Summer in WA: It’s Spider Season!
As the temperatures rise in Western Australia, so does the activity of our eight-legged neighbors! Summer is prime time for spiders, as they come out to hunt, build webs, and sometimes find their way into our homes.
Here’s what you need to know about WA’s summer spiders and how to live harmoniously with them:
🌿 Common Summer Visitors: Expect to see orb-weavers spinning their intricate webs, huntsmen on the move, and maybe even a redback in hidden corners. Most of these spiders are harmless and play an important role in keeping insect populations in check.
🏠 Spider-Proof Your Home: Keep windows and doors screened, seal cracks, and clear out webs regularly. Remember to shake out shoes, clothes, and towels left outdoors.
🌎 Spiders Are Essential: They’re nature’s pest control, feeding on flies, mosquitoes, and other bugs. If you spot one, consider gently relocating it rather than reaching for the spray.
🚨 Safety First: While most spiders are harmless, a bite from a redback or other venomous species will generally require medical attention. If bitten, seek advice from a doctor or hospital immediately.
✨ Fun Fact: WA is home to some of the most unique spiders, like the stunning coastal peacock spider.
Spiders are a natural part of our environment and help keep our ecosystems balanced.
