Did you know that just like human children, puppies will shed their baby teeth and grow a whole new set of adult chompers? 🦷

Puppies normally shed their baby teeth between 4-6 months old, and by 7 months of age, all their adult teeth should have erupted. If your pup still has any baby teeth remaining at this time, these teeth could be abnormally “retained” (stuck), which can lead to painful crowding issues. 🐕

If you’re unsure about your pup’s dental health, we’d recommend booking a check-up with one of our dentally-diligent vets! 🩺

Did you know that “cat flu” is not one specific infection, but instead refers to the upper respiratory symptoms caused by a few common feline viruses and bacteria? 🦠

As well as cold-like symptoms (such as red, runny eyes and nasal discharge), affected cats may also develop a fever, breathing troubles, or ulcers in the mouth or eyes. 🐾

The good news? Cats can be vaccinated against some of the most common causes of cat flu, thereby lessening their unwellness should they be exposed! 😺

Whilst an energetic game of laser light chasing can be entertaining for both you and your cat, these toys should be used judiciously to avoid causing harm. 🔦

Ensure that you never shine the light directly into your pet’s eyes, and try to avoid using it in a way that pushes your cat beyond their fitness level. 🐈

It’s also a good idea to use pointers in moderation, and ensure you finish games by offering your pet something to finally “catch” (such as a favourite toy or treat) to avoid frustration or the development of obsessive behaviours. 🎾

For more information on safe feline environmental enrichment options, consult our feline-friendly team.

Deer antlers have become a popular long-lasting chew treat, but we usually caution owners against offering them to their pets. 🦌

Because deer antlers are particularly hard and unyielding, it’s not uncommon for dogs (especially young puppies with thin-walled baby teeth) to break their teeth when trying to chew on them. 🦷

Broken teeth are painful and can also develop tooth root infections (requiring surgical treatment) or even act as an entry point for dangerous tetanus bacteria. 🩹

For recommendations on the best chew treat options for your pet, consult our safety-savvy team!

Whilst dental disease is one of the most common causes of pongy breath in pets, our team also considers other potential issues when faced with a particularly smelly canine or feline oral cavity. 🐶🐱

These include:
🦷 Pieces of bone or clumps of fur stuck in between the teeth
🦷 Lumps in the mouth
🦷 Mouth injuries caused by licking a caustic substance or chewing an electrical cord
🦷 Internal health issues such as kidney disease

So, if you notice that your pet’s breath is getting a bit whiffy, it’s best to book them in for a prompt veterinary check-up! 🏥

With daily brushing being the gold standard in canine oral health care, our team would love to pass on a few tips to help make brushing your pet’s teeth more approachable:
1️⃣ Ensure that your pet’s mouth isn’t sore before starting to brush, or else they’ll naturally resist the process – book them in for a dental check-up with our vets if you’re unsure.
2️⃣ Ease your pet into brush-training by starting with some dry medical gauze wrapped over your finger. 🦷🪥
3️⃣ Don’t forget to offer your pet regular tasty bribes throughout! 🍖

For more advice on keeping your pet’s teeth in tip-top shape, chat to our helpful team. And if you have a great photo of your dog flashing their pearly whites, please post it below!

The first question many owners ask us about dental extractions in their pet is, “Will they still be able to eat properly?”

Firstly, remember that adult dogs have 42 permanent teeth whilst cats have 30, so your pet definitely has a few back-up chompers! 🐾

Secondly, extraction is only recommended for very abnormal or irreparably damaged teeth, which your pet is likely avoiding chewing with anyway. It’s very common for owners to notice their pet actually eating more comfortably after the removal of such teeth! 🦷

Old dogs require old-dog nutrition. 🐶🍽️ Nutritional requirements change as our dogs age. A puppy’s diet should be quite different from an old dog’s, as they have different energy, fibre and nutrient needs.

We strongly recommend feeding older dogs a specifically formulated food that addresses the unique nutritional needs of an older animal. This includes increased fibre, decreased calories, and increased supplementation of fatty acids. If you’re unsure what to feed your dog, contact us for advice. 📞🐾

Blood pressure checks are important for old cats. 🐱💉 Just like humans, cats can experience blood pressure issues as they age. While the causes for these issues are often different from humans', the effects can be just as dangerous. Uncontrolled hypertension (or high blood pressure) can wreak havoc on the body and increase the risk of death.

We recommend six monthly blood pressure checks for older cats as part of their physical check-up. This way, we can pick up issues early and initiate treatment if required. 🩺🐾

If your cat suddenly starts limping one day, you’ll probably want to know why. 🐱❓

Cats can limp for a variety of reasons, including acute (short-term) and chronic (long-term) conditions. For acute reasons, limping could be caused by an abscess, other infection, trauma, cancer, or inflammation. Sometimes, limping is caused by an acute flare-up of a chronic condition (e.g. arthritis).

Ultimately, the only way to know for sure and treat the limping is to see the veterinarian. 🩺 So don’t ignore your cat’s limp; see your vet if you spot any symptoms. 🐾

Don’t take the saying “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” too literally. All dogs should engage in training, exercise, and other environmental enrichment activities throughout their lives to keep their brains healthy and strong. 🐾 Just like humans are told to “use or lose” their brain power, the same concept applies to dogs. Daily walks where dogs can sniff, explore, and socialise, as well as puzzle toys and training, can help keep a dog’s mind sharp as they age and stave off doggy dementia. 🐕‍🦺🧩

Any eye changes in pets should be checked by the vet, as they can be a sign of serious disease.

However, some eye changes are considered normal, so knowing what is a normal eye change and what is not is essential. For example, as dogs get older, they often acquire a blueish, transparent haze to their eyes. 🐕👀 This is called nuclear sclerosis. It affects the lens of the eye and is often associated with reduced vision. As a rule, we always recommend older dogs get checked every six months to ensure changes are age-related and not disease-related. 🩺🐶

Don’t let cats fool you – they can suffer the effects of arthritis, too. 🐱

Cats are masters of hiding disease. When we recognise something isn’t right in our cats, a disease is often quite advanced. So, it pays to look for the subtle signs.

For arthritis, symptoms in cats include decreased movement, such as sleeping more, reluctance to jump up or jump down, and increased grumpiness. 😾 Remember, aging is not a disease, so if your cat’s behaviour has changed recently, make an appointment with one of our vets. 🐾

Do you have a dog with arthritis? Over the winter months, arthritis can often flare up causing increased pain, reduced mobility, and an all-around sad dog. 🐶

The good news is, there are plenty of things we can do to help arthritis. One of those is a course of under-the-skin injections that help improve diseased joints without putting stress on your dog’s other organs. 🐾

If you would like to learn more about how we can help your dog’s arthritis, contact us today. Let’s improve your dog’s arthritis symptoms together! 🌟

Geelong Animal Emergency Update:
Starting Monday the 14th of February onwards, Geelong Animal Emergency Clinic will no longer receive patients between 12am and 7am.
They will continue to provide an overnight hospitalization service for patients already in hospital prior to 12am and will see consultations up to 12am.
These changes are due to staffing shortages brought on by a worldwide lack of veterinarians, combined with an overwhelming demand for their services.
This has been affecting all veterinary clinics, both emergency and general practice. This includes us here at NGVC and Moriac Vets.
You may find when you call us here at Moriac Vet Clinic that most days are already fully booked before the day begins. Rest assured that we will always do our best to accommodate sick patients as soon as possible, but routine appointments may need to be scheduled weeks in advance. We urge you to be as proactive as possible about seeking care if concerned.
Options for emergency care after 12am will now have to head up to one of the following emergency clinics in Melbourne .
Animal Accident & Emergency Point Cook
(03) 8368 7400
Advanced Vet Care (Kensington)
(03) 9092 0400

Hi again everyone,

Unfortunately, just like any other business we are currently under staffing stress due to COVID.
For this week we will have very limited availability for appointments. Unfortunately we may not be able to accomodate any new clients or routine vaccinations. This will be in an effort to ensure that we have appointments available for pets with critical needs.
If you have pets on chronic medications please ensure you call us with ample time to refill these scripts.
We may also have changes to our opening hours, but we will post that here if it happens.
Please be kind to our staff as they are doing the best that they can.

COVID Update - January 5th

Starting tomorrow we have made the decision to return to contactless consulting.
We are a small team and need to do the best we can to mitigate the possibility of the clinic having to shut down due to isolation of staff. With the rapidly increasing cases in the Greater Geelong Region we feel we must take these measures to be able to stay open and help your pets.
We will update changes to hours or staffing if they arise.
For now, please call us when you arrive at the Clinic and we will come out and get your pet.
Thanks for the patience and understanding in what has been a very difficult two years for everybody.
We will continue to do the best we can to help your pets!

As of tomorrow we are unfortunately returning to no contact consulting.

We will maintain this model until all of our staff have been double vaccinated and we feel confident we will not be shut down as a Tier 1 Exposure site if a positive case enters the clinic. The criteria used to define a Tier 1 Exposure site is to be within 1.5m of a positive case and for more than 15 minutes.

This criteria, for all practical purposes, is every consult we do!

Each business is responsible to assess risk & provide a safe workplace for staff. As mentioned above not all our staff are fully vaccinated yet. With Covid virus circulating in the community in increasing numbers we need take a conservative approach and assume all clients are potentially carrying the virus. Our overwhelming aim is to remain safe, open & able to provide care for your pets.

We promise you’re pets actually don't mind. If they are anxious we work out a plan with you. They all still get treats, pats & lots of love when they come in!

We'll get back to "normal" as quickly as we can - please be kind - we're all in this together.

What lies beneath!
It is estimated that 60% of the symptoms of periodontal disease are hidden under the gum line. Dental X-rays are the only way to reliable identify these issues.
The two teeth circled below appear relatively normal upon visual inspection. But once an X-ray was taken a large amount of horizontal bone loss was noted. The thin yellow line shows were the normal bone level should be. These two teeth now have bone loss that exceeds 50% and need to be extracted.
Dont let Dental Month pass you by!

Moriac Vet Clinic Coming Soon!

Local Moriac residents Bryan Benshoof and Chloe McGillivray, along with partner Narelle Hooper are excited to be opening a Veterinary Clinic in Moriac on July 30th.

We currently run and own North Geelong Veterinary Clinic on the corner of Church Street and Vine street in Hamlyn Heights. This is a well established practice that has been servicing Geelong for over 20 years. We are looking forward to bringing the high quality of care and medicine that is provided here out to the new Moriac Clinic.

As Moriac and the surrounding area grows, we hope to grow along with it. A few services will need to be done here at the North Geelong Clinic as we continue to work on outfitting Moriac. These will be services such as x-rays, complex surgical procedures (orthopedics) and dentistry. We are happy to answer any and all questions regarding what we will be able to do or not do at the Moriac Clinic.

Thanks!
