**PREGNANCY TOXAEMIA IN SHEEP**
It’s been a very tough start to the season, and coming into lambing we are seeing an increase in the number of pregnancy toxaemia cases seen in sheep flocks around the district. Here’s what you need to know about this disease and what you can do to prevent and treat it:

Pregnancy toxaemia is an energy deficiency disorder that occurs during late pregnancy, when insufficient energy is provided to ewes. Predisposing factors include:
• Older ewes (5+ years)
• Merinos are more commonly affected
• Twin and triplet bearing pregnancies
• Higher body condition leading into a period of reduced feed amount/quality
• Poor body condition (starvation ketosis)

Clinical signs include:
• Staggering/incoordination
• Lethargy and isolation
• Recumbency (down ewes)
• Other neurological signs, including blindness and stargazing
• This condition can present like vitamin B1 deficiency, however this is less likely due to current seasonal conditions

Treatment of this condition involves supplying the animals with energy, and neutralising the ketones in the bloodstream. This can be achieved with subcutaneous administration of “4-in-1 Flow-pack” products and oral administration of propylene glycol (Ketol). Additionally, inducing lambing should also be considered to take the strain off the ewe.

Prevention strategies in the longer term for this condition involve the following:
• Testing supplement feeds to ensure you know how much you need to feed to meet energy requirements
• Scanning and separating single-bearing and multiple-bearing ewes for more tailored feed management

Please feel free to call and get in touch with our experienced large animal vets if you have any questions regarding this condition and your flock’s level of risk.

PRODUCER DAY SUCCESS
Yesterday we ran our first producer day: Managing macromineral and energy disorders in pregnant and lactating sheep and cattle. We spent the morning educating producers on the disorders we see during this period (grass tetany, milk fever and ketosis) and strategies they could implement to prevent them on farm. We hope they will be able to use this information to develop control strategies as we approach the end of calving season and start of lambing season. Thank you to all the producers that attended, Adam Hancock from Elders, the Naracoorte Racing Club Inc. for hosting us and Hutchisons Nursery for the delicious food.

🐾📣COMMUNITY FEEDBACK INVITED ON COUNCIL'S DRAFT 2024-2029 DOG & CAT MANAGEMENT PLAN 💬🐾

Following a review of the previous five-year plan Council invites you to have your say on Naracoorte Lucindale Council's draft 2024-2029 Dog & Cat Management Plan.

The Plan needs to be reviewed every 5 years under the Dog and Cat Management Act 1995.

Council's draft 2024-2029 Dog & Cat Management Plan has been reviewed by the Dog and Cat Management Board which is satisfied that it meets legislative requirements.

The Plan outlines how Council will manage dogs and cats as required by the Dog and Cat Management Act in the following ways:

1. Encouraging responsible dog and cat ownership;
2. Ensuring public safety by reducing public and environmental nuisance caused by dogs;
3. Effectively managing dogs by meeting all legislative requirements;
4. Community education, including promoting compulsory desexing of dogs and cats;
5. The management of wandering dogs and cats;
6. Ensuring Council delivers effective and efficient dog and cat management services.

Council's current position is that it does not manage cats due to the complexities involved with the control, housing and rehoming of cats. However, Council is still required to capture cats within the Plan.

📆Feedback is invited on the draft 2024-2029 Dog & Cat Management Plan from Tuesday 2 April until COB on Tuesday 23 April 2024.

Pending feedback, the draft Plan will then be endorsed by Council for implementation.

📌You can read through the draft plan and provide your feedback on Council's YourSay platform here: https://yoursay.naracoortelucindale.sa.gov.au/draft-dog-cat-management-plan-released-for-comment

Last week, one of our nurse’s dogs chewed up an oxygen absorber sachet that was included in a pack of sandwich wraps.
She was shocked to learn that the sachet contained iron granules.
The granules are magnetic which allowed her to confirm that they are, in fact, iron.
Iron is potentially toxic to our furbabies, and immediate veterinary attention is recommended.
Rachael’s dog is just fine after bringing up her breakfast. As it turned out, she hadn’t swallowed any, just delighted in sprinkling iron dust around the kitchen and giving her mum a huge fright!
