There are a number of food items that backyard chickens need to avoid. Some are unlikely to make it to the coop – like (chocolate and coffee) but other foods like avocado or mouldy fruit are easy to overlook. Avian Influenza (bird flu) is in Victoria (Meredith and Terang). At this time it’s important to remain vigilant about your backyard biosecurity measures to reduce the risk of bird flu in your flock.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​**Limit contact with wild birds - use a tread on feeder and ensure drinking water cannot be accessed by wild birds.
**Be vigilant for signs of illness in your chickens, which may include lethargy, diarrhoea, sudden death, watery eyes and sinuses, decreased feed and water intake, decreased egg laying and difficulty breathing or walking
**Immediately report unwell birds to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline at 1800 675 888.
