We, as a family, keep and breed domestic pet rats. Our own rats have brought so much joy to our lives and being a part of that for other families is something truly special. Our Ethics & Standards of care:
-We strive to provide the best for our rats and continue to learn and adapt to individual needs and requirements.
-We work to provide quality formulated food, balanced supplementary foods, fresh

produce, fresh clean water at all times. Medications, supplements and enrichment are provided as soon as required and to the benefit of each rat.
-Appropriate housing is provided in single gender groups, we use large secure cages and regularly clean and maintain all cages. (modified- well ventilated, secure tubs are utilized for maternity housing as well as "grow out" cages once kittens are 3weeks until 6/8weeks of age)
-Our colony cages are set up to meet all necessary needs required. We choose to set them up in a way that encourages natural behaviours and activities with plenty of enrichment opportunities.
-Safe out of cage areas are provided for play, exploration, socialization and extra handling for 1hr/per day. Safety and security of the rats is prioritized at all times.
-Quality of life and the health of our animals is paramount. Veterinary care is accessed ASAP if/when required. Medications, dietary changes and housing modifications are provided when needed. We are able to, and regularly do, consult with vets/fellow breeders and other valuable resources when making decisions. Our rats are much loved family pets first and foremost and we take great pride in how we care for these gorgeous animals. We selectively breed for pet health and temperament and have chosen to keep this to a small scale. We do not breed to supply, therefore litters may have a wait time.

A very difficult update: At this current point in time our rattery is closed.

Unfortunately last year I became unwell with cold/flu like symptoms and my condition rapidly progressed into something much more serious. Within days of a fever and general body aches beginning I was hospitalised and in isolation with a widespread rash, multiple organ failure, septic arthritis, unable to walk or stand independently... I was in severe septic shock. The CDC was notified and following my case, I was urgently transferred via ambulance to a different hospital and a team of infectious disease specialists transferred to meet me. They quickly began working tirelessly trying to keep me out of the ICU and ultimately trying to keep me alive.
After many days, blood tests, cultures, x-rays, a full body MRI and a lot of trialed medications I was able to be moved from isolation to a medical ward and slowly began to recover with a combination of very powerful antibiotics. It would be weeks/months before I was able to walk properly again, before my skin began to heal and scar, before my organ function started returning to a normal level, before they could test for permanent damage to my heart.
It would also take months following my discharge from the hospital for a final result to come back from a laboratory in Sydney.
The culture for Streptobacillus moniliformis had returned a positive result.
Streptobacillus moniliformis infection/ Streptobacillary Rat Bite Fever is something that is not well documented or recorded and late stage progression was often found in post mortem reports. I've consented for my case notes to be used/published by the infectious disease doctors at John Flynn and Tweed Hospital and am forever thankful for all that they did.
Cold or flu like symptoms, notable body aches and a maculopapular rash are possible warning signs that should not be ignored if you've been in contact with rats. A bite is not necessary despite the name 'Rat Bite Fever', while it is easily spread via a rat bite and medical attention should be sought for animal bites, any contact with wild or pet rodents carries a risk.
