Paralysis Ticks are out in forces now that we are in the warmer months.
Having your dogs and cats on prevention is highly encouraged to prevent them being affected by the paralysis tick.

We encourage daily tick searches on top of preventatives like Nexgard, Nexgard Spectra and Bravecto.

Symptoms of tick paralysis can include:

- Change in sound of "bark"or "meow"
- retching
- weakness in hind legs
- if the tick is on the face they can develop facial paralysis
- unable to swollow.

Tick Paralysis is classed as an emergency as these symptoms can change in severity quite fast.

If you think your pet may have a tick and are not comfortable removing, please give us a call at the clinic to organise assisstence on 5497 6000
If there are any concerns outside our normal hours please do not hesitate to contact Pet ER North Lakes on 3384 2222.

Dear dog owners.

There have been reports of an outbreak of Canine Parvovirus in SE QLD.
These outbreaks are more severe during our wet season with floods that help to spread the virus in the environment.

Common symptoms include:
-Lethargy and weakness
- Severe bloody diarrhoea
- Fever
- Vomiting
- Loss of appetite

"In puppies aged between six weeks and six months, it can be fatal (the death rate in young non-vaccinated puppies can be greater than 80 percent), although early vaccination has been effective... Common signs of parvo-affected puppies include initial tiredness and not wanting to play. The next signs will include vomiting, followed by very foul smelling dysentery or diarrhoea." - Vet Voice, Australian Veterinary Association

If you notice any of these systems please reach out to your veterinarian for advise.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN to you all. We wish everyone a spooky night.

Some safety tips to remember:

Delicious treats 🍬 like lollies and chocolate are a big No No due to containing Xylitol which is an artificial sweetener.

Keep an eye on any decorations 🎃. Some pets may be tempted to chew and ingest parts leading to foreign items blocking the intestinal tract.

Trick or Treating 🍫 means the front door being opened many times. This can lead to pets sneaking out without being noticed. Ensure all microchip details are up to date and have their collars with ID tags attached.

Let's keep halloween safe for everyone, including our pets.

The Golden Oldies.

Meet Dodge:
Dodge is a member of one of our nurses families.
Dodge is a 12 year old maltese cross that has a few golden oldie issues, but with his joint, dental and cushings disease maintained he is living a happy fun filled life with his younger (and annoying) dog brother.

Did you know that our much loved pets can suffer from similar ailments as us humans?
Common issues in our aging pets are arthritis, loss of hearing, loss of sight and sometimes can show dementia like symptoms similar to humans.
It is up to us as their animal parents to notice these sometimes small changes and seek help from your veterinarian to ensure we are giving these golden oldies the support they definitely deserve.

If you have any questions or concerns about your fur baby, please do not hesitate to reach out to us on 5497 6000.

Kennel (Canine) Cough Spotlight

Kennel Cough has a few different names, but the most accurate is “Canine Cough” because it is not always spread within a kennel environment.

The infection can be spread by direct contact between dogs, by aerosol droplets in the air, or even by sharing of bowls or toys and can take up to a few days for the symptoms to start after being infected.

There are over a dozen different infectious agents that can cause Kennel Cough. Bacterial causes include Bordetella, Mycoplasma and Streptococcus. Viral causes include parainfluenza, adenovirus, herpes, distemper, reovirus, pneumovirus, picorna virus, bocavirus and coronavirus (not the COVID type!).

People often think their dog is choking on something when they have kennel cough. The most common symptoms are bouts of harsh, hacking coughing; often ending with a retch or gag. It can seem like something is stuck in their throat, but it is all just due to inflammation of the airways.

The severity of kennel cough symptoms depends as much upon the individual as upon the infection. Most healthy dogs remain bright and active with a normal appetite while they have kennel cough. Dogs who are young, old, stressed, or have other concurrent illnesses are much more likely to suffer severe disease and become systemically unwell.

If you think your dog may be infectious, this is highly contagious and it is highly recommended to keep your dog away from other dogs and seek medical advice.
