⭐ 𝙀𝙢𝙞𝙡𝙮 𝘾𝙝𝙖𝙥𝙢𝙖𝙣 & 𝙋𝙧𝙚𝙘𝙞𝙤𝙪𝙨 𝙏𝙤𝙮 ⭐

Emily, 26, and Jaffa, a 9yo gelding, are from South East Victoria. Emily began working with western horses around three years ago and in doing so has gained a passion for finding training techniques that highlight a horse’s natural ability and athleticism in a working environment. This is where her passion for Ranch Riding and Ranch Trail events has stemmed from as she is a firm believer that these types of classes provide a space for all-rounder horses to shine!

Emily & Jaffa have been a combination for the last three and a half years, and Emily couldn’t have asked for a more honest first horse to learn to train and compete on. Jaffa has always been willing to learn whatever is thrown in his direction, whether that be cattle work, reining, obstacle racing or liberty. He has been a privilege to work with ad the reason she wants to pursue coaching other riders and their horses in the Versatility Ranch Horse discipline.

Together their biggest achievements to date so far have been taking out the State Champion Intermediate Horse Ranch Trail and Reserve State Champion Intermediate Horse Ranch Riding titles at the 2024 RHAA Victorian State Show. They also won State Champion All Age Ranch Trail and Reserve State Champion Novice Horse Ranch Riding at the 2023 Victorian State Quarter Horse Championships!

Emily is extremely grateful that RHAA has provided her with this opportunity and she is looking forward to being involved in showcasing what Ranch horses can do alongside the other amazing competitors.

What does it really mean to train ‘𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐞?’

This topic was brought up during our last mentorship call inside the 𝘉𝘦 𝘠𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘉𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘔𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘱, and our good friend, Nate Horner couldn’t have summed this topic up any better:

“I have a sign in my barn that says: '𝐑𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮’𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐧, 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞.’

It reminds me that, when you train for the horse, you can’t focus on where you think you 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 be — you have to focus on what that horse needs from you 𝐭𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐲.

A lot of times, we look at horses to give us something — like that dopamine rush from a horse understanding our cues. But, we can’t look at it that way. I’ve had to get to the place where I think “what am I offering to the horse to make it a good deal for 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦?”

When you’re not selfishly looking for a result, it changes your mindset to be truly ‘for the horse.’”

Horses need horsemen. It's that simple. I get asked the same questions over and over again and nobody gets it. What level rider is this horse suitable for? I'll tell you, the best one she can get, the best horseman that's willing to buy her. The horse will only ever be as good as the rider. It doesn't matter if it's trained to jump hoops of fire, you're gonna bring it down to your level in no time. Your kid doesn't need a $15,000 horse if they haven't already had $15,000 worth of lessons. You can't buy a violin that will gift you the skill of playing. It's the same for horses. There is no magic horse, only a love for the animal, and a commitment to learning.

Most of you are so unfair and demanding of the horse you miss the forest for the trees. "I want a horse that rides out alone!!" well guess what, you better be ready to spend a year developing that relationship, that bond, that trust, she's not a bike, you can't buy trust.

"I want a horse that can sit and be the same after time off" well friend, this is a commitment to a relationship, not a classic car you take out of the garage twice a year. You can't buy what your looking for.

"I want a horse my kids can ride" you better be ready to teach your kids how to be horseman, because if the horse has to do it, you'll likely see the inside of an ambulance, or a morgue.

You can't buy trust, you cannot buy what comes with building a relationship with an animal over years of dedication.

We are not people who have never failed, but people who never quit.

Great words of advice:

One of my all-time favorite pics, "The Savage" and the story behind it. Horse on the left was in the lead, the horse on the right was closing in the gap and starting to pass. Instead of the horse on the left putting forth more effort into gaining and keeping the lead, he reaches over and bites the horse on the right. Meanwhile, the horse on the right has his ears laid back and his eye on the prize. Moral of the story... Never entertain foolishness. Have a purpose in life, stay focused and never let others bring you down. Winners are not people who never fail, but rather people who never quit. There‘s an old saying: a champion is someone who is willing to be uncomfortable & rock bottom has built more champions than privilege has. It's about hard work and the drive to do it. Determination to keep pushing forward when others would love to see you fail. Winning isn't the score on the board, it's seeing something through to the end and congratulating your opponent. If you win through bad sportsmanship there is no real victory.
