Did you know that along with our gorgeous chickens, we also have a super cute Australian Native Stingless behive? Stingless bees produce very rare but high quality honey which has countless medicinal/antibacterial properties, is low GI (perfect for diabetics) but can fetch up to $400 per litre. Last year we harvested around 700 g of native honey for personal use and likely won't need to harvest again until next year after summer. Depending on our next harvest, we may start selling small jars of native honey to our locals. 🍯🐝

Our bees are so busy today in the warm weather!

For those who regularly buy our eggs, have you noticed how beautiful, rich and orange the egg yolks are? Egg yolk colour shows how well fed, healthy, happy, and taken care of our chickens are. All our girls enjoy a full day of sun and free ranging, a quality high protein layer pellet for their main food source, with worms and bugs from the ground and lots of fruits, veggies and sometimes lean meats through the week as snacks. We hope you love our eggs as much as we do. πŸ₯š

In saying that, it's Autumn already and egg production is slowly slowing down as daylight hours start to shorten. Instead of getting 5-6 eggs a day we are now getting between 2-4. We are still fulfilling orders and will do so until close to winter, however wait times may be a little longer than usual.

Hi everyone! Just a bit of info about our chickens leading up to Autumn and Winter.

All our chickens are Heritage breeds or heritage mixes. As such, they will usually reduce laying around Autumn when they start to go through their annual feather moult. All their energy goes into growing new feathers rather than growing eggs. Then as winter starts they will stop laying completely as there is not enough daylight hours to produce eggs (chickens need around 13 - 16 hours of daylight for egg laying!) and we do not use artificial light to stimulate ovulation. At the moment there is plenty of sunshine for our chickens so they are happily laying almost daily. I will update the page when egg production slows down in the coming months. But don't worry, there will still be plenty of funny chicken content on here.

Egg orders at the moment are pre-order only! There is about a 2-3 week wait so please let us know ahead of time if you need some eggs before a specific date. Thank you!

Get to know our chickens! Last but not least, we have Chicken 7, Martha. She is approximately 8 months old and is our little, lean Barnevelder. Martha lays a small darker brown speckly egg. She is our youngest flock member so is super spritely and quick and is one of the first to greet me at the gate in the morning. She regularly flaps wildly and tries to lift off the ground when she's super excited about something. Martha and Chewie are best friends so you will often see them walking around and grazing together. πŸ”

Get to know our chickens! Chicken 6 is Zosia (pronounced Zoh-sha), named after my great-grandmother, translated to Sofia in English. She is approximately 2 years 4 months old and is a gorgeous Coronation Sussex and lays a medium sized whitish egg. The Coronation Sussex breed was first bred/created in honour of King George's coronation. Zosia is the mother of the group, the most gentle, proper, lady-like chicken, who really acts like royalty. She eats one morsel at a time and never steals food. πŸ”

Get to know our chickens! Chicken 5 is Henrietta. She is approximately 2 years 4 months old and is a Rhode Island Red x Barnevelder and lays a small light brown egg. If you ever need proof that chickens are the closest relative to dinosaurs alive today, then Henrietta is it - she is our little Velociraptor. When Henrietta sees something interesting across the yard, she will put her head down and sprint SO FAST just like a Velociraptor. She's also a greedy little thing, stealing food right out of the other chickens' mouths. πŸ”

Get to know our chickens! Keeping with the Star Wars Theme, Chicken 4 is Chewbawkka (Chewie for short). She is approximately 8 months old and is a gorgeous Black Australorp. She is the squishiest and softest of the bunch and lays a medium size light brown speckly egg. Chewie is friendly, gentle, and has a weird funny prance when she's running towards food or is running to get away from something. πŸ”

Get to know our chickens! Chicken 3 is Hen Solo, the sister of Princess Layer. She is approximately 1 year 8 months old and is again a cross between an Araucana and a Cream Legbar. She is our little shadow because she follows us absolutely everywhere and loves to be picked up and patted! She is also our little double yolk champion, occasionally laying a monster blue double yolk egg (>100g), the most recent one being last night. πŸ”

Get to know our chickens! Chicken 2 is Princess Layer. She is approximately 1 year 8 months old. She is a cross between an Araucana and a Cream Legbar and is probably the smallest of the bunch but doesn't really get picked on. She lays a medium sized blue egg which is super popular with little kids! She is friendly but fiesty and will easily steal your sandwich if you eat lunch outside. πŸ”

Get to know our chickens! Chicken 1 is Attila the Hen. She is approximately 2 years and 3 months old. Attila is a gorgeous Blue Australorp who lays big light brown eggs. She loves all foods and is the top of the pecking order. She has a loud egg song and will sing loud before and after she lays her egg. She won 1st place in her breed at Maitland show a few years ago. πŸ”
