BIG NEWS! I'm excited to announce that I'll be starting Puppy Preschool classes at @cottagevets from the 21st of May. I'm especially delighted to be teaming up with the incredible and caring team of vets and nurses at Cottage vets. If you or anyone you know is getting a puppy in the near future, make sure to book in for Puppy Preschool to help to set your puppy up to be a confident family pet.

The equivalent of an Easter egg hunt every day for your dog? It's like a dream come true, a dog allowed to practice dog-like behaviours! ππΎ #ditchthebowl #dogtraining #mentalstimulationfordogs
It's a rainy day, so we trained instead of getting soggy on our walk! We're a bit rusty, but we had fun! πβΊοΈ
A 'shake off' is a behaviour that dogs can do in response to anxiety or nervousness, when faced with conflict, excitement or simply to remove moisture or dirt from their body. The act of a dog shaking their whole body, particularly in response to stress or anxiety, can have interesting psychological effects.
Shaking off in the context of a displacement behaviour (a normal behaviour displayed out of context to indicate conflict) or stress relief, can help the dog to release built up tension and stress, a way for them to reset. Shaking may trigger the activation of the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for the 'rest and digest's response. This system helps counteract the stress response, leading to a reduction in heart rate, muscle tension and overall arousal.
There was an interesting study called 'At the heart of the walk' Budzinski & Budzinski, n.d, 2020, that showed over 165 shakes from a variety of dogs when on a walk. There was an average of a 12% pulse decrease recorded immediately after shaking off.
I will often acknowledge and praise my dogs 'shake offs', what an incredible and fascinating ability to be able to self regulate and help maintain their homeostasis.

Why do I value and use the 'I need space' vests?
They are a helpful additional visual cue to communicate to other dog owners to respect the dog's boundaries and the owner's request for space. While the vests can contribute to the overall safety of the dog and those around by providing a visible warning, they are not a substitute for proper training and management.

Merry Christmas Everyone, I wish you all the best during the holidays. Lots of love to my wonderful past and current clients, thank you all for supporting my business during this last yearβοΈ
Here is a quick snippet of our visitor routine which we have set up again ready for our visitors. This is to help our dogs stay calm when greeting guests and to help keep a distance if either dog or visitor is nervous.
For most guests, the dogs will come out from behind the barrier to greet them once the excitement has passed. If there are a few kids around however, it can be safer and easier to manage them if I give them a long lasting chew behind the barrier instead of letting them greet.
Stay safe and be merry!
