🐎Do you have a new foal on the way❓
👉Organising a foal health check, within the first 24-48hrs, is a must for all of your new four legged babies!
❓So what do we do at a neonatal foal check to ensure that you have a healthy foal?
👉Perform A Blood Test – We perform a blood test to determine the foal’s levels of IgG antibodies. This step is especially important as it helps us to determine that the foal has received adequate immunity from its dam in the form of colostrum. If the IgG levels in the blood are inadequate, the foal may not have enough immunity to prevent potentially fatal infections. We also perform an SAA test, which may indicate abnormal inflammation or infection.
👉Physical Exam – We perform a thorough physical exam of the foal. We check its demeanour, heart, vital signs, nursing behavior and examine for the presence of any congenital abnormalities or signs of infection
👉 Check the Umbilicus – We thoroughly examine the umbilicus (navel) for any heat, moisture, swelling or enlargement.
👉 Check Meconium has passed – We check that the foal has passed faeces, particularly meconium (the foals first faeces: dark, brown firm faecal balls). All meconium should be passed within 24 hours of birth. Meconium impaction occurs when the foal is unable to pass all of its meconium and it needs to be treated appropriately.
👉Check for normal urination – We also check that the foal is urinating normally. We also check there is no urine leaking from their umbilicus.
👉Check Ribs & Overall Conformation – We examine the foal for any potential rib fractures that may have been sustained during birth and look at the foals overall conformation, including any leg issues that may need addressing quickly or managing (ie – contractions, weaknesses).
👉 Don't forget mum!!
We also do a thorough check on your mare, to ensure she's come through the foaling process just as well as her baby!

🐎Foaling Season is here 🥰
❓Do you know the signs your mare will show when she's close to foaling?
👉 There are 3 stages to foaling
🐴Stage 1
In the preparation phase, the mare becomes nervous and uneasy and will lie down and get up frequently. The tail will twitch. Sweating, urination and signs of mild colic are common. Stage 1 lasts for 2–3 hours and terminates with the "breaking of water" when 7-20 litres of uterine fluids are released.
🐴Stage 2
In the active parturition stage, the mare's cervix dilates and uterine contractions increase. The feet and nose of the foal are forced into the pelvis and eventually the amniotic sac and encased feet are seen protruding from the vulva. The mare is usually lying down and the contractions normally expel the foal in 15 minutes. The mare will generally remain lying to allow the blood from the umbilical cord to pass to the foal.
🐴Stage 3
The final stage involves the expulsion of placental membranes. The placenta is usually passed within 15 minutes to one hour. Draft mares may take longer. Should the mare retain the placenta for four hours, consult your veterinarian promptly
⭐Mares do not read the text book! So not every mare will show all the signs listed.
⭐It is very important to watch your mare closely when she's nearing her due date and if you're at all concerned, call us immediately!
