Throughout autumn, communities may observe smoke from permit burns that happen as part of agricultural practices to prepare the land for next season.

The CFS works closely with councils and landholders to assess local fuel loads and weather conditions. Once a permit is granted, landholders must follow stringent conditions and precautions, and it is expected that they will monitor the fire after it is extinguished for flare-ups or reignitions.

If you observe any smoke followed by flames or thick smoke plumes, please call Triple Zero (000) immediately.

For detailed information regarding fire season dates and permit burns, please visit the CFS website 👉 https://ow.ly/cUAH50Vs1zH

Over the last few days, smoke from the Victorian Fires has drifted into SA due to southerly winds, initially keeping the smoke up in the River/Murraylands and Mid North.
As the winds are forecast to change to an almost easterly tonight, that smoke is predicted to work its way down into our region.

That smoke is predicted to cover most of the Limestone Coast, with a significantly higher concentration predicted around Bordertown and Keith from early morning. The smoke may also reach as far as the Eastern Eyre Peninsula.

The SA Country Fire Service is reminding the community to only call 000 if you observe any smoke followed by flames or thick smoke plumes.

Smoke is hazardous to your health. To minimise impacts, close all windows and doors and limit time spent outdoors. If there is a break in smoky conditions, open your windows and air out your home. Anyone with asthma or respiratory conditions should follow their personal action plan. If you start to feel symptoms from smoke exposure, seek medical attention as early as possible.

Smoke can also reduce visibility on roads, take care when required and drive to conditions.

We will continue to monitor this situation, and provide updates when necessary.
