WARNING! Paralysis ticks are out in force! Please ensure that your pets are on a suitable tick prevention.
If your animal shows any symptoms, please call us immediately 40981888 and remember that Mossman Veterinary Surgery provides emergency afterhours services....as sometimes it may be too late by the time you drive to Cairns!

Please be mindful of the fact that we will not provide advice over the phone. All afterhours calls are for the sole purpose of attending the clinic for emergency treatment, we cannot provide advice without first seeing your animal.

We are the only vet clinic offering afterhours, this means we cannot be everywhere at the same time, so if the vet is attending another emergency and is unavailable, we suggest you call the 24/7 clinic in Cairns.

We hope everyone made it through Jasper safe and sound. Like everyone else we are involved in clean ups both at our homes and at the clinic. We have very limited communications and are also affected by the town water supply issues.

We will have someone on site on Friday if you need us, but it looks like our phones are still going to be an issue with lack of service.

We know we are the only clinic that provides afterhours, and that access to cairns is now very limited.
We have been unable to access facebook messages as this service is down. SMS to emergency phone is more likely to get through.

This is beyond our control unfortunately. Once everything is back to normal we will let you know.

We have intermittent phone service, you can try the emergency phone but please be aware we may not get your messages until some time later. Again, this is beyond our control. Hopefully services will be restored soon.

As cyclone Jasper approaches we would like to remind everyone to ensure that your pets have safe shelter from the approaching weather.
We will be closing for the rest of the week so we can do some maintenance, and prepare for the approach of jasper, but we will still be available if you need usโ€ฆ..just not for regular consults.
In case of power outages, phones may not work- but if the vehicles are on site there will be someone available if you need assistance.
Once jasper has made its way to its end we will advise further as to whether we are able to get into the clinic.
We will be open as usual monday though once the storm has passed.
Keep safe everyone.

Bear came in today for his regular acupuncture treatment.
Acupuncture helps to stimulate the release of the pain relieving and anti-inflammatory chemicals as well as relax muscles at the site of the needle insertion, causing both local and more generalised pain relief. Veterinary acupuncture can improve blood flow to tissue, increase oxygenation and remove metabolic waste and toxins.
Dr.Susan has been providing acupuncture treatments for all kinds of animals for over 15 years, and is happy to discuss with you if you would like acupuncture for your pets.
Call 40981888 to make an appointment.

Be aware that Cane toads are abundant at present!
At all stages of their lifecycle cane toads are poisonous. From eggs to tadpoles to adults, and even dead dried cane toads, the ingestion of their toxin can be fatal, or at least cause serious symptoms. Their toxins break down extremely slowly, and only once they are completely decomposed are they safe.
Poisoning occurs when a dog comes in contact with a cane toad through โ€˜mouthingโ€™ the toad; through biting or licking. When a cane toad is attacked or threatened they release a potent and fast-acting toxin, milky white in colour, from their parotid glands. This toxin, called bufotoxin and is made up of adrenaline, serotonin, and tryptophan like compounds, is also present in their body tissues as well. They can also sq**rt the poison up to two metres.
The toxin elicits its effects when it is absorbed via the mucous membranes, most commonly the gums but also via the eyes, nose and tongue. It is very rarely ingested. For example, if a cane toad is โ€˜mouthedโ€™ the toxin will stick to the tongue and gums your pet, which rapidly absorbs across the mucous membranes and into the bloodstream where it targets the heart, gastrointestinal tract, and nervous system.

In less severe cases, such as drooling and/or vomiting the following steps will be taken:
* Decontamination by continued wiping of the mouth to reduce further toxin absorption
* Medications to stop vomiting and/or to stabilise heart rate
* Intravenous fluids to assist with diuresis of the toxin and maintain blood pressure

In severe cases, such as seizures, tremors, rigidity, or disorientation; along with the above treatments the below measures will also be taken:
* Oxygen therapy for those with breathing difficulties
* Medications to control seizures including anaesthesia
* Active cooling as most animals have an elevated body temperature from increased muscle contractions
* Blood tests to assess severity of illness and concurrent organ damaged
* Electrocardiograph (ECG) to assess for changes in heart rhythms

Recovery is directly related to the age, weight and health of the animal and the amount of toxin it ingests. Although most animals recover within 12 hrs of envenomation if treatment is started early, some animals may require much longer treatment and the toxin can take up to 72hrs to clear the system, increasing the risk of death of the animal.

Although there are not usually any lasting effects of the toxin once it clears the system, in severe cases death can occur due to secondary complications, even following initial recovery due to the effects of the toxin on the heart and brain.

If your pet is effected by toad toxin its important to wipe out its mouth, and seek assistance as quickly as possible. 40981888 for assistance

Happy horses birthday!

In Australia, every horse has its birthday on the first day of August each year - known as the horses' birthday. And while it might not be their exact birth day, the date of August 1 allows standardisation in horse events, like racing, and is linked to the breeding season of horses.
