The feline mascot of the light cruiser HMAS Encounter, is shown here peering from the muzzle of a 6 inch gun β€” taken about 1916. Commissioned into the RAN on 1 July 1912, Encounter became Australia’s first cruiser. Over the next two years she was actively employed in training the growing Navy and showing the flag at ports all around the nation. On 4 October 1913 she joined with the remainder of the new Australian Fleet Unit.

Cats have been war ship passengers for hundreds of years and were considered to be good luck for a voyage. Navy cats were initially recruited for their mouse and rat catching abilities to protect food stores but they also had the essential role of raising morale. By WWI, cats and kittens were mascots of not only ships but infantry regiments and air force squadrons.

***** UPDATE!!***** 22 Cases now diagnosed in Mount Isa

ALERT: Canine Ehrlichiosis diagnosed locally in Mount Isa

MIVS has recently diagnosed a case of Ehrliciosis in a young dog in Mount Isa. We suspect this is a locally acquired case as the dog has not travelled to the NT, where this disease is now endemic. Ehrlichia canis is a bacteria that is spread by the bite of a Brown-dog Tick. If diagnosed and treated early it is curable, but prolonged disease results in death.
Dogs may show some of these more common signs:
- Fever
- lethargy/weakness
- loss of appetite
- weight loss
- bleeding from the nose or under the skin (damages platelets)
- conjunctivitis
- corneal oedema (blue eyes)
- Pale gums
- Breathing difficulties
- Enlarged lymph nodes

The best prevention is a Seresto tick collar. Seresto tick collars work by killing the tick before it has a chance to bite and transmit the bacteria. They are waterproof and provide four months of prevention.

Monthly Nexgard or three-monthly Bravecto are also recommended to be used in conjunction with the Seresto tick collar. These medications kill ticks once they have already bitten the dog, and help prevent other dogs from becoming infected.

Currently for dogs in Mount Isa, we recommend monthly Advocate Spot-on to prevent Spirocerca lupi (oesophageal worm), Heartworm, Intestinal worms and fleas, in conjunction with a Seresto tick collar. In cases where dogs are exposed to numerous ticks, the addition of Nexgard or Bravecto, is also recommended.

Ehrlichia is also a Zoonotic disease. People cannot catch the bacteria directly from dogs, but can be infected (although rare) by the bite of an infected tick.

Dear Valued Clients

Since the closure of Copper City Vet Clinic, Dr Kate (NWVC) and Dr Gillian (MIVS) are the only veterinarians servicing the Mount Isa area. Dr Kate is the only Equine vet.

Kate and Gillian already work extended hours at their respective clinics, as well as providing an afterhours service. The closure of Copper City has put extreme pressure on the staff at both clinics.

Currently, appointments for routine surgeries at both clinics are booked out at least a month in advance. Emergencies of course are seen to immediately. On any day patients are triaged with the very ill seen to first which often results in larger wait times or reshuffling of appointments is necessary. We apologise for this inconvenience.

As neither clinic has been able to secure a Veterinarian, and for the sake of their own mental health, and to avoid burn-out, Kate and Gillian have banded together to enable them to take some time out.

From 1 February NWVC and MIVS will rotate weekends. From Friday night to Monday morning, only one clinic will be open for emergencies and a Saturday clinic by appointment. Mount Isa Veterinary Surgery will operate on the 1st and 3rd weekend of each month and North West Vet Clinic will operate on the 2nd an 4th weekend of each month. In an emergency telephone your regular vet and you will be directed to which clinic is on call.

Thank you for your understanding at this trying time. Our aim is to provide the best care for your pets.

Dr Katelyn – North West Vet Clinic
Dr Gillian – Mount Isa Veterinary Surgery
