⚠️ !! TICK PARALYSIS !! ⚠️
After a horrific start to tick season we thought it was time to give everyone a bit of a reminder about paralysis ticks ⚠️
Tick paralysis is a very dangerous and life threatening medical emergency that requires immediate veterinary attention.
Tick paralysis occurs when a paralysis tick (Ixodes holocyclus) attaches to a dog or cat and injects the neurotoxin from its saliva into your pets bloodstream.
Symptoms of tick paralysis:
⚠️ Wobbly hind legs
⚠️ Difficulty breathing or laboured breathing.
⚠️ Unusual sounding bark
⚠️ Coughing
⚠️ Vomiting
⚠️ Heavy Salivation
⚠️ Collapse
If not treated these signs will progress to heart and respiratory failure.
Symptoms normally start within 3 - 5 days after tick attachment and progress rapidly in the next 24 - 48 hours. Even if the tick is removed, the neurotoxin has still been injected and your pet needs immediate medical attention.
Recognising paralysis ticks: Ixodes ticks are normally green/grey and start out very small. As it engorges it becomes much bigger like the one seen in the photo above.
Seasonality: Ticks are most active in late spring and early summer, but that doesn’t mean we should become lax about tick prevention in autumn and winter!
The best way to prevent tick paralysis occurring is to keep your pet up to date with tick prevention!!
