Windamere Horse Haven

Windamere Horse Haven Equine Sanctuary for Neglected, Abandoned & Abused Horses. WINDAMERE HORSE HAVEN Association Inc is a horse rescue charity which was established in 2013.

Its aim is to help save abused, neglected and abandoned horses and to try and give them a second chance at life through rehabilitation and re-education in a caring environment, with a view to rehoming to a forever home. As part of their rehabilitation and care, Windamere horses are provided with individualised supplementary feeding, and farrier, dental and routine vet care and also equine massage/

bodywork as needed. Once we have helped a horse recover to full health and it has undergone a retraining program with our horse trainer, we will try and find a suitable adoptive home. We attempt to match horse and prospective owners and offer ongoing support. Windamere Horse Haven is mainly funded by donations or ongoing sponsorship which can be for as little as $10 per week. Individual donations/sponsorship as well as those from businesses are very much appreciated. Even having a donation box on a sales counter can help fund the horses in our care. Sponsors will receive a letter of introduction to Windamere as well as regular periodic newsletters. Donations and sponsorship over $2.00 is tax deductable. If you would like to donate/sponsor or have a donation box on your sales counter, would like to know more, or want to download a sponsorship form please visit our website www.windamerehorsehaven.com , or email us at [email protected]

Welcome to Windamere, Bob & Jerry.

They are two senior ponies who were fending for themselves and roaming in an agricultural area in the northern suburbs of Adelaide.

With the current cost of hay and cost of living crisis we were at full capacity, but when we were contacted about their situation we knew we had to help them.

As they were roaming freely across paddocks and roads, catching them was not easy. With the help of equine rescue colleagues Kerry and Caroline, and other volunteers, it took a couple of days of work to get them into a trap yard and we were then able to get them into the float for the drive home.

Both have severely overgrown hooves and are skittish - they will require handling before they can be attended to with xrays if needed. Bob is a stallion and will need assessment to confirm if he can be gelded succesfully as an older pony - this can be complicated.

With funds incredibly tight we would welcome any donations to help with their rehabilitation - Bob and Jerry look forward to their new lives.

Belated happy new year!

Things have not been very happy here of late, with two colics, a viral infection, gastric ulcers and a lacerated leg.

It has been a trying couple of weeks and not a great start to 2025. But such is horses - crossing fingers toes and hooves for quieter (and less expensive) weeks ahead!

Five years ago, almost to the hour, the Cudlee Creek fire wreaked havoc upon Windamere and many thousands of other properties in the Adelaide Hills.

On that day we lost nearly everything, but thankfully no horses. Others were not so lucky with a horrific loss of property, life and animals through the fire ground.

Thanks to our supporters we have rebuilt stronger than ever in the years since. We were determined to not let that disaster be the end.

It is important to never forget the past and how ferocious and indiscriminate nature can be, and on this day each year we remember those who lost far more than we did.

Picasso and Petra had some mowing duties today - it has taken a long time for Picasso to trust people but with the ongoing work by our trainer Bruce, he can now be haltered, groomed, led and the start of having his feet trimmed.

Despite the drought we always have green grass around the septic soak, so we make it worth the horses while to be caught and handled - its yummy to do so!

🌈🌈A very sad day today with Beau going over the rainbow bridge. 🌈🌈

One of Windamere's first rescues over a decade ago, he had come back to us a few months ago.

Unfortunately he had complications from a recent health issue and despite the best vet care, we were unable to resolve his medical issues so we made the hard decision to say goodbye to this lovely pony.

Any donations towards his vet bill (in excess of $3000) would be greatly appreciated in his memory at https://givenow.com.au/windamere . All donations above $2 are tax deductible.

What a difference six months makes in the life of a rescue horse.

Happy and Sunny have been transformed - back to a healthy weight, scoped and treated for gastric ulcers, dewormed (Happy holds our record for highest worm burden ever at 8850!), teeth done, feet done and progressing well with their handling and trust in humans.

🐴🐴 Available for adoption - Copper 🐴🐴

Copper is an approximately 15yo Welsh X gelding who came to us as part of a deceased estate at the start of 2023.

He is very friendly and easy going for a pony who has had minimal humans in his life until his arrival here.

He is 13.3hh tall with the funniest moustache and a thick lush tail.

An easy keeper, he can be on grass but like most ponies needs to have his intake limited so he doesn’t get too round. He does well on meadow hay.

Copper has his hooves trimmed, he can be a little unsure with his hinds sometimes. He is up to date with his vaccination and dental as well.

Easily caught in a yard, he can be caught with a carrot in the paddock.

Please message us if you want to find out more about this handsome boy. His adoption fee is $500

He’s not under saddle but a training package is available to start him through our trainer
