Georgia is always striving to further her skills and knowledge which means she is always studying 📖 as well as working! We're lucky to have someone who was born into the horse world - already having 20+ years of experience 🐎🙏

Happy Vet Nurse day! We couldn’t do what we do without you.

What should you expect when your mare is expecting? 🤰

Udder development usually occurs 4-6 weeks before foaling, with wax appearing on the end of the teats 24-72 hours before foaling. There are 3 normal foaling stages:

Stage 1- Your mare will be restless, which can be mistaken for colic, lifting her tail, pacing, circling. If this behaviour continues for more than 4 hours, call your vet.

Stage 2- begins when the ‘waters break’ and should last 15-30 minutes. Your mare will most likely lie down and the foal’s front hoof will appear, followed by the other front hoof, then the nose. This order is important - if you see a nose first call your vet for assistance immediately. If 30 minutes pass after the waters break and the foal is not born call your vet immediately.

Stage 3- is when the mare expels the placenta, usually 1-3 hours post-foaling. When this occurs, check to ensure the placenta is intact. There should be 1 hole and no signs of tears. If your mare hasn’t expelled her placenta after 6 hours call your vet.

👀 Things to watch out for after the foaling are-

The foal - stands within 1 hour and nurses within 2 hours.
Your mare - monitor her for colic as it is common after foaling, and ensure she is letting the foal nurse. 🍼

We also recommend a post foaling check at 24-36 hours to assess mare and foal health and foal IgG (antibody) status.

Foaling season is here!🐴

We offer and encourage mare and foal checks. It’s important to have your newborn foals IgG levels tested 24-48 hours after birth to ensure adequate colostrum intake has occurred. With an inadequate intake or poor quality colostrum the foal will have a poor immune system and may require a hyperimmune plasma transfusion to prevent serious infections.

Don’t hesitate to get into contact with us if you require IgG testing done.

Show us your newborn foals in the comments 🐴❤

A good explanation of options for dental care

Horse Dentistry – Know Your Options

When it comes to your horse’s dental care, you have choices — but it’s important to understand the differences.
Your horse’s mouth plays a huge role in their comfort, nutrition, and performance. Choosing the right professional ensures not only smoother dental work but also protects your horse’s overall health.
Talk to our team at GVEH if you’d like advice about what option is best for your horse.

“It was nothing difficult” — so why was it so expensive?
We hear this a lot — and it’s a fair question.
From the outside, a wound repair, a bandage, a blood test — may seem like “simple” procedures. But when a vet is called, what you’re actually paying for first and foremost is clinical judgment.
It’s not just about stitching a cut or wrapping a leg. It’s about assessing the whole picture:
– Is there a life threatening structure involved?
– Is that swelling infection or inflammation?
– Is this wound likely to break down or cause long-term damage?
– Is this just a cut… or a career-ending injury?
Vets train for many years and carry extensive knowledge so they can see what others might miss. When we attend a horse, even for “nothing difficult,” we bring:
✔️ Experience
✔️ Diagnostic reasoning
✔️ Emergency preparedness
✔️ Accountability
And yes, there’s also the gear: sterile instruments, sutures, bandages, sedation, and medications — all of which have increased in cost significantly in recent years.
If it were truly easy, most owners wouldn’t feel the need to call us. But we know you do — because you care about doing things right. So do we.
We don’t take trust — or invoices — lightly. What might seem routine to you might still carry risk to your horse. That’s why we’re there, and that’s why we charge accordingly.
