Well said Yvonne. Thanks
𧥠I want a âcalm puppyâ?
Letâs talk about reality.
I hear it ALL the time: âI want a calm puppy.â
My reply? âSorry, I donât have any.â
Because hereâs the truth: even this wonderful breed
The Australian Cobberdog has a puppy stage.
Yes â even Cobberdogs.
When families Google Cobberdogs, the descriptions seem flawless. But I spend about eight weeks helping families come back down to earth with realistic expectations.
Puppies are fun, theyâre squishy and adorable â but theyâre also:
snapping teeth
chewing things they shouldnât zoomies
mess,
destruction or toilet accidents
Nipping
Biting
Jumping
The puppy stage can be exasperating and frustrating, the pup needs guidance, they are learning !!
The more you put in the more you get out and everyone that the puppy interacts with needs to be consistent with them.
Itâs a bit like having a new baby and expecting them to come out speaking five languages.
We would never expect such a thing so letâs remember that cobbers need to be babies for a while too and you their teacher needs to teach them what is appropriate and what isnât
They need to know when you are happy or sad with them
They need you to show them the world
To protect them and to be their leader
They need to learn how to be alone and they need calmness training
They come ready for you to teach them.
Donât get me wrong: Cobberdogs are amazing. Iâm proud to be part of developing such a breed. But they donât arrive as fully polished adult dogs. With training, consistency, socialisation, manners, hard work and dedication, they will usually become divine adult dogs.
Then we forget the puppy stage ever happened.
Hereâs what I always say:
Expect the worst â the naughtiest, most spirited, crazyâfunny puppy.
If itâs better than that, youâll be happily surprised â and youâll also be prepared to deal with any issues.
Because puppies!!!!
WILL be PUPPIES!
They are little sponges, ready to learn. They need a firm but kind owner. Your cobber needs a balanced learning approach.
I could put the same puppy into two different families, and the outcomes might be completely different.
It comes down to: you. You will be the main shaper of a puppy
Our puppies parents have beautiful temperaments, so you have a great starting point â good genetics and lovely temperaments behind them.
The rest comes down to you and the environment.
So if youâre getting a Cobber now or in the future:
Make sure your expectations are realistic.
Commit to training, socialisation and structure.
Be ready to lead with consistency.
I canât promise calm puppies â but I can promise that with work these cheeky little guys can develop into the âWOWâ dog you dream of.
Because behind every amazing dog is an even more awesome owner.
