⚠️TRIGGER WARNING : SURGICAL VIDEO ⚠️

We had poor Rocky in with us a few months ago after he couldn’t resist eating a yummy chux cloth after it was used to clean the BBQ 😢 Unfortunately, it got lodged with half of it in his stomach and half going into his intestines. There was no hope of it passing through and he became quite sick because of it 😢. Luckily his owners recognised he wasn’t himself very quickly and we were able to remove the problem before there was permanent damage to the intestines!

If you have a strong stomach have a look at the video of our vets pulling the chux from his intestines 😷.

Rocky has recovered well with his loving family and is doing so well 💕

We have such a lovely week celebrating our wonderful vet nurses for vet nurse week! 💕

Many people overlook how much our nurses do for us. Not only do they answer the phones and schedule appointments they also; monitor hospital patients, take blood, run blood tests, urinalysis’ and other lab tests, monitor anaesthetics, take x rays, triage patients and run nurse consults, just to name a few! We also can’t forget they are the biggest source of comfort to patients, giving them pats and cuddles and always having a treat on hand to make everyone a little more comfortable in the clinic 💕❤️.

We are constantly blown away by the skill, dedication and passion that all our nurses show and are so grateful that we have the team that we do 🫶.

💕 Luca from ARCH 💕

We recently had the pleasure of caring for Luca from ❤️.

This big guy came in for a vet check and it was noticed that he had a large mass in his abdomen. Dr Kate and Dr Bec then went in and were able to remove the mass 😷.

We sent the mass off for definitive diagnosis at the laboratory and it was found to be a Seminoma - a tumour formed from a retained testicle! 😢

This big guy had an unknown past, having come down to be under ARCH’s care from Queensland. He had no testicles palpable in his sc***um but without any history it was impossible to say whether he was truly desexed or just had retained testicles in his abdomen‼️.

Retained testicles, I.e. testicles that do not descend from the abdomen into the sc***um as they should, tend to form tumours over time if they are not surgically removed, just like poor Luca ‼️.

Therefore, it is recommended that all retained testicles are removed, which can be done around 6 months for most dogs, when regular desexing usually occurs. It is also recommended that dogs with retained testicles are NOT used for breeding. They generally are still fertile but retained testicles is a inhertited trait so it’s more than likely offspring will also have this problem!

Luckily for Luca, the type of tumour that he had is generally benign and don’t cause issues once they are removed 💕. Other retained testicle tumours though can be quite nasty so it is important to remove them and get a definitive diagnosis.

Luca is recovering well in his loving foster home and we look forward to seeing him again in the clinic soon 💕💕.

⚠️ 1080 baiting ⚠️

We wanted to send out a warning to the local pet owners that the 1080 baits have been renewed at the Moonee Beach foreshore area and surrounds. This sign was photographed on the weekend down at Moonee Beach.

❓What is 1080 bait? ❓
1080 bait or sodium fluoroacetate is a naturally occurring toxin that is used Australia wide for pest control. It is safe in the environment and dilutes to a harmless compound in water and is eaten by bacteria in soil. Many of Australia’s native wildlife have a natural tolerance to 1080 and therefore is considered the most environmentally responsible option currently available to protect Australia’s environment from introduced species. Generally the target for these baiting programs are wild dogs and foxes.

⁉️ What does it do? ⁉️
1080 will kill an animal is if the lethal dose is eaten. It starves the calcium and energy from the animals cells. 1080 must be digested to become toxic and in a wild dog or fox clinical signs or death occur between 30 to 80 minutes post ingestion.

⚠️ Risk to our pets ⚠️
However, this also means that this bait is extremely toxic to domestic dogs and cats as well. We urge all pet owners to be very careful when walking dogs in areas where 1080 bait has been used, which will generally always be signed as seen in the photo above.

❔Symptoms of 1080 bait ingestion: ❔
Clinical signs are usually seen within 30 minutes of ingestion and include:
⚠️ vomiting
⚠️ shaking, seizures, convulsions and/or frenzied behaviour
⚠️ sudden death

🩺 Due to the highly fatal nature of the poison and the lack of antidote, early detection and prompt veterinary intervention is essential in giving your pet the best possible chance of survival. Preventing access and being very vigilant during baiting seasons is highly advisable.

☎️ If you have questions regarding the baiting in your local area we encourage you to contact your local NPWS agent whose contact information will be on signs.

If you are concerned your pet has ingested 1080 bait please do not hesitate to contact us at the clinic on 6656 4024.

❤️❤️ Brave Peppa ❤️❤️

It’s always hard when we get a cancer diagnosis in our patients, especially when it’s one of our own ❤️.

Beautiful Peppa belongs to nurse Hannah and had been experiencing pain in her hind leg. Unfortunately we found an osteosarcoma (bone cancer) in the neck of the femur - the part of the upper leg where it inserts into the pelvis 💔.

After careful planning Dr Rob and Dr Kate went in and removed the cancer - unfortunately this meant taking the leg and part of the pelvis as well!. It was a big surgery but Peppa is such a fighter and everything went smoothly 💕.

It’s difficult to see the cancer in the first xray to the untrained eye but you can see the leg and part of the pelvis that we removed in the second image 🩻.

Peppa is now half way through her chemotherapy and running around on three legs with her brother Colby like nothing has ever happened!! ❤️

Little Maple accidentally ate some material a few months ago which ended up blocking her intestines and made her very sick 😢. Luckily we were able to identify the blockage via X-rays and our vet was able to go in and retrieve the material surgically 💕. She is pictured here having some comforting cuddles with our wonderful nurse Lani after her operation 🫶. Maple is doing very well and is home with her family living life to the full! 🐶❤️

Intestinal blockages, where something has been swallowed and is too large to pass through the intestinal system, are very dangerous and can be quite life threatening. Normally, dogs become very unwell - vomit, don’t want to eat and generally appear very sad. Our vets have had to remove quite a number of objects from the intestines of dogs - from bones, avocado seeds, corn cobs and macadamia nuts just to name a few 🤯.

Maple was very lucky that her owners brought her to the vets when they did and we are glad she made a full recovery! 💕🐶

🐈‍⬛ ARCH Cat Desexing Program Update 🐈‍⬛

We were very happy when funding became available last year for us to facilitate something we feel is very important - the desexing of companion animals to prevent unexpected and unwanted litters.

The program ran from June 2023 - June 2024 and was open to cat owners in the local region on low income. We are grateful that we were enabled to help so many people and make such a meaningful contribution to our community.

Thank you to those who helped us make it all happen: Office of Local Government, Moonee Beach Veterinary Surgery, and Midcoast Vets - Macksville, Nambucca, Urunga.

🐶 Lucy’s story 🐶

Little Lucy came in to us towards the end of her pregnancy with her first litter of chihuahua puppies! She is pictured top left with Nurse Emma just as Lucy was right about ready to pop!

Radiographs were taken so the owners knew how many puppies to expect 🩻. Can you see the puppies in the xray in the bottom left image??

Unfortunately, she ended up needing help during her labour and Dr Kate performed an emergency Caesarian section 🐶. All went well and Lucy (and puppies of course) has recovered well with her owners at home ❤️.

She returned today, a few weeks on from her ordeal, and mother and puppies are doing well! 💕💕 how cute is the little puppy in the top right image?? 😍
