It's National Check the Chip Day! 🐶🐱

Microchips greatly increase the chances that pets will be reunited with their families if they are lost or stolen…but a microchip only works if its registration information is accurate.

🐾 Make an appointment with our vets for microchipping if your pet isn’t already microchipped (we will make sure that your pet’s chip is immediately registered).

🐾 Check your already-microchipped pet’s registration information in the microchip manufacturer’s database, and make sure it’s up-to-date. To find out which database your pet's chip is registered, visit www.petaddress.com.au

Why does my pet's breath smell? 🤢

Just like humans, pets should have clean and odourless breath when their oral health is in good condition. A healthy mouth consists of clean teeth, pink gums and minimal plaque or tartar buildup.

1️⃣ Plaque and tartar buildup. Over time, bacteria in the mouth combine with food particles, saliva and dead cells, forming a sticky film called plaque. If not removed, plaque hardens into tartar, which can lead to bad breath. The buildup of plaque and tartar provides a breeding ground for bacteria, resulting in foul odours.

2️⃣ Gum disease (gingivitis). When plaque and tartar accumulate along the gumline, it irritates the gums, leading to inflammation and gingivitis. Inflamed gums can be red, swollen, and prone to bleeding. The bacteria present in gingivitis can produce unpleasant odours, causing persistent bad breath.

3️⃣ Tooth decay or infection. 🦷 Cavities or infected teeth can emit foul odours as bacteria thrive within the decayed or infected areas. This can contribute to persistent bad breath that cannot be resolved without professional dental care.

4️⃣ Other underlying health issues. In some cases, bad breath may be an indication of an underlying health problem beyond dental issues. Conditions such as kidney disease, diabetes, respiratory infections, gastrointestinal disorders, or even certain cancers can manifest as foul breath. It's crucial to consult with our vets to determine the root cause of persistent bad breath.

If you suspect that your pet may be having trouble with their teeth we urge you to book a consult with our vets as soon as possible. ☎️

Have you ever wondered what happens when your pet visits us for a dental scale and polish? 🦷🤔

🩺 After your pet has been anaesthetised a thorough examination of their mouth will begin.

👩‍⚕‍ Our vets assisted by a veterinary nurse will then examine and note any abnormalities in their medical record. Xrays may be taken to see below the gumline.

🍗 A dental probe will be used to evaluate gum bleeding and periodontal pockets where food can accumulate.

🦷 Following an examination of the teeth, scaling will begin. This is done using both hand and ultrasonic scalers to remove plaque and tartar above and below the gum line.

🦠 The tartar below the gum line causes the most significant periodontal disease, so it is important that it be thoroughly removed.

🧼 After scaling, the teeth are then polished to remove microscopic scratches and decrease the rate of subsequent plaque build-up.

If you would like more information on a dental procedure or would like to book your pet in please call and speak to our friendly nurses. 📞❤️

🌟 FAQ 🌟

Q: Why hasn't the vet called me with my pet's lab results yet, and why can't the receptionist or nurse just give me the results if they are in❓

A: Receiving results from the lab is only part of the process, as our vets need to be able to sit down and take the time to interpret what they mean and then formulate a plan for your pet. 🔬
This takes time, so if your results are in and you haven't received a call yet, we promise it is on our vet's to-do list and they will get back to you as soon as possible.
You can help make the process quicker by having your phone at the ready for when they call, so you don't end up playing 'telephone tag' and making the process longer.
Receptionists and nurses, while often knowledgeable about certain conditions, are not legally allowed to interpret lab results, so they will need to defer you to the vet for this reason. 🙂

FAQ: Why does my pet need a general anaesthetic just to get their teeth cleaned?

Ever wondered why your pet needs anaesthesia for a simple teeth cleaning? 🤔 🦷🐾

1️⃣ Safety First: Anaesthesia ensures your pet is comfy and still during the procedure, preventing stress and sudden movements that could harm them.

2️⃣ Thorough Cleaning: It allows our vets to clean every nook and cranny, even beneath the gumline, where dental problems often hide.

3️⃣ Monitoring Matters: Our vet teams closely watch vital signs to keep your pet safe throughout the procedure.

4️⃣ Preventing Aspiration: Fasting before anaesthesia prevents food or liquids from entering the lungs, reducing the risk of pneumonia.

5️⃣ Gentle Recovery: Anaesthesia keeps your pet calm during the process and minimises post-op discomfort.

Now you know, anaesthesia in pet dental care is all about keeping your furbaby healthy and happy! 🐶🦴😺

Imagine going SEVEN YEARS between visits to your dentist! 😧
Our pets age more quickly than we do in one human year, so it's VITAL to have their teeth checked regularly. 🦷

Poor dental hygiene can result in a host of medical problems including gingivitis, periodontal disease, tooth loss, infection and difficulty eating.

If your pet hasn't had a dental check in 6 months or more, please give us a call to book an appointment. 📞

🌟 Working Dogs Series - Detection Dogs 🌟

Detection dogs have exceptional senses of smell and are highly motivated by positive reinforcement. A detection dog is trained to sniff out a particular substance or group of substances. 🐕‍🦺

🔵 Common types of substances to be sniffed out include illegal drugs, explosives, blood and human remains. Some detection dogs even learn to detect cancer, abnormal blood sugar levels, certain types of insects (such as bed bugs), or even animal faeces.

🔵 Detection dogs are used in law enforcement, airport security, wildlife biology and health care. One of the oldest uses of detection dogs is in hunting for truffles. 🐶

🔵 The breeds often used include:
🐾 Beagle
🐾 Labrador Retriever
🐾 Golden Retriever

BREED SPOTLIGHT: Yorkshire Terrier 🐾

The Yorkshire Terrier is among the smallest of dogs, with a small head, and a medium length muzzle. The ears are v-shaped, set high and carried erect.
Their most notable feature is their coat, which is long, fine and straight. Their hair is a steel blue colour on the body and tail, and elsewhere it is tan.

The Yorkshire terrier's small size belies its true personality, which is energetic, feisty — and domineering. Yorkies are affectionate, but they also want lots of attention; the breed is a good choice for someone who wants to dote on a dog.
They can be barkers, but it is possible to train them not to bark excessively.
Because they are so small, Yorkshire terriers do not need a lot of room to exercise, but they also enjoy walks outdoors. 🌳

Yorkshire Terriers shed little, but their coat requires regular care to keep it in good shape. If clipped, combing or brushing at least weekly is required. If the coat is kept long, many more hours of grooming are needed and some professional trimming from time to time, too.
This breed is sensitive to cold and prone to chills, so Yorkies need to be protected from bad weather. If walked outside when it is chilly, a dog coat is recommended. ❄️

The average life-span of the Yorkshire Terrier is 14-16 years.💞

FAQ: Why do some cats have colour-changing fur❓🐈

Did you know breeds such as Siamese, Birmans, Ragdolls and Burmese have colour-changing fur? It's all to do with temperature and genetics! The darker markings around the eyes, feet and tail are called ‘points’ and can come in different colours like seal, lilac and flame points, for example. These iconic colour points are the result of a genetic mutation, known as the Himalayan gene, which gives these felines temperature-sensitive fur. ❄️

When they are born, the kittens are usually pale all over because the womb has kept them at a cat’s normal body temperature. As they grow over the next few weeks and their extremities begin to cool, the gene is activated and the darker colours start to become visible. 😻

The Himalayan gene is also responsible for many of these cats having blue eyes.

Is your dog trying to tell you something? 🐶

Is your dog expressing unusual behaviours and no longer seem like their energetic self? We understand how confusing it may be to understand the reason for your dog’s change in behaviour. That’s why we’re here to help.

Changes in their behaviour, such as struggling to chase their favourite toy or lagging behind on walks are the initial signs of arthritis, a painful joint disease that unfortunately cannot be cured. However, our team are dedicated to ensuring that your dog has access to treatment that will improve their quality of life, by keeping osteoarthritis pain at bay.

Speak to one of our experienced vets or vet nurses today about your concerns, and how we can help your beloved pet jump back into action! ❤️
