The Nest Tip #15

Protecting our furry friends should be a top priority for all pet owners.

Fleas and ticks might seem small, but their impact on our pets can be huge.

Leaving fleas and ticks untreated can have serious consequences for our beloved pets.

These tiny parasites might start as a nuisance, but they can quickly escalate into major health issues. Fleas can cause intense itching, leading to skin irritations and allergies. They can also transmit tapeworms and other diseases. Ticks, on the other hand, are vectors for diseases like Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, and more, which can lead to joint pain, fever and organ damage. Paralysis ticks release a paralysing toxin which can cause major respiratory problems as well as heart failure.

It's essential to take proactive measures to prevent and address infestations to ensure our furry companions live healthy, happy lives with regular check-ups, preventive treatments, and proper grooming.

Losing a pet can be an incredibly difficult and emotional experience, and it's important to take the time to properly cope with your feelings of grief and loss. Here are some tips for coping with pet loss:

Allow yourself to grieve: It's natural to feel sad, angry, or even numb after losing a pet. Don't be afraid to express your emotions and take the time you need to grieve.

Seek support: Talk to friends, family members, or support groups who understand what you're going through. It can be helpful to share stories and memories of your pet with others who loved them too.

Create a memorial: Consider creating a special tribute to your pet, whether it's a scrapbook, photo album, or memorial garden. This can help you remember and honor your pet's life.

Take care of yourself: It's important to prioritise self-care during the grieving process. Eat well, exercise, and get plenty of rest. Engaging in activities you enjoy can also help distract from your loss.

Know when to seek professional help: If you're struggling to cope with your pet loss or are experiencing symptoms of depression or anxiety, it may be helpful to seek professional help from a counsellor or therapist.

Remember that everyone grieves differently, and there's no "right" way to cope with pet loss. It's important to take the time you need to properly mourn the loss of your beloved pet.

The Nest Tip #14

Travelling with your pet can be an enriching and fun experience for both you and your pet. Here are some handy tips to ensure the trip goes smoothly for everyone:

🐾 Book a visit from your vet: Before planning your trip, make sure to see a vet to ensure your pet is healthy and up-to-date on all vaccinations. Get a copy of your pet’s medical records to bring with you on the trip.

🐾 Do your research: Research the places you will be visiting to make sure they are pet-friendly. Look for hotels, restaurants, parks, and other attractions that welcome pets.

🐾 Pack for your pet: Bring all the essentials your pet needs, such as food, water, treats, toys, medication, and bedding. Also, don’t forget to bring a leash, collar, and identification tags for your pet.

🐾 Prepare for the journey: If you’re travelling by car, make sure to secure your pet with a harness or a crate. Make regular stops to give your pet the chance to stretch their legs and use the bathroom. For air travel, make sure to check with the airline about their pet policies and requirements.

🐾 Be considerate of others: Not everyone loves pets, so be respectful of others’ space and comfort. Keep your pet on a leash and under control at all times, and clean up after them.

🐾 Consider your pet’s comfort: Travel can be stressful for pets, so make sure to give them plenty of attention and comfort along the way. Bring their favourite toys or blankets to help them feel more at home.

At The Nest Mobile Vets we can assist your pet in the comfort of their own home for any travel pre-travel requirements.

The Nest Tip #13

As a pet owner, ensuring the safety and well-being of your furry companion tops your list of priorities. One of the most reliable ways of keeping your pet safe and secure is by microchipping. A microchip is a tiny device implanted under your pet's skin that carries a unique identification code. If your pet wanders off or gets lost, animal shelters, rescue organizations, and veterinary clinics scan the chip to find your contact information and reunite you with your pet. Some benefits include:

🐾 Quick and easy identification
🐾 Increased chance of pet recovery
🐾 Hassle-free process
🐾 Cost effective
🐾 Safety net. Identification tags on collars can be removed, microchips can’t.

In NSW, you can be fined up to $880 if your pet isn’t microchipped and up to $5,500 for a pet who isn’t microchipped and declared restricted or dangerous.

If your pet isn’t microchipped, call us today to book in an in-home consultation.

08/05/2023

Ear infections are a prevalent issue amongst pets, especially dogs. They occur when microorganisms such as bacteria or yeast invade the ear canal and cause inflammation, leading to painful and smelly symptoms.

Common causes include allergies, moisture, foreign objects, and hormonal imbalances, with certain breeds being more prone due to their floppy ears.

Symptoms vary but include scratching, discharge, swelling, foul smells, and, in severe cases, balance issues or seizures. Prompt veterinary attention, including cleaning and medication, can prevent complications and recurrence, while keeping the ears clean, dry, and free from exposure to damp or dirty environments, can reduce the risk of infection.

To keep pets healthy and avoid ear infections, owners should be vigilant, take preventive measures, and seek veterinary care if needed. Regular cleaning, avoiding damp or dirty areas, using ear-friendly products, and regular veterinary check-ups can help identify and address any potential problems. By taking these steps, owners can help their pets stay happy and healthy, free from painful ear infections.

The Nest Tip #12

Skin allergies or dermatitis are common in pets like cats and dogs where their skin becomes inflamed, itchy, and irritated. Skin allergies in pets can be caused due to various reasons, including plants, fleas, and food or environmental allergens such as moulds, pollen, or dust.

Some common symptoms of pet skin allergies include:

🐾Itchy skin
🐾Redness or inflammation
🐾Scratching or chewing at the skin
🐾Hair loss or patches of missing fur
🐾Skin infections
🐾Rubbing their faces or ears against surfaces

To treat skin allergies in pets, talk to your veterinarian to determine the cause of the allergy and develop a treatment plan. Treatment may include topical or oral medications, allergy shots, or dietary changes. Additionally, regular grooming and flea preventatives can help reduce itching and irritation in pets with skin allergies.

If your pet is having these issues call us today on 0402220928 or via our website (www.thenestmobilevets.com.au) for an in-home consultation and plan for your pet.

The Nest Tip #11

Here are some handy tips to keeping your indoor cat happy and healthy:

🐾 Provide balanced and healthy meals: Giving your cat proper nutrition is essential for their overall health. Feed them high-quality cat food, which should be rich in protein, vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids.

🐾 Regular veterinary check-ups: Regular check-ups with a veterinarian can help you keep tabs on your cat's health and prevent any potential health problems.

🐾 Regular playtime and exercise: Indoor cats may not get as much exercise as outdoor cats, so it's crucial to provide them with plenty of toys and interactive playtime.

🐾 Proper grooming: Grooming your cat regularly can help prevent hairballs and other health issues. Brush your cat's coat, clip their nails, and clean their ears and teeth regularly.

🐾 Provide a comfortable living environment: Give your indoor cat plenty of bedding, a comfortable place to rest, and a clean litter box.

🐾 Ensure plenty of clean water: Always fill your cat's water bowl with clean, fresh water to keep them hydrated and healthy.

🐾 Keep them mentally stimulated: Lots of indoor cats can become bored, which can lead to destructive behaviour. Provide your cat with plenty of toys, puzzles, and things to keep their mind engaged.

🐾 Keep your home clean: A clean home will help keep your indoor cat healthy, so be sure to clean up regularly and keep their living environment clean and hygienic.

The Nest Tip #9

Pet insurance can be valuable in helping cover unexpected veterinary costs, especially for emergency care or surgeries. It can also provide peace of mind knowing that your pet has coverage in case of any accidents or illnesses. However, there are several factors to consider when deciding if pet insurance is worth it:

🐾Research different policies to ensure that you're selecting one that fits your budget and your pet's needs.

🐾 Consider your pet's age, lifestyle, and health. Younger pets may benefit more from having insurance coverage than older pets that may have developed various health issues. Similarly, if your pet participates in sports or has an active lifestyle, the risk of injuries might be higher, making pet insurance more worthwhile.

Ultimately, the decision to purchase pet insurance depends on your budget, pet's health status, and lifestyle. It's essential to research different policies thoroughly and consult with veterinarians or insurance agents to determine if it's the right choice for you and your furry friend.

New Litter on the way? The Nest Mobile Vets can come to you for all their pre-adoption needs. From vaccines to worming, we are your go to in-home veterinarians.

If you have a new litter on the way or have new little paws running around the house there are some legal requirements you need to consider before re-homing them. We have created an easy go-to new puppy or kitten checklist.

Puppy and Kitten Vaccines
For kittens, they require an F3 vaccine before they are re-homed. This vaccine is the first of 3 vaccines which protects them against Feline Panleukopenia and Cat Flu (feline herpesvirus, and feline calicivirus). These vaccines are given 4 weeks apart from when they are a kitten (at 6-8, 10-12 and 14-16 weeks) followed by an annual vaccination.

For puppies, they require a C3 vaccine before they are re-homed. This vaccine is the first of 3 vaccines (1 x C3, followed by 2 x C5 vaccines 4 weeks apart starting from 6-8weeks old) which protects your pet against Canine distemper, Canine hepatitis, Canine parvovirus, Parainfluenza virus and Bordetella bronchiseptica.

Microchipping
For both cats and dogs, microchipping is a legal requirement in Australia. If your pet becomes lost or stolen they are easily identified using the microchip information registered in their state.
This is required before you re-home any pet Australia wide.

Worming
It is important to worm your kittens and puppies before they are rehomed for their own health and wellbeing. Your puppies and kittens can be wormed from 6 weeks old (please double check this information on the product insert when choosing the right wormer for your pet).
