**Warning: Patient under anaesthetic**

Patch was in today for a COHAT (this is a complete oral health assessment & treatment) 🦷

As you can see, Patch has moderate calculus and gingivitis present. After thorough investigation (charting & x-rays) and treatment (scale & polish), we have reversed his dental disease (yay 🀩)

As he has a normal amount of bone supporting his teeth (see x-ray), he does not have periodontitis which was a real concern given the amount of tartar present and also for his age (great news for Patch and his amaaaazing owners πŸ₯°)

This shows that what you can see on the outside does not necessarily correlate to what is happening inside and under the gums!

Learning when to stop the mastiff way.

12/08/2024

Unrealistic expectations can lead to disappointment for everyone involved. While dogs are cherished members of our families, it's important to remember that they are not human and perceive the world differently. Each year, around 200 scientific papers are published on canine mental abilities. The general consensus is that dogs typically possess the mental capacity of a three-year-old child. By adjusting your expectations accordingly, you can help ensure your beloved pet's behavioural success. πŸΎπŸ’“

July is and with some not so purr-fect facts circulating we’ve gathered the most common myths and debunked them.

🐾 Myth 1: Pets should have one litter before being desexed

Fact: There’s no evidence to support this! In fact, having a litter can pose risks like pregnancy complications and birthing difficulties. Desexing before their second heat can nearly eliminate the risk of mammary cancer.

Chickens have some pretty clever ways of beating the winter chill, but they may still need your help. Like all birds, chickens use their feathers for insulation by fluffing them up and trapping the air. But for the times when nature is hard to predict, good pet care involves providing appropriate refuge.

❄️Insulation❄️
In cold parts of Australia, you could insulate your chicken coop with tree branches, cardboard, or straw. Care should be taken if hay or straw is used for insulation, as these can become infested with mold and vermin and carry chicken parasites. Also, remember to keep the insulation tidy. Keeping the coop clean and dry is essential as most bacteria, fungi, and parasites thrive in warm, moist environments.

β˜€οΈWarmer climatesβ˜€οΈ
If you live in one of the warmer Australian states then you probably won’t need to install insulation in your chicken coop at all. Open, ventilated coops are more important. Learn more tips on coop setup on our website, or alternatively, visit your local Greencross Vets for expert advice.

Winter is here! We feel it's going to be a super cold one, and chances are if you are feeling cold your furry friend is too.

Here are some ways to keep your pet warm in the Winter:

πŸ’šKeep your pet inside
πŸ’šProvide a warm, soft, elevated bed
πŸ’šWarm coats are great for pets that are senior, small or have thin coats
πŸ’šMove your guinea pigs hutch inside the house or garage
πŸ’šProvide extra straw and hay so small pets can burrow and hide
πŸ’šKeep all bedding dry
πŸ’šWrap a loose blanket over your pet, but don’t tuck them in. They still need to be able to move away from it if they overheat
πŸ’šWalk your furry friend during the day when it’s not as cold

🚨 Attention Pet Owners! 🚨

Emergency and Specialty Vets are sounding the alarm about the rise in paralysis ticks affecting our pets. 🐾 With the unseasonal warmth lingering into autumn and rain, the conditions are ripe for these dangerous pests.
At Animal Referral Hospital (ARH) Gosford, several beloved pets have tragically lost their lives due to severe tick paralysis. Dr. Natashia Evans, an Emergency and Critical Care Specialist at ARH Gosford, emphasises the importance of year-round parasite prevention, even as we transition into winter.

Skipping prevention can lead to devastating consequences.
Even a delay of just one or two days can put your pet at risk. Set reminders, and if in doubt, administer prevention a couple of days early.

Pet owners are urged to perform daily tick checks, as early detection can save lives.

For emergency assistance, contact your nearest animal hospital: https://www.emergencyvet.com.au/contact-us.html

22/04/2024

πŸ’š As winter sets in and the temperature drops, vets often see an increase in arthritis cases in both young and old animals. Sadly, the majority of these pets go undiagnosed and untreated as their owners don’t understand the reality of this condition. However, pets experience real pain with arthritis, comparable to the pain experienced by humans with this disease.

πŸ’š Early detection and proactive treatment are essential to ensure your pet’s comfort and quality of life as they age.

πŸ’š If you would like to know more, contact your local Greencross Vets for more information.

Practice Ethos

We believe the best way to look after animals requires three individuals, at a minimum, to be working together for the common goal of optimal health and longevity for that animal; in our case, a loved pet. They are a vet, the patient and the care giver. These three, all getting along and helping each other, allows the best outcomes with the minimum of upset. We strive to listen, learn, examine and test, to find out as much as we can about each individual patient, so we can discuss the best options available to care givers and help them decide on which course of action we should to take. We clearly aim to help provide a happy, pain and stress free life for our patients, by advocating wellness, prevention, early diagnosis and intervention, whether it be for their physical or mental health, or both.
