Louie enjoying our Puppy Emotional Support Duckyโข; anything to make sure their experiences here are always positive, fun and loving. Your pet's comfort and happiness goes hand-in-hand with their health, so it means the world to us to be able to make tails wag and make routine healthcare nice for them!

PLEASE DON'T FEED WILD BABIES ๐
We know itโs temptingโyouโve found a tiny, helpless wild duckling, possum or sugar glider, and your first instinct is to feed it.
But this could actually kill them. ๐ญ
๐ Many orphaned wildlife are found in critical condition. Their bodies may be too cold or dehydrated to process food safely. Even water can be dangerous if their body temperature is too low.
๐ Baby animals have species-specific dietary needs. The wrong foodโor even the wrong feeding methodโcan cause serious harm, from digestive issues to lethal aspiration.
๐ The best thing you can do is provide a warm, dark, safe box, and call Tweed Valley Wildlife Carer's 24/7 Hotline 02 6672 4789 as soon as possible.
๐ข Resist the urge to feedโsaving a life starts with patience, knowledge and proper care. ๐ฆ๐จ๐ฆ
PS: you can hear these little ones peep in the audio if you need a little sunshine in your day (with bonus commentary from our locum Dr Nadine, who loves our wildlife wing!)
What happens when I leave my dog at the Vet's for their neutering appointment? Nurse Taila sneaks in a snuggle! We found this little gem of Arlo in the archives! ๐
This little sugar glider joey was keen for a play after dinner! โพ
What a special moment to share with this little one - it was heartwarming to see him regain his energy after making sure he was warm and fed. ๐ผ๐งฃ
Did you know:
๐ญ Joeys stay in their mother's pouch until they are 70-74 days old and wean themselves around 4 months of age
๐ญ A sugar glider litter averages 2 joeys
๐ญ They can glid the length of a football field (105 metres) or about 7 busses long!
๐ญ Males have a bald spot on their head that is actually a scent gland.
๐ญ They have opposable thumbs, like us!
๐ญTo communicate with each other, they vocalise and leave scent marks!
They truly are amazing creatures and we are so lucky to have Tweed Valley Wildlife Carers and lovely members of the public looking out for them!
Rockabye Baby ๐ถ
Maple gets a complimentary snuggle from Dr Africa for her Spey appointment - and of course tries to sneak in a smooch! ๐๐ถ
We're lucky to have a wonderful team, allowing us to give each patient our full attentionโand even sneak in some extra cuddles to help them feel safe and comforted during their procedures. ๐
Spoonbill Chick Checkup
A little Spoonbill chick getting much-needed care from Dr. Sophie! ๐ฅ๐ฆข
Weโre so lucky to have Dr. Sophie Moles on our teamโa talented and dedicated wildlife vet who also works with our friends at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary.
Sheโs not just amazing with wildlifeโDr. Sophie is also a fantastic small animal vet, known for her sweet words of affirmation to her patients, and her love of coffee! โ๐
When your patient has eye boogies but prioritises playtime (sound on for purrrrrrrrrs) ๐
Dear Pets, Happy Holidays from our family to yours! Thank you for an amazing 2024; you and your families fill our hearts and we're so grateful for you!๐๐๐
Please stay safe for the Holidays, we hear Santa has a list. That means:
๐ No eating fatty foods (that ham is not worth the pancreatitis, sorry!)
๐ The tree and decor are not for parkour
๐บ Ask for non-toxic bouquets (cats, please stay away from Lillies!)
๐ซ Have guests and family put purses, bins and bags out of reach - we know the temptation of eating toys, bones, choccy, sugar-free lollies, and other naughty things is especially strong when everyone is having a good time and distracted, but that emergency trip to the Vet's is not how you and your family want to be spending your holidays!
We'll be closed on December 25th & 26th, and January 01st; but our friends at AES Carrara will be open for any Holiday emergencies. ๐
Please stay safe, have fun, and send us pictures of your silly Holiday costumes! โค
Some good news for your Sunday! โ
In a world first, veterinary scientists at Universitรฉ de Montrรฉal have found a way to scan the brains of cats while theyโre awake, using electrodes concealed under specially knitted wool caps.
When being tested for chronic pain from common conditions like osteoarthritis, awake cats tend to shake off and chew the wired electrodes placed on their heads to produce electroencephalograms (EEGs).
To prevent that, cats are normally sedated through the procedure, which affects results.
Now, in a study published in the Journal of Neuroscience Methods, researchers led by รric Troncy and Aude Castel of UdeMโs Groupe de recherche en pharmacologie animale du Quรฉbec report a new technique to keep the electrodes in place: by placing them in crocheted beanies.
And how cute are those pompoms? ๐๐ฑ
It always makes us so happy whenever we can make pets just that bit more comfortable, whether it be in consult or when we are studying them to help improve their lives. ๐
