Thylacine lutruwita A tailored wildlife hospital and rehabilitation facility, supporting Tasmania's wildlife

Permanently closed.

The bigger picture for ongoing support for Tasmanian wildlife, August 2023:

We appreciate that the closure of Thylacine lutruwita is the end of an era and we acknowledge all of the contribution and support from the Thylacine team as well as the broader network of rehabilitators, carers and volunteers over the last three years.

The funding which has been in place for Thylacine lutruwita will continue, albeit in a new arrangement. The Elsie Cameron and Elsie Flood Foundations have undertaken a strategic review in relation to their funding of wildlife initiatives in Tasmania. As a result, funding is being redirected to Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary to support extended access to wildlife primary care (more hours and days) and build specialist capability - all under one roof. The Feline Fix service is on pause as at August 2023, but will re-open in due course. This reflects an ongoing commitment to ensuring that affordable cat de-sexing is available in southern Tasmania. Please keep an eye on Bonorong’s website for more information in weeks and months to come.

We’re very pleased that there will be continuing funding for wildlife in Tasmania and thank everyone for their contribution to Thylacine lutruwita. We are proud of the part that Thylacine has played in the wildlife cause to date.

Existing Feline Fix bookings for the 21st and 22nd of August 2023 will be honoured. After that time stay tuned, as the Feline Fix service is not over yet – it is on pause and will become available in the not too distant future, under new management.

WIRES Emergency Rescuer Ned was called out to assist an adult female Pademelon experiencing seizures.

Unfortunately, the adult Pademelon passed. However Ned found a young joey after conducting a pouch check.

The juvenile pademelon only weighed 714 grams and was taken to the vets at Thylacine lutruwita for further assessment.

The pademelon joey is now rehabilitating with a local carer until he is old enough for release.

Thanks to your ongoing support, WIRES can rescue, rehabilitate and release injured native wildlife 365 days a year!

The party's not over yet!
Just because "kitten season" is apparently over doesn't mean it has actually stopped. There are still so many cats and kittens out there still needing to be de-sexed. So don't wait till the madness starts again, get your cat de-sexed and help us reduce kitten season.

We would like to send a special shout out to Layla and her school friends from Lauderdale who have been fundraising by making and selling bracelets so they can donate to Thylacine. Thylacine lutruwita is very grateful for all donations and every little bit helps us to help our wildlife.

BFFs
The wonderful nurses at Thylacine lutruwita do everything they can to ensure our Feline Fix patients have the very best care and in this case Lou Lou's friend Latte thought she was the best option to comfort Lou Lou during her recovery from surgery. These two beautiful girls from Rescue Cats Safe Haven would not leave each others sides during their stay at Thylacine.

TAWNY FROGMOUTH

The genus name, Podargus, is from the Greek work for gout. Why? Unlike owls they don't have curved talons on their feet; in fact, their feet are small, and they’re said to walk like a gout-ridden man! Their species name, strigoides, means owl-like.

They’re nocturnal and carnivorous, but Tawny Frogmouths aren't owls – they’re more closely related to Nightjars. Tawny Frogmouths mate for life and in the wild they can live up to 14 years. A breeding pair often stays in the same territory for more than 10 years.

This is Rummy a Blotched Blue Tongue Lizard and today was his lucky day. He completed his rehabilitation got released! Rummy was admitted on the 1st of March with a fractured jaw and swollen eye. Dr Jackie removed a 8mm grass seed from his right eye when he arrived in hospital and with daily pain medication, antibiotics, supportive care and a good diet he has healed well and was able to be released back into the wild today.
