Owners send their horses feet to me to study.

They arrange to have them taken off and they often pay extra to the vet for this.

They wrap feet well and freeze them. They may not have a freezer but they get hold of one- a mate with a freezer and space for dead feet…

They arrange the courier. They never ask me to pay for it. I always offer. They always refuse.

They spend time with me telling me the history. The pain and the heartbreak all coming out as they speak.

The feet arrive at my place. I start my study. I phone owners numerous times during the day. They give me answers.

I share images of feet in social media asking for kindness.

Then I see a comment that the feet were not well cared for.

Great…
That really helps.
The owner sees it. Is full of guilt.
Why did she subject herself to all of this to have the finger pointed?

Folks- if you want to see real life cases and cases with history then please don’t make statements that are accusing owners of poor foot care

The ? Keratoma was removed about a month after sole removal. The photo was provided to me by the owner.

Still on my navicular journey….
This dwalf foot I’ve shared with you before. I was fascinated with the long toe and the laminar wedge but now I’m looking carefully at the navicular bone.

The angles of the bones on xray are certainly not healthy.

Why?

The bones, including the cannon bone (the top bone) are literally in a straight line. Even the fetlock is straight, there is no natural bend in the joint. Take a look at other X-rays and you will see the fetlock is at an angle. You don’t need to even look at X-rays, just look at any feet at the fetlock.

So if the bones are not in a healthy position, what does it mean for the little navicular bone.

Do you think it will be pathological based on the way the bones are in a straight line?

We are taught that the 3 bones in the bottom of the leg, the coffin bone, the short pastern and the long pastern (distal phalanx, middle phalanx and proximal phalanx more correctly named) should be aligned, so we have alignment but in this pony’s case the cannon is also in the sane straight line!

Poor little navicular.

This pony was about 3 years old, so did not have the time to cause massive destruction within the foot, but would we see signs even then in the navicular bone?
