Starting the week with the handsome Teddy ❤️ Teddy’s family have been really consistent in implementing his plan which means progress! Behaviour change can take time, especially when they have a high reinforcement history for certain behaviours, so I’m really proud of how well Teddy and his family are doing 🤩

🌸 Luna 🌸

I had a lot of fun with this sweet girl today. We worked on implementing disengagement tools, confidence growth and games, as well as how to implement in the outside world.

Luna’s mum is doing an amazing job in helping her transition to her new home 🤗

I am so proud of Fred and his mum who has been so dedicated throughout Fred’s reactivity journey. Here we are playing Leslie McDevitt’s pattern game ‘Super Bowls’.

When working with reactivity, movement is so important! This game is a fantastic way to engage Fred in something positive while he is in an environment where his trigger is present. Management is always at play as we need Fred to remain under his threshold.

Bit of a back story - Fred is reactive towards dogs, unfamiliar people and anything novel. There have been many involved with helping Fred to create safe spaces for him, including his vet and groomer and constant management from his mum while training is at play.

This week we took Fred on a walk, this walk was in a space where we could have control over triggers being present and I am so pleased with how much Fred has improved! There is still a ways to go but to have Fred feel more comfortable in closer proximity to other dogs and people and to gradually increase novelty into his life.. saying how proud I am is an understatement 🤩

Poppy and her mum doing an amazing job with ‘middle’! 🤩

Why is this beneficial in a behaviour modification program?

✨ It’s a fantastic disengagement tool
✨ Helps the dog to engage in with the handler in a positive way, which can also aid in positive associations if a trigger is present
✨ This can also progress to ‘middle on the move’, meaning the dog walks with you in middle position. Movement is so important when working with triggers
✨ It can even aid as a block to other dogs
✨ It is also a fun bonding game for human and dog!

Poppy and her mum did amazing in today’s session!

DOUBLE TROUBLE
The challenges of raising two puppies together.

The problem behaviours that are commonly seen in dogs that are raised together is often mistakenly called “litter mate syndrome”, but these behaviours are not specific to dogs from the same litter and can occur with any 2 dogs that are raised together.

The problems that may develop have nothing to do with sharing similar DNA or coming from the same litter, but depends on how the pups are raised and how their environment is managed.

Problem behaviour is usually a combination of relational dynamics, poor socialisation, habituation, a lack of separate experiences and no individual resilience or self-confidence building.

Many people believe it’s a great idea to get two pups at the same time. They’ll be able to keep each other company when left alone, they won’t be bored; they’ll have each other to play with; they will always have a friend; both children in the family can have one; the breeder said it’s a good idea, you just couldn’t bear to leave the other one behind….and more, but this can lead to long term problems if there is no awareness of how to prevent potential problems.

Relying on the relationship between the dogs to fill the missing pieces of responsible pet parenting is setting the stage for the development of problem behaviours.

Although sibling pairs or 2 pups together may come with unique challenges, pups raised together can absolutely form healthy human bonds and develop into well-adjusted, confident dogs as long as their care givers are aware of what could go wrong and are prepared to put in the work to raise them.

🌼 Poppy 🌼

I met this beautiful girl and her amazing mum today as we work through a change in behaviour for Poppy. As with any change of behaviour, a vet check is necessary to rule out any pain or underlying medical issues.

Todays session involved implementing disengagement skills, confidence growth and loose lead skills 🐾

Looking forward to seeing this sweet girls progress ✨

✨ Confidence ✨

Is this important for our dogs? It sure is!
Confidence is a foundation for many things and is something I always want to help grow in a puppy from the very start!

I bring confidence building games and activities into majority of my behaviour consults too - it’s not just important for puppies, but for all ages!

Creating body awareness in our puppies/dogs goes hand in hand with confidence growth also.

Whether it be setting a puppy up for success, a dog with reactivity, vet visits, calm walks, you name it, confidence helps make a difference with behaviour change 🐕

I created a package just for this. This is because so many behaviour consults I go to, I see how confidence growth can positively impact behaviour change. Just like humans, dogs greatly benefit from confidence growth too 💪🏻
