And that’s over and out for 2022 from me and my pretty awesome dental assistant Max. Thank you for all my amazing client’s patience in 2022, as I adapted to my new roll as business owning mummy. As of 2023 I have made the hard decision to reduce my travel area to about 1 hour radius of home (with a few exceptions of clients I have already serviced in 2022 with Max in tow). If I am no longer servicing your area I am more than happy to help point you in the direction of other amazing dental vets to help you and your horses. But for now I am signing out on all Facebook communication until Monday 9th Jan, so I can spend some quality time with Tynan and Max. If you have a query or concern about a patient I have treated recently or need to get in contact urgently please contact me on my mobile - 0447972287. I hope you all have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy new year!!!

As many of my beautiful clients already know…. Tynan and I welcomed our special boy Max to the world in late March (he kept us waiting). Thank you all for your understanding while I have taken some time away from the horses to enjoy my beautiful little man. l have booked a few appointments in a July but will not be making any more for now, until I figure out if Max likes being a dental assistant or not (and navigate the winter weather with a newborn). I have started a waiting list for clients wanting appointments but I can not guarantee when those appointments will be made- just got to see how Max goes. If you need help finding another dental vet to help you in the mean time feel free to message and I can point you in the direction of great dental vets in your region. Any clients with horses with suspected sarcoid a may want to consider getting in contact with the VCC- looks like a great trial to be apart of.

Does your horse have a sarcoid?

The VCC is part of an international treatment trial investigating the efficacy of tigilanol tiglate, a product already licensed in the US and Europe for treatment of small animal cancer patients. Entry to this trial will close in July 2022 so if you would like to participate or require more information just sent us a digital image of the tumour and we will contact you for further discussion ([email protected]).

Today I wore my TradeMutt shirt for my dental run... why?.... because it’s a Conversation Starter! If you haven’t heard of TradeMutt before look them up- a company who’s main aim is to increase the conversation about mental health.

Today some special friends of mine farewelled a fellow vet... their brother, brother in law and uncle. While I can not take away their sadness and pain, I can play my part in starting and continuing the conversation about mental health. If you are struggling with your mental health do not be ashamed! Please please reach out for help. There are so many people rooting for you and would be so proud that you reached out for help. Confide in a friend or book an appointment with your GP or contact one of the funded helplines such as Beyond Blue, Lifeline, TIACS Founddation (a txt helpline created by TradeMutt). Just do something! This Easter long weekend- if you have a friend you haven’t talked to in a while or a friend with known Mental Health issues- given them a call to say hi- Open the line for a conversation. Stay safe everyone and have a fantastic long weekend resting and recharging.

Cool tooth of the day! Today I had the pleasure of completing a routine dental on a lovely 10 year old Stock horse gelding. On my initial incisor examination I found that this sweet boy had suffered from a traumatic fracture to one of his incisors (silly me forgot to take a photo of the tooth prior to extraction). He is a tough boy as the owners had not noticed any issues with his mouth and he was a tad chubby. This is actually one tooth- not two! It has split right down the middle. I am sharing this photo as it is a lovely cross section of an incisor and shows the pulp cavity that runs down the tooth from the occlusal surface (the top) down to the root- in this photo the pulp is black because it is full of feed and dirt! This pulp cavity normal contains the pulp of the tooth which is basically the heart and brain of the tooth. It contains vital structures including nerves, the blood supply and odontoblasts (cells that produce dentin which protects the pulp cavity).

To my beautiful clients. I don’t normally share GoFund me pages but obviously this is close to my heart. For you who do not know but my amazing cousin William was one of the two Australians on the Cattle Ship that sunk 12 days ago in the South China Sea. There is strong evidence that it was very possible that Will and the rest of the 39 crew missing were getting into life rafts as the ship capsized. This GoFundMe has been set up by Williams (my cousins) family and friends to fund a private search mission for William and the other 39 men missing who are still lost at sea. If anyone can forgo a coffee or two this week and spare a few dollars we would so appreciate the help. The donation doesn’t need to be big- but the more people we get to donate- the more we will have to assist with the search efforts. Thankyou to those who can donate.

Always lovely to have nice big sheds to work under when there are forecasts for storms! Cyrus was an amazing boy for his first 2 year old dental. He walked straight on the crush without a worry in the world and was so relaxed. He is a credit to his young handler who has been doing a lot of work with him while home schooling (after she finishes all her normal school work of course 😉). Awesome work Zoe!!

And for a Non COVID19 post! Over the last week I have seen a lot more Bot Fly activity! So it is a good time to remember to worm to help control your bots. The tracts on this mares tongue are a result of bot fly larval migration. I also often find pesky bot fly larve at the edges of your horses teeth between the tooth and the hard palate (roof of their mouth).

To my beautiful clients- I hope you are all spending some time at home with your loved ones (two and four legged).

With the serious nature of COVID 19 I felt I should make a post to clarify how I will be practicing for the foreseeable future.

At present I will be continue to practice with additional social distancing practices and hygiene practices implemented. I feel that the care of may patients is very important on welfare grounds, however I do not want to contribute to the spread of this horrid virus which has impacted such a large number of people wether through sickness or job loss and financial stress.

So please help me to keep practicing and caring for your animals.

1. If you are unwell or have had contact with a suspected or confirmed COVID 19 case please call to rescedual your appointment! There will be no penalty for late cancellations if for this reason.
2. Please help me to practice social distancing during your appointment. You will still be able to look in your horses mouth but I will step aside at this time- no looking over my shoulder.
3. I will be washing my hands at the stand and end of my appointment and wearing gloves which is normal procedure for me.
Please do the same. Wash your hands. Wash your hands. Wash your hands.
4. Unfortunately I will not be able to see horses with known behaviour issues at this time. As we know the hospital systems are likely to be stretched in the coming weeks to months and I do not want to add to that.
5. I am still available for dog and puppy vaccination and microchipping. However social distancing and hygiene is extremely important and I will require all vaccination appointments to be contacted out side in a secure front or back yard.

Other than seeing my patients I will be STAYING AT HOME. I hope my clients are doing the same.

Emma

Thinking of all my lovely clients at this hard time. I Appologies if I am hard to contact over the next few days. Our property is only 15-20km from the Dunn’s Rd Fire and our power went out yesterday and have no phone reception at home today. We are all safe and property is not at threat but just lacking some communication for now. I will put it on here too- any my local clients that need advice or help- called me on 0447972287. I will do my best to get back to people when I get into reception (got to drive 20km down the road at present). If you have been effected by the fire make sure to make contact with your local LLS vet too, they are your link to help with government assistance and forage assistance. Stay safe everyone

UPDATE- just got home and we have power and phone back- awesome work essential energy! Power back within a 24hr period is a great effort. I should be ore contactable now so if any Clients need me let me know

Another cutie from last month! 70kg miniature donkey filly! It was her first dental and she was super well behaved. Despite only being 18 months old she had significant ulceration down her gums from sharp enamel points on her upper molars. Hopefully with a more comfortable mouth she will continue to grow and thrive!

So I have been abit slack in my posts lately but I have a few saved up that I have been meaning to show you! Who knows what these little Buggers are?! Bot fly larvae! I removed them from the teeth/gum margins of a lovely Clyde who had been wormed in the last month. He was re wormed after his dental to kill any remaining larve and any that he would have swollowed and would have ended up in his stomach! This is a reminder of how important worming is during autumn to control bot fly larvae!
