New Year's Eve comes with fun, celebration and merriment, but it also comes with noise. Fireworks in particular make a lotΒ of noise, and are not always a happy time for our pets.
Fear and anxiety from loudΒ noises can cause excessive barking, licking and salivation, inappropriate elimination, destructive behaviours, and the need to escape, just to name a few.
Ensure your pet is safe, secure, and happy this new year's eve.
You can create a safe and quiet internal space in your house, spend time with your pet instead of going out, provide enriching toys and games, and look at products to help aid anxiety, such as Feliway, Adaptil or other aids.Β
Keep your pet safe and sound this new years eve, and always make certain that their microchip details are up to date.
We wish everyone a happy new years eve!

Teddy's New Mats
Teddy's New Mats Meet Teddy, the 5 year old Labrador, who was a bit unsteady on his feet when his house got some new flooring. This can happen on unfamiliar surfaces, and bring about hesitation to enter an area,a fear of falling, and a loss of grip on the surface. After a visit with Dr Paul McCathy, Teddy's mum and dad brought him his own walking mats, which made him feel safe and secure. A big thank you to Teddy's mum and dad for the great video!
That's One Relaxed Dog!

Mighty Mite - Leporacarus gibbus
Mighty Mite We captured a video down the microscope today of a species of Fur Mite, Leporacarus gibbus. This mite is found worldwide, commonly occurring on rabbits. It can live on rabbits without causing any clinic signs, even when large in numbers.

We are always getting a variety of wildlife in at BRVC. From injured possums and birds to this little guy, who fell out of his nest and wandered off. A kind human picked him up and brought him into us, where we cared for him until a wildlife carer came to do the wonderful job of rehabilitating to release back into the wild. Some fun facts! Finding a baby bird on the ground is something that elicits in most of us a desire to help. Every year in Spring a number of young tawny frogmouths are found on the ground by people passing by and handed in to vets. These birds 'fall' into two categories. 1. Little nestlings that look like balls of fluff. Their feathers are downy and they have not yet grown a tail. They have probably been blown out of the nest or fallen while being a bit too adventurous. On the ground they are defenceless. If the nest is visible and reachable the baby bird can be placed back in it, but usually the nest is high in the tree tops and the safest bet is to take the baby bird to a vet or bird carer. 2. Fledglings are young birds who are learning to fly under parental guidance but sometimes don't make it back to the nest. It is very likely that the parents are nearby and if you can place the bird on a tree branch where is is safe from predators, especially cats, the parent birds will usually continue their supervision and when the bird is capable it will resume its place in the nest. As tawnies are night birds the parents will not return to feed the fledgling till nightfall. So the ideal situation is for you or someone to monitor the situation and satisfy yourself that the family is re-united. If that doesn't happen and the young bird seems not to be coping, then handing it in to a vet is probably the best bet.
