By Tony McMahon.

Rockhampton trainer Darryl Johnston 41, had no complaints about the heat at Moranbah races last Saturday and little wonder.

In fact he nominated the Moranbah Race Club as one of his favourite venues despite having to float his horses the 420km from his home base.

“I’ve trained five winners here this year ( Moranbah’s Treasure Park racecourse), Darryl said after cooling down Saturday’s runaway $15K Cup winner Young Henry ($1.70)
That win under Rocky apprentice McKenzie Apel 23, came about just 30 minutes after the pair combined to win the $14K RQ Country Stampede Qualifier (1170m) with Grand de Lago ($4.00) To the uninitiated, Darryl’s disclosure of “training five winners at Moranbah this year” may sound nothing to write home about but definitely not so.

Saturday was the club’s third and final race meeting for 2024 and at its last in June, Johnston made a clean sweep with a winning treble. One of those winners was veteran Grand de Lago (b g 9 Dream Ahead (USA) - Just One Time x Encosta de Lago) now a Moranbah dirt track specialist with three wins there from four starts. Now the old timer with meet up with his bush counterparts in the “big smoke” at Doomben having qualified for the rich Stampede Final there later this month.

While Grand de Lago scored by 0.75 lengths from Chickerartie (Tasha Chambers, $3.80), the run of third placed Mocambo (Jamie-Lee Devine, $2.30) was colossal.
Unsuited by the sprint trip, Mocambo was “miles back” mid-race before audaciously motoring home to be beaten less than two lengths. Now trainer Rocky trainer Fred Smith has fully completed the five mandatory country runs criteria for the $200K Country Cups Final (1600m) in three weeks time at Doomben. Mocambo gained automatic entry into that race by winning the Emerald 100 (1850m) four starts back on October 10 but he had not met the stringent conditions. “Dad can take him along quietly for the Brisbane Final now. It has been a mighty effort by him and the horse,” Fred’s proud daughter and managing owner of Mocambo, Sam Conway said.

McKenzie Abel always had eventual 1550 metres Cup winner, Johnston’s part-owned Young Henry travelling comfortably in wait behind leader Here He Looms until just after the half-way point. Then McKenzie seized the moment and Young Henry challenged for the lead before consolidating and dashing away from the home straight entrance. It was a one act affair, highlighted by an 11 lengths win over old timer Delius (Devine, $8.00) which just held off Kefalonia ( Warwick Satherley, $3.60) for third.
Young Henry (ch g 5 Olympic Glory- Tale of Dreams x Take Of The Cat) is a tough cove.

Saturday’s win cane at his third start in a fortnight after a 10 lengths Gladstone win on October 26 and a second at Rockhampton three days later. That record vindicates Johnston’s training skills and the horse’s adaptation to the much warmer climate in CQ opposed to his earlier base with Scone NSW trainer Luke Pepper. Wheelchair bound Darryl Johnston, rode numerous winners as an apprentice before becoming a paraplegic resulting from a race fall in 2007 in Rockhampton. He has now trained 106 winners while McKenzie Apel, Lo after winning doubles at Rocky last Friday and Moranbah on Saturday has ridden 49 winners in just 16 months of race riding.

On Saturday morning at Moranbah, Bowen apprentice Gabrielle Semmens won races on John Manzelmann’s Grey Power ($2.60 ) and Raymond Williams’ Mississippi Morn( $2.00). Both winners are sons of Oaklands Stud, Darling Downs based sire Power(GB). “I only bought (Mississippi Morn 3-YO) him unraced after he won a jumpout at the Sunshine Coast about 10 days ago. I’ve only had him about a week ,” Williams said. Emerald mentor Glenda Bell and Rockhampton based hoop Warwick Satherley combined for their 14th win together when Inreadyness ($2.10 ) won the Moranbah BM 55 (1170m).
The temperature had reached 37 degrees when the last of the five races was run at 1pm while it soared towards 40 degrees at 3pm.

Moranbah Race Club’s Bianca Bulst and Katie Tatterson said they were grateful for the support of patrons who attended and the support from officials and competing racing stakeholders. “While the crowd was naturally down because of the heat it was still a successful meeting given the circumstances. We would like a big shout out recorded to our volunteers particularly the young people from the Moranbah Netball Association,” the two ladies said.
Moranbah’s next race meeting is set for March 29, 2025 and assuredly the weather will be cooler.

Happy 😀 Horses 🐎🐎 Tony Mc Mahon.

BREAKING NEWS.

Before we get started folks. Very important announcement which has just come through late today (Thursday).
It is a very early start to Moranbah races on Saturday at 11am and races will be run off every 30minutes with the last race at 1pm. This has been brought about by the extreme heat conditions predicted whereby Racing Queensland has brought into vogue its heat policy. A very sensible decision for stakeholders and horses. Arrive early and leave early before the heat takes its toll - congratulations Racing Queensland and Moranbah Race Club for looking after the best interests of humans and horses. Patrons can still bet with the strong ring of bookmakers throughout the afternoon on the southern races. Entertainment galore and a great after party planned.

FIELDS for Saturday’s Moranbah Miners Memorial races at Treasure Park racecourse have exceeded initial expectations.

With choices galore for trainers to choose from with country race meetings galore in Queensland of late it would not have surprised in the original 43 horses entered would fall away considerably at acceptance deadline this morning (Thursday).

Such was far from the case as MRC vice-President Bianca Bulst concurred. “We were very happy when 40 horses were confirmed by trainers to race. That’s an excellent result,” said Bulst.

Bianca was further thrilled when it was confirmed that 10 jockeys would take part on Saturday. “Yes the club is really happy about the good roll up of jockeys coming out to ride. That means all starters will have a rider. It’s terrible when horses have to be scratched through a jockey shortage. All we need now is a big crowd and early indications are that will be the case,” she said.

Jockeys are coming from SEQ; CWQ; Central Highlands; Leichardt district and Capricornia which includes Rockhampton. Female jockeys outnumber their male counterparts 6 to 4. At the corresponding meeting last November, the ladies rode the program. Among them were Rockhampton’s Tasha Chambers and Bowen’s Gabrielle Semmens. Both women have a full book of five rides each on Saturday. They well could share the major laurels again.

Happy 😃 Horses🐴🐎 Tony McMahon
