Peninsula Vet proudly honours our veterinary community in recognition of World Veterinary Day, serving as a valuable reminder that they are essential health workers.
This week, we celebrated across our five vet clinics and our emergency and referral hospital with yummy grazing platters, hot dogs, and kit-kats!
Our video represents our team of nearly 60 veterinarians, picturing but a handful of our long-standing, senior, and recently graduated vets.
The 2024 World Veterinary Day theme is 'Veterinarians are essential health workers'.
In the WVA's words, "Veterinarian competencies must be regarded as an essential and integral part of health at large. The application of veterinary science contributes to animal health and well-being and human physical, mental, and social well-being.
This dimension of veterinarians' work often remains invisible to society, but protecting and improving the health of people and their communities is an essential part of the vet profession.
All graduated veterinarians have undergone comprehensive medical training, and regardless of their professional area of practice, are responsible for promoting public health, food safety, and security."
What is your vet's name? Please feel free to give them a shout-out in the comments section.

Kicking off Veterinary Receptionist Week with a huge THANK YOU to our receptionists.
You are the key players on the team – working on the frontlines and caring for our clients. You do it all with respect and compassion. You are both the first and the last face our clients and patients see.
Pictured here are a few smiling faces that greet you and your pets when you visit us. We employ talented, dedicated reception staff so our nurses can spend more time with patients.
Happy Veterinary Receptionist Week, we would go to pieces without you.
Did you know? Peninsula Vet Care is a placement hospital for students pursuing a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine to become a veterinarian.
During their final year at the University of Melbourne, veterinary students complete one of their core rotations with us. They spend two weeks gaining professional experience working under the supervision of our veterinary teams.
The placement involves one week within one of our five vet clinics and one week in either our specialist practice or our emergency and critical care service, depending on the student's interests.
We see around 150 students through our hospitals each year. That is eight students each week!
The program has been running since 2022, and we are proud to continue to play a practical part in their training and education in a real clinical environment.
A big shout out to our staff—it takes a high-quality and invested team of professionals to function smoothly as a teaching hospital. In addition to doing their jobs, they are teachers, mentors, and role models for the Vets of our future.
Many of our vets, nurses, managers, and support staff turned out last month to support the My Mount Eliza Run & Fun Festival and participate in the run or the all-paws walk with their pets.
We were at the finish line to give away dog treats and medals to all the four-legged participants. We are delighted to report that our pet first aid service saw no injured or unwell patients, but it was great to have them on standby on the day.
Thanks to everyone and their pets who stopped by our marquee to say hello. Congratulations to Geoff and all involved on another successful day.
A message from our vets about snakes: We are experiencing a high number of pets admitted to our clinics and emergency hospital due to snake bites, with 44 pets treated for either a confirmed or suspected snake bite since Christmas.
If your pet is bitten, we do not need to know the species of snake to be able to treat your pet, so please leave the snakes alone and head to the vet immediately.
In situations of heat stress, taking five minutes to run tap water over your pet can help save their life. A big thanks to Dr Clara, Emergency & Critical Care Vet, for sharing this important information.
If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for them. A video message from our emergency vets to keep a close eye on your pets in the heat, avoid exercising them and ensure they have access to a cool area, which may mean bringing them inside on hot or humid days.
Young Arabella snuck out while her owners slept, and unfortunately, she was hit by a car. Remarkably she managed to get back home with two broken hip joints. She was found by her owner in her backyard.
Thanks to Drs Georgina and Ben, after two operations (one for each hip), we are glad to report she is back up and walking again.
Unfortunately, we see an increased amount of road trauma during summer. Have you ever thought about what you would do if your pet were hit by a car? We hope the below details help.
What to do if a dog or cat is hit by a car:
1️⃣ Do not chase them if they run away, instead follow without adding stress
2️⃣ If severely injured, protect your hands when picking them up - distressed or injured animals can bite unexpectedly.
3️⃣ Wrap the animal in a blanket before lifting them and transporting them if possible
4️⃣ Head straight to a vet to check for internal injuries.
Sometimes you may not know your pet has suffered a road trauma. Here are some signs you can check for:
• Frayed nails
• Greyish smudges on the hair
• Poor leg use or limping
• Breathing heavily from chest trauma
• Hiding or lethargy from pain.
Dr Ben Porter describes a TPLO (tibial plateau levelling osteotomy), one of a range of surgical techniques used to treat a cruciate ligament rupture.
When a rupture occurs, as in Izzys' knee, the ligament can never regrow or repair. Unless surgery is performed, the knee joint will remain unstable and degenerative arthritis will occur.
The TPLO alters the geometry of the knee and allows it to function successfully without a ligament.
Thanks Dr Ben!
A nod to our Nurses!
They’re knowledgeable, compassionate, and not afraid to get their hands dirty. They dedicate their lives to caring for sick and injured animals.
We have more than 90 nurses at Peninsula Vet Care who provide expertise and care for the much-loved pets in our community.
Tomorrow is Vet Nurse Day, a reminder of just how invaluable they are, and deserve a big nod of appreciation.
Share your messages for our nurses below so they know how special they are.

Does your dog have arthritis? We are thrilled to inform you there is a new therapy available that alleviates arthritis pain in a monthly treatment. Watch our video to hear Dr Ben explain how the new treatment works.
If your dog is showing signs like limping, slowing down on walks, being slow to rise, or having difficulty jumping, call us. We would love to help. 🐶👩⚕️
We thought we would share this little video with you, not just because it’s cute, but because our veterinary surgeons see firsthand the benefits to pets and their families when pets come for regular health checks and blood tests.
Did you know? Even when pets seem healthy:
1 in 7 Adults (1 – 2 years of age)
1 in 5 Seniors (7-10 years of age )
2 in 5 Geriatrics (10+ years of age)
will reveal changes that require further investigation.
A regular, thorough examination will help us identify issues like arthritis, dental problems, and early organ disease in time to make a difference.
Thank you for watching. ❤️
Happy, healthy lives.
This week, we are recognising our 43rd birthday!
We opened the doors to our very first animal hospital in Dromana on 30th June 1980.
Over the past 43 years, Peninsula Vet Care has grown and evolved to meet the community's emerging needs.
From our first hospital in Dromana in 1980 to the family of five general practice clinics and 24/7 Emergency and Referral Hospital today, we are proud to still serve the Mornington Peninsula community.
A big thank you to all the dedicated staff, clients, pets, and families, who continue to support us. We acknowledge you all have helped shape Peninsula Vet into who we are today.
🙌👩👧👦🐶🐱🙏
Today we farewelled one of our most longstanding and experienced vets Dr Jodi Vermass, who hung up her stethoscope after an incredible 23-year career with Peninsula Vet Care.
Jodi has been such an integral part of the success of PVC, especially in the early days when she single-handedly managed all GP locations whilst also working as a vet!
Jodi has spent her career supporting and mentoring vets, caring for animals, great and small, pets and wildlife, and helping people from all walks of life access pet healthcare.
Locally, she has worked to help address the stray cat population on the MP. She has generously volunteered her time and skills as a vet abroad in countries like Bali, India, and the Cook Islands, which she plans to continue.
Looking forward, she also hopes to be more involved with environmental projects locally, now time permits.
Hats off to Jodi. We are super proud of her. Her contributions are much more than this post can convey.
We wish her all the best and look forward to her continued friendship and support. Above all – thank you, we’ve been fortunate to have you as part of the Pen Vet family.
In happy events this week, Dr. Julie delivered six healthy puppies - three boys and three girls— via C-section at our Rosebud hospital for her daughter’s dog - Harriet!
Delivering a litter of puppies or kittens takes a team working together. As the vet removes each puppy from the uterine horn, they get transferred to our nursing team, where it’s all hands on deck to stimulate the puppies to encourage their first breaths. The happy family is reunited once the babies are breathing strongly on their own and mum has woken up from anaesthesia.
It's always thrilling when we get the chance to bring adorable babies like these into the world.
Congratulations to proud mum Harriet on the birth of her beautiful litter of puppies.
Kicking off Veterinary Receptionist Week with a huge THANK YOU to all our receptionists.
You are the key players on the team – working on the frontlines and caring for our clients. You do it all with respect and compassion. You are both the first and the last face our clients and patients see.
We employ talented dedicated reception staff so our nurses can spend more time with patients. In addition to being front-of-house professionals, they are also trained in nutrition, parasite control, and patient triage, to name a few.
Happy Veterinary Receptionist Week, you’re the bomb; we would go to pieces without you.
The message from our Emergency & Referral Hospital (ERH) team is loud and clear – keep the Easter treats out of reach from your four-legged friends.
A reminder our emergency service will be open 24/7 over the Easter long weekend. So, if you have an emergency or are worried about your pet's health, please call us on 5979 9600, and we can help assess the need for emergency treatment.
Wishing everyone a safe and happy Easter from the Emergency team.
P.S. Remember to send us your pet’s Easter-themed photos this weekend :-)
