**AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION** LOLA - 2 YEAR OLD MANX X

Say hello to Lola, a beautiful 2-year-old Manx/DSH dilute calico who’s looking for a special family to call her own! With her striking mix of soft, muted colors and unique short tail, Lola is a one-of-a-kind beauty both inside and out.

Lola is a sweet and loving lady. She’s known for her sweet head bops and gentle purring – there’s nothing she loves more than being close to her people and sharing moments of love. She’s also a big fan of snacks, and if you have a treat, she’ll be sure to let you know she’s ready for a little indulgence!

While Lola is a loving companion, she prefers to be the only pet in the household. She enjoys all the attention to herself and would thrive in a home where she can be your one and only feline friend. Road Safety for Pets: Keep Your Fur Family Safe and Avoid Fines!

When driving with your pet, safety should always come first—not just for you, but for your furry friend too. Here’s what you need to know about road rules in NSW to avoid fines and keep your pet safe:

NSW Road Rules for Pets:
- Unrestrained Pets = Fines: If your pet distracts you or prevents you from controlling the vehicle, fines can reach up to $422 (in a school zone), plus 3 demerit points.
- No Pets on Laps: It’s illegal and dangerous to drive with your pet on your lap.
- Proper Pet Restraint: Ensure your pet is safely secured in a carrier or harness while in the car.
- Dogs in Utes: Carrying an unrestrained dog in the back of a ute can result in fines of $500+.

What Happens if Your Pet Gets Hurt?
If your pet is injured while unrestrained, you could face fines of up to $5,500 and 6 months in jail under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act—not to mention the vet bills and stress of an injured pet.

Pet Transport Tips:
- Small Pets: Use a secure carrier or crate, strapped in with a seatbelt.
- Large Pets: Consider a pet harness and seatbelt system for added safety.
- Never Leave Pets in a Car: Never leave your pet unattended in a vehicle—especially on hot days.

Prepare for the Road:
- Pack essentials like water, food, your pet’s favourite toys, and medications.
- Research pet-friendly accommodations before you travel.

Keep your pets safe and travel responsibly!

Meet Reggie, the brave dachshund who was in for his castration today!
He made the most of it, earning plenty of cuddles—he even convinced Ari to hold him while she worked!

Reggie loved his enrichment toys, like his treat ball and mats, which helped keep him calm and engaged during recovery.

Well done, Reggie! We’re so glad he’s doing well.

UPDATE: Rosie has found a home! ❤️

Introducing Rosie,

This sweet girl is looking for her forever home.
She was rescued by one of our lovely clients after seeing a Facebook post about an abandoned cat. She was left hanging from a door handle outside our local takeaway, in the cold and dark.

Despite her tough start, she is a sweet and affectionate little lady who loves cuddles once she feels safe. She is also very playful.
Rosie can be a bit shy and does not do well in noisy environments, so she would not be suitable for a home with young children.

She has been around both cats and dogs and is fine with them

Rosie is litter-trained, up-to-date on her vaccinations and worming treatments, and is microchipped and desexed.

If you think you would give Rosie a loving home please contact us ☺️

Meet Maui and Billie, two adorable dachshunds who both underwent castration today.

Once they recovered from their anaesthesia, they found comfort in each other’s company while resting in recovery.

Our wonderful nurses kept a close eye on them to ensure they were comfortable and safe every step of the way.

Pup of the day.

River came in today for the amputation of his torn hind dew claw after an injury yesterday. He was given pain relief and bandaged up, then returned for the procedure today. River was a great patient, and he enjoyed having his emotional support sloth (a stuffed toy we lent him) to keep him calm during his stay.

Did you know? Dew claws are an extra digit on a dog’s paw, usually located higher up the leg. While they’re not used for walking, they can still get injured because they don’t make regular contact with the ground. This makes them more prone to getting caught or torn, especially if they snag on something during play or rough activity, like in River’s case.

We’re wishing River a smooth and speedy recovery.

This month at Cooks Hill Vet, we’re excited to introduce Milo, the sweet and brave 4-month-old Staffy cross who has quickly stolen our hearts.

Milo arrived at the start of November after either jumping or falling from a height, resulting in a swollen leg and a severe limp. A thorough physical exam and digital x-rays revealed that Milo had suffered a spiral fracture to his tibia. He was sent home with strong pain relief that evening and returned the following day for surgery. Dr. Darren performed the corrective procedure, realigning the bone, placing a pin, and securing it with wire.

Milo’s recovery journey will take time, which can be tough for a young pup (and his family), but with rest, medication, and plenty of love, we’re hopeful that he’ll make a full recovery.

Through it all, Milo has shown incredible bravery and resilience, and we’re so proud of this little trooper.

You’re our Hero of the Month, Milo!

TICK WARNING

Tick season is here in NSW, and it's vital to keep your furbabies safe! While ticks are generally most active from October to March, they pose a year-round threat. We've already seen several cases in our area.

The main concern is paralysis ticks (Ixodes holocyclus), which attach to pets, burrowing into the skin and feeding on blood while injecting toxic saliva. These ticks can be identified by their grey bodies and legs close to their heads, and they grow larger as they feed. Tick-borne diseases, such as Lyme disease, are also a concern, causing symptoms like rash, fever, headaches, and fatigue.

Signs of Tick Paralysis:
- Loss of coordination in the hind legs, which may progress to paralysis
- Change in bark/meow
- Retching, vomiting or loss of appetite
- Coughing
- Laboured or rapid breathing

While many cases can be treated by general vets, there's been an increase in pets needing care at emergency hospitals, which provide 24-hour monitoring for critical cases. Severe cases may require constant assistance with breathing due to the tick toxin.

Prevention is crucial, as treatment can cost thousands and recovery isn't guaranteed.

We offer these highly recommended flea and tick prevention options:
- Bravecto spot-on for cats - lasts 3 months
- Nexgard Spectra spot-on for cats - lasts 1 month
- Bravecto spot-on for dogs - lasts 6 months
- Bravecto chew for dogs (available monthly or every 3 months)
- Nexgard Spectra chew for dogs - lasts 1 month

More Helpful Tips:
- Check your pets daily, especially around their ears, neck, and legs.
- Avoid bushy areas, and consider clipping long-haired pets to make tick checks easier.

If you suspect your pet has a tick or shows signs of paralysis, call us immediately at (02) 4925 2999. For after-hours emergencies, contact the Animal Referral and Emergency Centre at (02) 4957 7106.

Stay vigilant and keep your pets safe!
