πŸŽ„πŸΆ Keep Christmas Merry & Safe for Your Dog πŸΆπŸŽ„

The festive season is fun for us, but it can be overwhelming (and risky!) for our pets. Follow our Naughty & Nice tips to help your dog enjoy a safe and happy Christmas.

✨ Create a Nice environment:
β€’ Create a calm, safe space away from the celebrations, with their favorite toy, blanket, and fresh water
β€’ Make sure fresh water is always available, especially on hot days
β€’ Keep a bowl of pet-friendly treats handy to discourage guests from sharing food from their plates
β€’ Keep doors and gates closed to prevent escapes
β€’ Keep decorations out of reach to avoid them being used as chew toys
β€’ Don’t leave gifts unattended, particularly food items

🚫 Naughty – Foods to Avoid:
β€’ Sweets & chocolate
β€’ Mince pies & plum pudding
β€’ Avocado
β€’ Cooked bones
β€’ Alcohol
β€’ Left overs
β€’ Sultanas & raisins
β€’ Onions & garlic
β€’ Macadamia nuts

Our clinics will be closed Christmas day and Boxing day. If you suspect your dog has eaten something they shouldn’t, please call our Peninsula Vet Emergency & Referral Hospital on 5979 9600, so we can help right away.

With temperatures to reach 30 across the peninsula this week, this is a great reminder to keep our four legged friends comfortable and safe in the summer heat! 🌞

🚨 Hot weather warning! 🚨

With high temperatures across the east coast of Australia this week, knowing how to keep your pet safe from the heat has never been more important. Whether they’re in cars, on the back of utes, or outside without enough shade and water, heat can kill and cause life-threatening heatstroke.

πŸš— Never leave your animal unattended in a car.
Even on mild days, the temperature inside a parked car can become dangerously hot within minutes, even in the shade or with windows down. If you’re heading out, take your animal with you or leave them safely at home.

β˜€οΈ Hot surfaces = big risks.
The heat risks don’t just apply to cars; the surface of tray-back utes can get extremely hot too. Animals left on the back without shade and water are at serious risk of burns, heat stress or even death.

πŸ’§ Keep them cool:
β€’ Always provide plenty of fresh water and shade
β€’ Walk your dog early in the morning or late in the evening when it’s cool
β€’ Bring pets indoors where it is cool (aircon or fans help!)
β€’ Small pets like rabbits, guinea pigs and birds should be kept in cool, well-ventilated areas away from direct sunlight
β€’ Remember pets can get sunburnt too, especially those with light or thin coats.

🚨If you suspect an animal is suffering from heatstroke, move them to a cool, shaded area, apply room temperature or cool water to their body, offer water if they are aware and able to drink and swallow safely, and seek veterinary attention immediately.

If you see an animal left alone in a car and showing signs of heatstroke, call the Police (000) or contact your local RSPCA.

Let’s keep our pets safe - no matter the temperature❀️

🐾 Did you know flea eggs hatch as the weather warms up, and newly hatched fleas seek out the nearest host – often an unprotected pet..

🌱 In Australia, ticks (especially paralysis ticks) and fleas thrive in warm, humid conditions, making spring through summer their peak season.

⚠️ These pests don’t just cause itching and discomfort; they can spread disease and, in the case of paralysis ticks, cause sudden paralysis or trouble breathing. If you notice these signs, seek emergency care immediately.

βœ… Prevention is key. While activity peaks in warmer months, fleas and ticks are a year-round risk. Protect your pet with regular prevention.

πŸ“ž Call us today to find the best protection for your furry friend.
