty transporting their senior pets to a clinic. This is especially true for those who do not have access to a car or who have mobility issues themselves.

3. Personalized care: Home vet visits allow for more personalized care as the veterinarian can observe the pet in its natural environment and tailor their recommendations accordingly.

4. Early detection of health issues: Regular home vet visits can help detect health issues early on, particularly via blood/urine screening, which can lead to better treatment outcomes and a higher quality of life for the pet.

5. Improved communication: Home vet visits allow for improved communication between the veterinarian and pet owner, as they can discuss any concerns or questions in a relaxed and comfortable setting.

Does your dog suffer from arthritis? 🐕 If so keep reading as we have a new monthly injectable treatment called Beransa now available for dogs!
SWIPE LEFT ⬅️

It is a monoclonal antibody therapy which means it works with your dogs own immune system to block one of the pain signals released by damaged cartilage. This results in less pain from osteoarthritis for your dog. 🐩

Unlike other drugs which help relieve pain from osteoarthritis, Beransa has minimal side effects which means it’s relatively safe to use in dogs with kidney or liver issues. 😃

It is given once per month via an injection 💉 and can work synergistically with other osteoarthritis treatments such as cartrophen injections which help to improve the overall health of the joint and cartilage. 🦴

For your convenience First Paw comes directly to your home to administer these injections saving you the trouble of taking your arthritic dog to the vet. 🩺🚗

We have seen great results with the equivalent cat product Solensia 🐱 which we have been using for some time now, so we are very excited to start using Beransa for dogs!

Get in touch if you would like to know more or book an appointment. 🐶

Jess & Oscar👌

Now let’s talk .
This sedative/calming medication has become quite popular as a safe means to manage your cat’s anxiety.

It was dispensed for Oscar due to his looming transport to the cattery followed by a move to Sydney 😳

Leaving home stresses Oscar. At home on the other paw, he seems pretty chill 🤙 👍

Gabapentin is a medication that is commonly used to treat anxiety in cats, especially during veterinary visits and transportation. This medication works by affecting the release of certain neurotransmitters in the brain that are responsible for pain, anxiety and seizures.

The use of gabapentin in anxious cats has been proven to be very effective and is considered to be a safe and well-tolerated medication. For example, when given before a veterinary visit, it can help to reduce the cat's anxiety and make the experience less stressful for both the cat and the owner. Similarly, when used for transportation, it can help to calm an anxious cat and make the trip more manageable.

It is important to note that gabapentin should only be used under the guidance of a veterinarian, as the dosage and administration will vary depending on the individual cat and their specific needs. Additionally, it is important to monitor the cat's response to the medication and to be aware of any potential side effects.

In conclusion, gabapentin is a useful tool for treating anxiety in cats, especially during veterinary visits and transportation. With proper use, it can help to reduce stress and improve the overall well-being of anxious cats. If you have concerns about your cat's anxiety, be sure to talk to your veterinarian to determine the best course of treatment.

At First Paw we are big fans of Gabapentin! Easy online booking (link in bio) if interested. 🐾⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

The distinguished Scruffy (and support side kick Bubbles) not getting off the couch for his regular injection 👍

Sruff’s not the biggest fan of the vet clinic scene so why bother 😉
🤙🐾

In fact Scruff was so impressed about having to go no where for his allergy treatment, he asked if I could spread the love 🙂
So let’s do it..

Cytopoint is an injectable medication for dogs that is used to treat atopic dermatitis, which is a form of allergic skin disease. It works by targeting a specific protein in the dog's immune system that contributes to allergic reactions.

Clinical signs that may indicate a dog is suffering from atopic dermatitis and could benefit from treatment with Cytopoint include itching, redness, and hair loss on the ears, paws, and belly. Other signs may include recurrent skin infections, and excessive licking, biting, or scratching of the affected areas.

The benefits of treatment with Cytopoint include:

• Long-term relief of itching and inflammation associated with atopic dermatitis
• Improving the quality of life for both the dog and the owner
• Decrease the need for other forms of treatment such as oral steroids or antibiotics

The advantages of receiving treatment at home by a mobile vet include:

• Convenience - the treatment can be given in the comfort of your own home.
• Avoiding the stress of travel for the dog and the owner.
• Flexibility in scheduling the appointment
• Being in a familiar environment for the dog, reducing the stress of being in an unfamiliar and clinical environment.

Here Melbourne we offer a handy home Cytopoint service with discounted subsequent call out fees.

Ahoyhoy my name is Rosie the and I have a few words of warning and wisdom about Heat stroke in dogs.
We all don’t get to chill by a lake 🙌,
so listen up!!

Heat stroke in dogs occurs when a dog's body temperature rises to dangerous levels due to exposure to high temperatures and a lack of proper ventilation.

Certain breeds, such as Bulldogs, Pugs, and Boxers, may be more prone to heat stroke due to their short snouts and difficulty breathing.

Symptoms of heat stroke in dogs include heavy panting, rapid heartbeat, drooling, vomiting, and diarrhea. If you suspect your dog is suffering from heat stroke, it is important to seek immediate veterinary care.

In the meantime, some home remedies you can use to cool your dog down include:
• Providing water to drink and misting their body with cool water
• Placing a cool, damp towel on their head and chest
• Placing a fan in front of an open window to create a breeze
• Applying ice packs or cold compresses to the dog's head, neck, and chest

It's important to note that these remedies are not a substitute for veterinary care, and if your dog's symptoms do not improve or worsen, you should seek veterinary attention immediately.

Additionally, it is important to prevent heat stroke by providing plenty of fresh water, a cool place to rest, and limiting exposure to hot temperatures.

The Weimaraner is a large, elegant dog breed that was originally bred in Germany for hunting big game. They are known for their distinctive silver-gray coat and athletic build.

As a pet, Weimaraners require regular exercise and mental stimulation to keep them happy and healthy. They can be prone to certain health issues such as hip dysplasia and bloat, so it is important to keep them at a healthy weight and to bring them to the vet for regular checkups. Additionally, they may require regular grooming to maintain their coat.

Overall, Weimaraners make great companions for active families and individuals who have the time and energy to devote to their care.
