Equine Sanctuary for Neglected, Abandoned & Abused Horses. WINDAMERE HORSE HAVEN Association Inc is a horse rescue charity which was established in 2013.

Its aim is to help save abused, neglected and abandoned horses and to try and give them a second chance at life through rehabilitation and re-education in a caring environment, with a view to rehoming to a forever home. As part of their rehabilitation and care, Windamere horses are provided with individualised supplementary feeding, and farrier, dental and routine vet care and also equine massage/

bodywork as needed. Once we have helped a horse recover to full health and it has undergone a retraining program with our horse trainer, we will try and find a suitable adoptive home. We attempt to match horse and prospective owners and offer ongoing support. Windamere Horse Haven is mainly funded by donations or ongoing sponsorship which can be for as little as $10 per week. Individual donations/sponsorship as well as those from businesses are very much appreciated. Even having a donation box on a sales counter can help fund the horses in our care. Sponsors will receive a letter of introduction to Windamere as well as regular periodic newsletters. Donations and sponsorship over $2.00 is tax deductable. Picasso and Petra had some mowing duties today - it has taken a long time for Picasso to trust people but with the ongoing work by our trainer Bruce, he can now be haltered, groomed, led and the start of having his feet trimmed.

Despite the drought we always have green grass around the septic soak, so we make it worth the horses while to be caught and handled - its yummy to do so!

🌈🌈A very sad day today with Beau going over the rainbow bridge. 🌈🌈

One of Windamere's first rescues over a decade ago, he had come back to us a few months ago.

Unfortunately he had complications from a recent health issue and despite the best vet care, we were unable to resolve his medical issues so we made the hard decision to say goodbye to this lovely pony.

What a difference six months makes in the life of a rescue horse.

Happy and Sunny have been transformed - back to a healthy weight, scoped and treated for gastric ulcers, dewormed (Happy holds our record for highest worm burden ever at 8850!), teeth done, feet done and progressing well with their handling and trust in humans.

Anzac is starting work now his hoof rehab is nearly complete.

He is still very green but we hope he will make a lovely trail riding horse in the future.

🐴🐴 Available for adoption - Copper 🐴🐴

Copper is an approximately 15yo Welsh X gelding who came to us as part of a deceased estate at the start of 2023.

He is very friendly and easy going for a pony who has had minimal humans in his life until his arrival here.

He is 13.3hh tall with the funniest moustache and a thick lush tail.

An easy keeper, he can be on grass but like most ponies needs to have his intake limited so he doesn’t get too round. He does well on meadow hay.

Copper has his hooves trimmed, he can be a little unsure with his hinds sometimes. He is up to date with his vaccination and dental as well.

Easily caught in a yard, he can be caught with a carrot in the paddock.

Candy went off to Equus Veterinary Services last week to have a 5 day course of sand clear.

She is so small that she fit under the chest bar of the float, so she was barricaded in with hay which she didn’t mind one bit.

During her stay she set to work ensuring the day yards edging was maintained in tip top shape!

A big week for Picasso with his many many hours of trust building all coming together finally.

He has been introduced to the halter, had his feet handled and had his first hoof trim since arrival, and possibly in his life.

He is making excellent progress

Do you have a few hours a week free?

Windamere is seeking reliable volunteers to help with the care of horses and sorting of donated goods in preparation for fundraising sales.

We have volunteer groups on Tuesday Thursday and Friday, with a particular need for volunteers on a Friday. We are located in Mt Torrens in the Adelaide Hills.

You don’t need to be horsey - just be committed to helping horses in need in a fun, friendly atmosphere.

Duties vary - manure collection, grooming and socializing horses for those who like the outdoors. For those who prefer a less physical task, washing horse rugs, cleaning tack and sorting donations are indoors.

Today our volunteers started building the new paddock shelters, with posts for two in.

We are building four new shelters, each 6m x 3m. It will allow us to keep hay out of the rain in winter and give more horses the option of a run in shelter vs trees.

They look huge but will be cut down to size to allow for slope of the land.

Little Candy was not feeling well today and was rushed to the vet for an emergency assessment.

She has had pain relief and fluids, and xrays of her abdomen where a large sand burden was located. She will need further treatment to try to clear the sand out.

She is now back at our property and on colic watch - cross fingers she makes a full recovery!

Busy week for Sunny and Happy this week with more handling and introduction to the saddle and girth.

We hope to have these two under saddle in the coming months. Initially we just want them used to the human being up there instead of down there, and getting used to the feel of tack.

Pebbles - the return

Pebbles is one of the iron knob deceased estate horses. She has been off at a holiday with our trainer Bruce to handle her and get her used to humans. Not long ago she would bite, strike and kick anyone who came near her. She is still timid but has definitely figured out humans aren’t all that bad!
