Inca aces food distractors!
The final search working a blind set up after a three week course working on food distractions for a food loving labrador! One inaccessible food hide (beef burger) and one inaccessible hide (Anise). We still have some more practice to go…but a lovey snapshot into how the game is developing for this team on their first intensive course into this type of tasty distraction!
K9 Nose Work in winter gives us the amazing chance to place some hides under ice….and play a few other games skills too.
Elle’s first time free ranging for odour!
Showcasing Elle, a young field spaniel with her first time free range in the paddock and hunting for two specific training odours hidden in two of the boxes.
I don’t often share class material…but this too beautiful not to share.
This is why I love Nosework and I’m super proud of this team right now as they have climbed over some big milestones lately.
This is one of the best searches I have seen young Elle complete…and the first time in a large (safe) outside area unrestricted in her search patterns and able to move freely through the scent cones.
She can quite literally go anywhere…but recalls swiftly back into the search zone and works independently and successfully.
Her handler is restricted in mobility…so in this instance the dog returns to be fed after finding one of the hides…and the. She sets to work again to locate the final hide.
Just fabulous to watch and enjoy.
Back to Moorooduc this weekend and we had the chance to play some games….Despite the change in weather we all had a bit of fun with a tumbled down boxes…clearing the container paddock….and ground hide grids!
Each team had a maximum of 2 minutes in each search and an unknown number of hides! We had prizes for teams that found the highest numbers of hides and everyone helped make the paddocks safe from all those smelly stinkbombs!
Thanks for coming to have fun in all weathers!
We have been super busy lately with a trip across to Canberra where it was not quite all work for Mango and we ran some fun sniffs for folks to enjoy!
We had a bit of a party theme in the supper room, then a collection of containers and a final game of shiny and sharks out near all the rabbits!
The teams all had heaps of fun and success after a chance to play.
Pips FIRST ever under water hide….
Pip started her journey in K9 Nosework during November and began training on odour (Anise) mid Jan.
During the last few months Pip has been growing in confidence in searching and hunting and Emma has worked hard on reading Pips body language and has been developing a library of natural organic indications that give her information about how Pip searches.
In particular studying changes of behaviour as Pip moves through the environment and hits the edges of scent cones…then drives with more intensity towards the point of source.
I am blown away with how this little dog has taken to this game and is not phased by the challenges we set for her in training.
Have fun playing in puddles!
On the road again….travelling back from the Inaugral ACSW k9 NW Camp.
I had a blast. So much fun to be watching, note taking, auditing and listening to some great US NACSW instructors and some of our local fire, military and police detection experts….from who we can learn so much about how and what they do and how scent theory and work with dogs is applied in working roles to save lives and keep us safe.
I was blown away by the joy these guys had when working with the teams and the generosity they had for sharing with us their knowledge and understanding when it comes to problem solving with our dogs.
It was an awesome weekend….and I left the phone in the bag and went out to enjoy the days to learn….unconnected to the outside world….anything could have been happening out here!
I took some great scenery pictures and some snaps of the search areas used…updates to Crazy Canine Noseworkers Teams will be more in depth….but for now, here’s some shots of a few things explored while away for this educational break.
A little bit of gate work at lunchtime.
The dogs chose their own positions and locations when I stood at the gate. They were not told or cued to do anything throughout the session.
I just wanted to mark (click) behaviours that were appropriate for the group to offer….and in particular not rushing out as the gate swung open.
Keeping training sessions short and swift means I can fit them into a busy work day and make the most of some quality time with the dogs.
Note to myself….have the treats just a fraction smaller and be better prepared….there is a bit too long on the time delay between click/collect/driver of reinforcer for the four dogs as the treats were a fraction large!
Todays nose work games with Mango!
He is 5 months old today and is really enjoying playing K9 Nose Work games on a regular basis.
It’s great for growing puppies to learn how their bodies are changing, allows for safe physical exercise. Provides mental stimulation and problem solving challenges that tire them out!
Brilliant to play during lunchtime work breaks!
A bit of spaniel fun today.

Thank you to everyone for the continued support of Crazy Canines Services.
New clients are able to book in to K9 Nose Work Foundation Courses and are encouraged to do so before undertaking any training programs.
K9 Nose work will provide you and your dog with many ongoing benefits.
Including, but not limited to the following points:
A way to develop independence and confidence in your dog, which, in turn reduces some anxiety in their life;
A chance to gain confidence in searching and exploring their environments, which in turn helps with socialisation at all ages and body awareness as they move through the challenges set before them;
To build on problem solving skills, which aids in the cognitive development in your puppy all the way through to their senior years;
Provides your dog with mental stimulation, which will help tire them out mentally in an achievable and low stress activity.
For the human end of the partnership you will learn to appreciate your dog for the amazing skills they can perform with their sense of smell.
It provides us (the busy humans) with an easy task to set up in our everyday busy lives, and offers our dogs the opportunity to do what they love to do - sniff!
Enhances your bond and your understanding with your k9 companion will develop strongly and quickly.
Foundation Courses are set up for all dogs from the nervous to the over confident to take part safely as each dog works independently through the search areas without other dogs close by.
Suitable for all ages from 5 months upwards.
Dogs do need to be able to rest in between searches either in a crate or in their car.
Please email for further enquiries or detailed discussion if you are not sure if your dog is suited to the activity.
A bit of vehicle fun today at Crazy Canines.
Here’s one of Murphy’s searches…given the high humidity of 81% it felt a lot warmer than the 21 degrees…but thankfully it didn’t effect Murphy’s enthusiasm to find 3 hides over four vehicles.
