We are celebrating Uggboot, the Persian's birthday! We thought we would share how Ugg spends his day as a little treat. We interviewed him, and here is what he said:

"🌞 Morning stretches and window-watching: I start my day basking in the morning sun and keeping an eye on the birds outside.

🐶 Greeting patients: Whether it's a nervous pup or a curious kitten, I give them a warm welcome. Sometimes, a gentle head bump is all it takes to make them feel at ease.

📚 Supervising the staff: I take my job very seriously and ensure everything runs smoothly, from monitoring the reception area to inspecting the treatment rooms. My humans say I'm the best assistant they could ask for.

🍲 Treat time: A hardworking cat needs his snacks. I have a secret stash of treats that the lovely nurses spoil me with. It's all healthy stuff.

🛏️ Cozy naps: Between all the action, I find the coziest spots to take a kip. The supply cupboard is my favourite – it's warm and quiet.

💖 Spreading love: My favourite part of the job is spreading love and comfort. Whether a gentle purr or a snuggle, I'm here to make everyone's day a little brighter.

👩‍⚕️ Most of all, I get to be part of a fantastic team dedicated to helping animals, and in return, I receive endless love and cuddles.

I hope to see some of you at the clinic soon.” From Ugboot.

Daisy had been vomiting, not eating, unable to p**p and very lethargic for a few days. Her owners brought her to our Rye clinic.

After blood work, X-rays and an ultrasound, there was enough evidence to go ahead with an exploratory laparotomy with the high suspicion of a foreign body causing an obstruction.

Dr Emma located a stone fruit pip in Daisy’s intestines.

Daisy doesn’t usually swallow things she shouldn’t, but this shows us that we must always be careful and vigilant about what dogs can get into, and if your dog shows symptoms, contact your vet urgently, gastrointestinal blockages can be life threatening.

Under the skilled hands of Dr Emma, Daisy made a speedy and complete recovery and is now back to her bouncy, crazy self.

Thanks Emma!

Bowie, the Border Collie cross, visited Peninsula Vet Care Rosebud after his owners noted he was no longer acting like his usual, energetic self. He had been vomiting, tired, and had a complete lack of appetite.

Bowie also happens to be a culprit for chewing things he shouldn't.

After hospital admission, blood work and x-rays, a very identifiable metal object was inside his gastrointestinal tract (a 50c coin). Foreign body ingestion can run a high risk of intestinal obstruction and rupture, and in this case, also copper toxicity, so surgery was recommended.

Under Dr. Sienn's skilled hands, the coin was successfully removed from Bowie's gastrointestinal tract. He was able to return home that night, feeling much more like himself, albeit 50c poorer!

Peninsula Vet proudly honours our veterinary community in recognition of World Veterinary Day, serving as a valuable reminder that they are essential health workers.

This week, we celebrated across our five vet clinics and our emergency and referral hospital with yummy grazing platters, hot dogs, and kit-kats!

Our video represents our team of nearly 60 veterinarians, picturing but a handful of our long-standing, senior, and recently graduated vets.

The 2024 World Veterinary Day theme is 'Veterinarians are essential health workers'.

In the WVA's words, "Veterinarian competencies must be regarded as an essential and integral part of health at large. The application of veterinary science contributes to animal health and well-being and human physical, mental, and social well-being.

This dimension of veterinarians' work often remains invisible to society, but protecting and improving the health of people and their communities is an essential part of the vet profession.

All graduated veterinarians have undergone comprehensive medical training, and regardless of their professional area of practice, are responsible for promoting public health, food safety, and security."

What is your vet's name? Please feel free to give them a shout-out in the comments section.

Did you know? Peninsula Vet Care is a placement hospital for students pursuing a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine to become a veterinarian.

During their final year at the University of Melbourne, veterinary students complete one of their core rotations with us. They spend two weeks gaining professional experience working under the supervision of our veterinary teams.

The placement involves one week within one of our five vet clinics and one week in either our specialist practice or our emergency and critical care service, depending on the student's interests.

We see around 150 students through our hospitals each year. That is eight students each week!

The program has been running since 2022, and we are proud to continue to play a practical part in their training and education in a real clinical environment.

A big shout out to our staff—it takes a high-quality and invested team of professionals to function smoothly as a teaching hospital. In addition to doing their jobs, they are teachers, mentors, and role models for the Vets of our future.

Meg the Boxer was only 18-weeks-old when she collapsed and vomited while playing outdoors after receiving a bee sting to her lip!

Her owners immediately brought her to our Rye clinic, where she was quickly stabilised, and the bee sting was identified and removed.

Meg has since been diagnosed with a Hymenoptera allergy, meaning an allergy to bee venom.

Meg has been receiving venom immunotherapy with her vet at Rye, Dr Robert (Rob). This treatment involves injecting tiny amounts of the allergen into Meg at set intervals while she is closely monitored. It works by desensitising her immune system to the venom and aims to prevent her immune system from overreacting if she is bitten or stung again. It is the only proven way to prevent anaphylactic reactions.

"Meg is seven months into her venom immunotherapy treatment and tolerates her injections very well with no adverse reactions, and we always look forward to her monthly visits with us at the clinic." Said Dr Rob

Meg's owner said, "She is living her best boxer life, and it's wonderful for us as a family to not have to worry about her safety outside."

Dr Rob holds a Membership of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Sciences (ANZCVS), which is an official recognition of his knowledge in small animal internal medicine.

Keep an eye out for Rob. He is based at Rye and visits all our Pen Vet locations to support clients who need medicine treatments in conjunction with our medicine specialists.

Many of our vets, nurses, managers, and support staff turned out last month to support the My Mount Eliza Run & Fun Festival and participate in the run or the all-paws walk with their pets.

We were at the finish line to give away dog treats and medals to all the four-legged participants. We are delighted to report that our pet first aid service saw no injured or unwell patients, but it was great to have them on standby on the day.

Thanks to everyone and their pets who stopped by our marquee to say hello. Congratulations to Geoff and all involved on another successful day.

April is heartworm awareness month, and we are sharing this story from our longstanding and recently retired vet, Dr. Jodi. She has been volunteering with Vets Beyond Borders on Thursday Island in the Torres Strait, providing veterinary care to a community of about 3000 people who have no permanent vet service.

“The work we did included 20 pets desexed, 94 pets vaccinated and supplied heartworm and other parasite treatment and 1 pet treated for a shark bite! Heartworm had infected nearly every dog we tested that wasn’t receiving prevention, which was frightening” Dr Jodi wrote.

“It had also infected some dogs that were receiving monthly treatments where some gaps in dosing may have allowed the dogs to become infected. We treated 8 dogs to try to kill their heartworm infection. This is a costly, painful and potentially dangerous treatment for the pet so it isn’t something every owner is able or willing to do and unfortunately, some dogs are too unwell to undergo the treatment. We diagnosed another 11 dogs who will hopefully all be able to receive treatment at the next Vets Beyond Borders visit.”

Heartworm is a dangerous and potentially fatal disease in dogs. The take home, remember to ensure your dog is up to date with their annual preventative injection.

Please call us if you are unsure if your pet is protected.

A message from our vets about snakes: We are experiencing a high number of pets admitted to our clinics and emergency hospital due to snake bites, with 44 pets treated for either a confirmed or suspected snake bite since Christmas.

If your pet is bitten, we do not need to know the species of snake to be able to treat your pet, so please leave the snakes alone and head to the vet immediately.

Meet brave Boston, snake bite survivor. Boston was bitten by a snake in his own backyard in McCrae. Due to the severity of the bite, he was with us for one week and on a mechanical ventilator for five days in an induced coma.

It was a long, arduous wait for his owners, but fortunately, Boston pulled through, and we were able to get him home. However, sadly, not all cases turn out as well as Boston's.

"How you respond in the minutes after a bite could be the difference between life and death". Our Vets say.

Rest assured, all our clinics and our emergency hospital are equipped, and staff are trained to treat pets for snake bites.

If your pet is bitten, head to a vet immediately. The prognosis depends on early treatment.

Sharing this fantastic news from our referral hospital. We are currently one of only a few hospitals in Australia using the new breed-specific implants. It's a great LEAP forward, with thanks to Dr Alasdair. 🤩

Navy, the French bulldog, had a very complex fracture of the humerus (fracture of the upper arm bone), and it was highly likely that he would require a limb amputation. However, much to his owner's delight, the amputation never took place.

The turning point for Navy was when his vet referred him to Dr Alasdair Renwick, Specialist Orthopaedic Surgeon, who utilised two tiny implants perfectly tailored for the French bulldog to save his leg.

"We are one of only a few hospitals in Australia using breed-specific implants, an option for humeral fractures in French bulldogs and spaniels." Said Dr Alasdair.

Navy is Alasdair's first patient to receive the new technology. Alasdair performed a practice surgery on an exact model of Navy's humerus bone, similar to the one pictured below, which we had 3D printed, so Alasdair could ensure Navy's leg was fixable before going ahead.

"I'm excited to share with the community Navy's great results. Due to the complexity of the fracture, he will always have a slight limp, but it has been wonderful to save his leg and see him happily trotting around the hospital at his three-month check-up."

If your pet has a complex fracture, speak to your vet about a referral to Dr Alasdair or call us.
