Parkour/Barkour with Miles 🐾🗻
We hope everyone is having a delightful weekend ☀️🌿🦔
Here’s some puppies for ya Monday to get you through the week!
Having Miles work for his dinner on the balance pod tonight #pawstrength 💪🏻🐶
HEAD TILTS 🙉 If you’re like me, and sometimes like to have conversations with your pets, you may have seen them respond to your chatter with super cute head tilts as if they’re trying to understand what you’re saying.
It is speculated that our dogs tilt their heads for a number of reasons; they’re moving their heads to position their outer ear to capture and detect sound better (hence perhaps the confused look to match). Some experts also think they do this to empathise with us. Dogs are amazing at reading our facial expressions and speech patterns, and they’ve learned over time that doing this cute behaviour leaves us laughing and smiling at them, so they do it more often. An article on Psychology Today states it could be down to a visual hindrance rather than auditory in that the dogs’ muzzle blocks their line of sight to our mouths (an important part of our face that dog’s pay a lot of attention to in order to get spoken and non spoken information from us). Put your fist in front of your nose and you can see how their muzzle might get in the way... then tilt your head to see how it can help 😉
Although there are a few different reasons why our dog’s do the head tilt, there’s no denying it’s adorable!
Hi gang! Things have been a little quiet on the page lately as I’m still settling into our new home here in Geelong. I thought I’d share a little ditty of one of the things Miles and I have been up to: nail trimming (or that’s the goal at least)!
Miles has pretty long nails. It’s not something I’m proud of, and admittedly, I wasn’t aware of the detrimental effects of long nails on dogs until not too long ago. Knowledge is power though and so for the last few weeks I’ve been working on desensitisation and counter conditioning exercises so we can get those nails nice and short to make his life a little more comfortable. I’ll be sure to keep you all updated.
Ps: I love the little “thump” sound as his paw lands in my palm. He’s a keen bean. 😬
Tell me in the comments what you’ve been working on with your dog. Big or small, I’d love to hear it. Happy training! 🐶
Oh boy am I happy to see this face 😍 Only for about 24 hours but it’s better than nothing!
Blink and you’ll miss Baxter! 🌪🐶
Loving working with Baxter. He’s a very smart goofball 🤪🐶
Anyone else get cute aggression when talking to their dogs? Had some exorcist voice come through there when praising Baxter for his awesome recall 🤭🤣
Restrained recall training with little “springs-for-paws” Oreo last week. I’m loving the rocket ship sound effects from “B” in this one! 😆🚀
We like to use this element of teaching recall (among others) as it is an awesome way to teach fast, enthusiastic recall. The aim is having our dogs come to us when we call them, first time every time! 🐶
I mean, are you KIDDING me???? 😩😍
Saffie this morning. What a star 💫
Harley girl showing me she CAN behave like the lovely lady she is, instead of pulling on the lead and barking when she hears other dogs behind a fence.
This was one of many great moments this afternoon with Harley and her Mum. We did however, see a change in her behaviour today- something that we’d never seen before (which was a lot of vocalisation on sight/sound of other dogs). All that means is, we adapt to what is in front of us and start working on desensitising Harley to the things that she finds stressful, and consistently teach her the right way to go about it.
Just gotta roll with the punches!
