I wonder what anaesthetic you would use for shark surgery…
Last week Dr Katherine and Dr Alex were very lucky to see the big boys (Great Whites!) in the wild with Rodney Fox Shark Expeditions- check out some photos taken by our friends on the boat (we were very underprepared and had no underwater cameras with us so I’m stealing these ones!) A little different to the types of animal we usually see around the clinic in Mildura…
Here are some fun facts about these impressive and surprisingly graceful animals:
-A group of sharks is called a “shiver”
-Sharks have black spots around their face that are called ampullae of Lorenzini; electroreceptor organs that sense changes in electromagnetic fields and temperature shifts in the ocean.
-Shark scientists from Flinders Uni have been testing out and comparing “bite resistant” wetsuits…not sure how they decide who’s gotta go in to do the testing!
Very exciting trip but we are glad to be back near water where the biggest animal lurking around is a Murray Cod.

Wanna get your little ones/ nieces/ nephews a Christmas present sorted early? Come have a look at this kids book Dr Alex has made! Rain is coming Christmas Day and the header has broken down. Dad is swearing. Mum is nowhere to be found. The only working option is an antique combine circa 1910 sitting in the shed.
Printed locally, all profits from the first 50 books sold go to Rural Aid.

Ouyen we are back tomorrow! Matilda almost had to call in sick after eating mouldy compost this morning and getting “the shakes” (tremors from mycotoxin toxicity), but after an emetic injection and a bit of Whiskas/ charcoal mix she reckons she is good to go! Meanwhile her owner keeps finding new ways to be hopeless at gardening. See you at the track 😁
