It's important to keep the older dogs fit to slow down the effects of ageing.

On July 6th, 2020, Dr. Chris Zink, a sports medicine veterinary specialist and a person I greatly admire, wrote a piece titled โ€œStop Taking Your Dog for a Walk.โ€ You can imagine that got my attention, since I had recently written a post about the importance of, uh, taking your dog for a walk. If you never bother your dog while it eats, it will have no reason to guard its bowl.

If you donโ€™t want your dog to guard itโ€™s bowl then donโ€™t test its patience every meal time. Donโ€™t put your hand in and take their bowl because you want to prove a point! The dog will quickly learn youโ€™re being a do**he.

At meal time, either leave them alone to enjoy their meal or build positive associations of you being around them by providing something extra nice each time your hand goes near.

That way, that one random time you might need to take your dogs food bowl away... your dog simply doesnโ€™t care. Heโ€™s confused, and going to be wondering why... but isnโ€™t pi**ed off and going to be far less likely to lash out.

I'm always talking about habit stacking to make dog training part of your everyday routine. It's consistent effort that will get you the results you want. This post explains what habit stacking is.

Crate training with Loke (left) and Archie. Crate training is generally a good idea, it allows for easy separation of dogs if you have more than one, a convenient place to put them away when you need them out of the way, and if they ever need to stay at the vet they will feel safe in the crate. But also, the crate can be used as a training tool to teach new behaviours, to solidify existing behaviours, teach great self-control, and for distraction work. In Archie and Loke's case we are working on some doggy conflicts related to guarding as well as general manners and obedience.

A lot of dog owners think that messing with their dog's food while they eat will help prevent guarding issues, but in fact the opposite is true. The more you bother a dog while they eat the more they feel a need to guard their food, while if they're always left alone to eat they will have no reason to guard.

Puppy training with Duke. He's going to be a big dog so his owner wanted to get started with obedience and manners training early. Manners are important for all dogs, but especially giant breeds as any behavioral issues or lack of manners are so much more noticeable. And I promise Duke wasn't as sad about it as he looks in the picture ๐Ÿ˜‚

Working to fix some tension that is happening between Zeus and the other dog in his household. Both are sweet dogs who get along well most of the time, and we are working on fixing some triggers which have caused some issues.
