Bella Appreciation Post ❤️

Big thank you 🙏 to , Lauren and Dave for their assistance with the purchase and initial training of our newest recruit Bella. She has hit the ground running here in SA, already pulling her weight whether it be truffle hunting or other detection work.

Bella is a gorgeous dog with an infectious personality and a large appetite to hunt, quickly ensuring her place as a vital cog in our team. She even gets along with Ted!

We are very happy to have her onboard here and can’t wait to see her continue to develop in the detection space.

and better keep an eye on her, she’s coming for their jobs 😂🦮

The dirty nose season is well and truly back, and Ruby has hit the season running . In near perfect truffle hunting conditions was a pleasure watching this girl following her nose and inhaling her body weight in dirt.

Season 2024 is almost upon us and we are very excited to introduce our newest team member, Bella! She is the sweetest of girls and comes to us with some scent work already inbuilt in her. We are very confident that she can complement our growing team and add great value to the local South Australian Truffle industry and her other scent work. Most importantly Ruby has already given her tick of approval. ✅

We were very honoured to guest speak at the Australian Truffle Industry Association National conference held today in our home town of Adelaide. We were privileged to speak about our experiences as handlers within the local industry as well as conduct a short training session with Ted the Cocker Spaniel. Thankyou to all the participants for their wonderful questions, as well as a big thanks to the for the opportunity.

It’s with great pleasure that we announce the start of a new direction and re-branding for Adelaide Hills Truffle Dogs.
We started this little side hustle over 5 years ago after reading a non-descript article in The Advertiser and thought this is something that we could do. Not knowing how far or how long it would last, and with a quick trip to Manjimup to learn from some of the best, we now service over 20 truffieres and have met some amazing people. As they say from little things big things can grow.

Naturally the new direction still involves the wonderful world of dogs and their incredible sense of smell. Whilst truffles are still our winter time pursuit, we are training and providing a scent detection service for any type of work. Basically if it has an odour, we are utilising our 30 plus years of scent detection work to train our growing pack to find it.

So we proudly and formally introduce Detection Dogs SA Pty Ltd.

The off-truffle season training continues with some new and unexpected skills being added to Ted’s detection CV. Whilst enjoying an early morning beach walk, Ted decided to chase down and catch a squid that was swimming in the shallows. Not sure if truffle and calamari are a classic cuisine match, however willing to try.

Truffle Season 2023 is officially over! An enjoyable, fun and at times exhausting season has come to an end for Ruby, Gus, Trainee Ted and of course Warren and I.

The highlights this season were finding the first truffles in Mount Gambier and Kangaroo Island, training our newest member Ted (the terror 😉), enjoying hunting with the public at our truffle tours in Myponga, observing the Barossa really start to take off and of course catching up with old (and new) truffle industry friends!

Whilst every time we hunt we enjoy it, we did experience some tough moments this season with the weather most weeks being miserable and difficult to hunt in, us having to hunt solo due to regular work commitments and an untimely eye injury (**warning see last photo if you’re not squimish**) and Dean’s ute finally giving up!

It’s time for the dogs and us to catch our breath and rest before we sit down and plan for next season.

Please keep a close eye on our socials as there will be upcoming news in terms of the rebranding of “Adelaide Hills Truffle Dogs” and training the next generation of furry truffle hunters in SA.

Truffle Dog update: the last few weeks have been a blur for us, starting with an incredible hunt in Mount Gambier where we were blown away by the quality and quantity of the truffles in the South East. We are currently in the thick of the season, with no signs of it slowing down, even with the recent but short lived warm weather.

As we head into the final straight of the best season we have had had the pleasure of hunting in so far, a quick reminder when harvesting, after removing the marked truffle, have a bit more of a feel and/or dig around as we have found that quite a few truffles are growing in clusters this season. Ruby and Gus have even found a few in old holes! I think the record this year was by Ruby, finding eight truffles in a cluster!

We’re ready for the final madness the last few weeks of the season generally brings…I think 🤪

To Ruby, truffling is a simple process of she finds them, she gets rewarded, she finds another, more reward, repeat. She makes it quite known that unless she is paid each time, then I can find them myself.

The week that was!
and had a huge week last week, starting with our annual trip to beautiful Kangaroo Island where the dogs found the first ever home grown KI truffles. It was a great moment sharing it with a farmer Enzo!

The rest of the week we stayed fairly local around the Hills and continued to hunt and find some ripping truffles with the most amazing odours.

A fantastic week was had by all, hunting in some sunny (and more importantly) dry weather.

This week should be a beauty with some nice frosts coming ❄️❄️❄️

Warren and I would like to introduce our new truffle hunting trainee Ted!

Ted is the newest member of our family here at Adelaide Hills Truffle Dogs and he is already having an impact, keeping Ruby and Gus on their toes when he’s around.

A huge thank you to who thought Ted’s strengths would be more suited to the truffle hunting industry.

Wow the first month of truffle season 2023 in SA was fun…and very wet. Most hunts have been wet, muddy and miserable…for Warren and Dean, but for Ruby and Gus, heaven! Even in this poor weather the dogs have not missed a beat, finding plenty of beautiful ripe truffles for their farmers. Ruby and Gus thrived in the at times terrible weather, demonstrating how far they have come since the start of their truffle hunting journeys.

With the best two months of truffle hunting still to come coupled with predicted better weather conditions, we are gearing up for a ripper season!

A very enjoyable hunt today at one of our smallest trufferies. Absolutely amazing quality truffles coming from about 20 small trees.

The old saying that size doesn’t matter rings true at this beautiful location!

SEASON 2023 has commenced!! Wet dogs, wet handlers, and muddy noses in what was an unseasonably early season winters day. Both Gus and Ruby (pictured here not at all impressed) didn’t miss a beat despite the conditions. Signs looking promising to be another great season.

This year our friends are hosting truffle hunts at their beautiful farm in Myponga, where and will be in their element, searching for black truffle in the crisp morning air.
