Hot weather warning: A message from our emergency vets!

As we experience the upcoming hot weather, it’s important that pet owners are alert for their pets' well-being.

Heat stress can affect pets in an instant. It’s an emergency situation and can be fatal.

▪️ Avoid exercising your pet in the heat; walk in the early mornings or late evenings when temperatures are cooler.
▪️ Before walking on pavement, asphalt, or concrete, test how hot the surface is by placing your hand on the surface for 5 seconds. If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your pet.
▪️ Make sure they have a cool, shaded, and well-ventilated area with access to plenty of fresh drinking water. On very hot days, this might mean moving them inside.
▪️ Never leave pets unattended in hot cars.

Signs of heat stress may include:

▪️ Salivation
▪️ Difficulty breathing
▪️ Bright red gums
▪️ Collapse

So, keep a close eye on your pet companions, and if you are concerned your pet may be suffering from heat stress, contact us immediately on 5979 9600.

Billie, a sweet Catahoula Leopard, was surrendered to Starting Over Dog Rescue (SODR) at ten weeks old. Billie had urinary incontinence, a result of a congenital birth defect known as ectopic ureters, SODR took her in and began her journey to recovery.

Ectopic ureters are when the tubes from the kidneys to the bladder (ureters) empty into the urethra instead of the bladder. This results in permanent incontinence, as urine constantly leaks out of the urethra and is not stored in the bladder as it should.

Billie underwent surgery to correct her ectopic ureters, but unfortunately, the severity of her condition meant she remained incontinent (this is not uncommon in dogs with ectopic ureters to have an inability to store urine normally in their bladder). She then had a second surgery where an Artificial Urethral Sphincter was placed.

Billie has a port in her leg and occasionally visits our medicine team to inflate the artificial sphincter. She otherwise leads a normal life and has minimal incontinence.

Now nearly three years old, she is pictured here on a recent visit with her owner, Sarsha, who fostered and adopted her, and Elise, our medicine nurse. We love seeing her doing so well. 💪🩷

Today, we assisted a wedgetail eagle which was found in a paddock and unable to fly. We anesthetised the bird to perform a physical examination and rule out fractures. Blood tests revealed that the eagle was anaemic and likely hadn’t eaten for a few days. We administered pain relief and fluids before transporting him to the veterinary department at Healesville Animal Sanctuary, which has a specialised raptor rehabilitation facility for ongoing care.

We wish this magnificent boy the very best of luck in getting well.

The work done by both our Peninsula Vet Care Mornington and Emergency & Referral teams was wonderful.

Pictured is Dr Alasdair with the beautiful Gigi, a Polish Lowland Sheepdog, who presented with a condylar fracture secondary to a humeral intracondylar fissure. OUCH!

Humeral intracondylar fissure (HIF) is a rare and often hard-to-diagnose condition. It's a weakness in the humeral condyle – part of the forelimb elbow joint, that can lead to a severe sudden-onset complete fracture, which happened to Gigi. The break is visible on her post-surgery X-ray.

Interestingly, we have found no record of a humeral intracondylar fissure recognised in the Polish Lowland Sheepdog breed. This could be a first?!

Good news, Gigi is expected to fully recover, testament to the resilience of our furry friends with fractures.

Dr Alasdair Renwick is available for case advice, consults, and procedures. Phone us today (03) 5979 9600.

Marlowe's case is a rare gem in the veterinary world. It's only the fifth reported instance of levopositioned caudal vena cava and retrocaval ureter in dogs worldwide.

Surgical resident Dr Eleanor (Elee) Woolley recently published a case report co-authored by Dr Kathryn Hogan, Medicine Registrar, and Dr Arthur House, Surgery Specialist, which discusses the rare vascular abnormality that we now know occurs mainly in Bernese Mountain Dogs.

Marlowe was born with his caudal vena cava on the wrong side of his body, trapping his left ureter, which is the tube that drains urine from the left kidney to the bladder. This malformation caused a blockage in the ureter, leading to dilation and discomfort.

To relieve this compression, Drs. Elee and Arthur performed a complicated surgical procedure where they transected, rerouted and anastomosed the trapped ureter.

Now, over 12 months on, Marlowe's doing well. His owners report a dramatic improvement in his demeanour, and he no longer has any abdominal pain or inappetence.

Marlowe's successful recovery is an excellent outcome and a cause for celebration.

Well done to Elee and the team, and big congrats on getting published in Wiley's academic publications library!

A touching moment as staff celebrated Abbey, the labradoodle's discharge from hospital after a two-week stay due to a severe infection. Here's her story.

Abbey presented to our Emergency team, referred by her GP, following a short history of bad vomiting and diarrhoea and an exploratory surgery that had not found the cause. She became extremely unwell.

Abbey was diagnosed with necrotising pancreatitis, a very severe form of the disease. She developed an abdominal infection and severe oesophagitis (heartburn), which caused her to have difficulty keeping food down. She required a second abdominal surgery to help clear up the infection and biopsies to confirm her diagnosis.

Abbey remained in hospital receiving supportive care involving fluids, pain relief, and nutrition via a feeding tube, along with intensive nursing care for a massive 13 days.

Now back home with her Dad, Phil, Abbey is improving rapidly and returning to her bouncy self.

Our entire hospital team, including Dr. Susie, a Medicine Specialist, Dr. Chris, a Surgery Specialist, and the medicine and intensive care nurses, worked around the clock to ensure Abbey's recovery. She was very patient and sweet-natured throughout her treatment. Everyone was thrilled to see her progress and to go home with her family.
