Ask the owner of a fussy eater and they will tell you it is the bane of their life. If you have one, you feel like your horse is the only horse in the world that won’t eat the beautifully prepared meals you put in front of him. And frustratingly sometimes they will eat, sometimes they won’t, and it’s not easy to figure out what causes the change.

Here are Pryde's 3 top tips for feeding fussy eaters:

1: REDUCE OR REMOVE SALT!

If your horse is eating slowly or doesn’t want to eat much at all, completely remove all salt and electrolyte from his feed. This will improve the taste of the feed and will also reduce pain caused if
your horse happens to have ulcers. Leave the salt and electrolyte out until appetite fully returns and then slowly reintroduce it until you find the amount your horse is happy to eat.

2: FEED COOKED GRAINS OR NON-GRAIN FEEDS

Feeding cooked grains (like our range of extruded feeds) or non-grain feeds (like EasiSport®) will keep starch out of the hindgut. This will allow the friendly fibre-fermenting bacteria to produce lots of vitamin B1, which in turn helps maintain your horse’s appetite. All of Pryde’s complete feeds are also fortified with B1 to ensure your horse’s requirement for this appetite stimulating vitamin are met.

3: FEED A RATION THAT TASTES GOOD!

The easiest way to keep your horse eating, is to feed something that tastes good. Using a fully fortified, complete feed and only adding extra supplements if absolutely necessary is a great way to start. All of Pryde’s feeds are designed to taste great and most of the time you simply don’t need to add anything to the diet except forage. Job done!
