How adorable is Mr Bear!❤️

Bear is a regular patient here who has frequent dentals with us to stay on top of his dental heath. We think his favourite part is the snuggles after the procedure and being wrapped up in a warm cat bed to sleep the rest of the afternoon until his mum comes to collect him!

We understand that looking after your pets dental health can be an overwhelming prospect, that's why our nursing staff here at PETstock Vet in North lakes offer complimentary free dental checks to help you keep on top of your pets oral hygiene and create a best plan to keep their teeth and breath fresh.

Introducing Little miss Lana, our beautiful 4-year-old Domestic short hair❤️

Lana is looking for her new forever home (or even a possible foster career)

She was surrendered to us back in December due behaviour issues. She is very anxious when meeting new people and does take a little while to get comfortable and gain trust. However, since being on her behaviour medication and gain trust with all the nurses and vets she is the sweetest little cuddle bug.

Ideally, she does need a home with no young children or other cats. Small dog may be fine as long as it is a slow introduction. We believe she would be best suited to someone who has had previous or experience with behavioural cats.

We are asking for a small fee of $100 to cover the medication and food she has been on. We are also more than happy to do a 1-month trial

If you are interest, please feel free to call the clinic on (07) 3491 3135 or to email us on [email protected]

Here we have Dr. Kate, Dr. Sarah, Dr. Kelly and Dr. Candice. While these ladies do not make up our entire veterinary team, this photo is a little bit special as it marks a rare time where the four of them have worked together. Why is this significant? Well, they all started their veterinary science degrees at the University of Queensland together in 2010! It is almost unheard of that four vets from the same year get a chance to work together, let alone 12 years after starting their journey through vet school.
Sadly, Dr. Kate is moving to rural NSW in January but we are still very grateful that these amazing veterinarians have had a chance to collaborate! ❤️

LOW TO NO tick antiserum Australia wide

Australia is currently experiencing a shortage in the supply of tick-antiserum, while many clinics will have some in stock, these supplies are at risk of running out quickly.

This means if your furry family member gets a tick and isn’t on a preventive it will now be even more difficult for your vet to currently treat, this also includes your cats if they roam outside!
The best thing we can do for our pets to avoid even needing to see a vet for tick treatment is to make sure they are on a well-rounded preventative and to check your current preventive NOW to make sure it also covers paralysis ticks!

Steps that can be taken to keep your fur babies safer during this time:

--> giving your pets (including inside only cats) preventative - ensuring these preventives are given on time as the box recommends
--> check your pet daily for ticks
--> keeping your grass short
Unfortunately, we have already seen a few tick cases this year however if we follow the easy at home steps, we can keep our pets from experiencing life threating tick envenomation.

Even though we have low shortages of this treatment there is still ways we can help your pets. If you are concerned your pet has a tick (even if they are on prevention and you are worried) please give your local clinic a call.
if you have any questions regarding a flea and tick protocol for your pets you can always call your local vet clinic for advice.

Below are some examples of some flea and tick products you can find both in your local vet or pet shop, but also online:
Nexgard sprectra chews
Bravecto chews
Bravecto spot-on treatment for dogs
Bravecto spot-on treatment for cats

☀️Heat stroke☀️

With summer fast approaching and the weather warming up there are a few things to consider with our four legged friends. Warmer temperatures can lead to heat stroke in your pets. The 3 main risk factors associated with heatstroke are high humidity/temperature, airway disease and obesity. Heat stroke can occur due to exercising on a hot day, not having access to cool water/shade and unmaintend coat condition not allowing for proper temperature control. It is important to realise that heat stroke can still occur on days that we may not consider hot ourselves.

Signs/symptoms of heat stroke include increased respiratory rate (panting excessivly), possible change in gum colour, lethargic/disoreientated and collapsing.
This can very quickly become fatal if left untreated.

Prevention for heat stroke can be exercising your dog and dusk and dawn avoiding the heat of the day. Ensuring your pet always has access to the shade, plenty of fresh cold water and allowing pets that are more at risk (such as brachycephalic breeds and geriatrics) to be in air conditioning during in the days. sprinklers in the yard or a kids pool of water are also nice to have access to.

Other things to consider with this hot weather:
- The roads get very hot!! Walk them on the grass where possible to avoid burning their paw pads
- Do not allow them to drink alot of sea water. This can make them very sick and in severe cases can cause seizures and be fatal.

if you have any questions or concerns regarding heat stroke or how to look after your pets going into the summer please call your local vets 😊

Beautiful Harvey was in recently for a dental procedure which included a gingivoplasty. Some dogs breeds (e.g. Boxers, Mastiffs, Bulldogs and Cockers Spaniels) are prone to excessive proliferation of gum tissue, which is often secondary to periodontal disease (inflammation and infection of the gum and bone that surround the tooth, usually as a result of plaque and tartar). With Harvey, you could not see some of his teeth due to this excessive growth of gum!
A gingivoplasty is where this excess tissue is removed surgically under general anaesthesia in conjunction with a dental clean and polish. This procedure has several positive outcomes - alleviation of discomfort within the mouth, improved appearance, and eliminates deep pockets where food a debris can be caught (thereby increasing the risk of further disease). Following his procedure, Harvey will start on a dental preventative plan and we will be monitoring closely for any further recurrence of this proliferative tissue.

Concerned that your dog may have this condition? Book in for a FREE dental check with one of our lovely nurses! Your pets mouth will be assessed and a customised plan will be determined to guide you for the pet treatment options for your fur baby❤️

Is your Pet covered for Flea, tick and worming?

Little Leeroy is given a monthly chew of Nexgard Spectra which covers him for Fleas, Ticks and worming. ❤️

In their first year of life puppies undergo significant growth, as a result they can often outgrow the weight ranges on the Nexgard packs; for this reason we offer single-chew Nexgards to ensure the appropriate weight-range is available to keep up with a puppies rapid growth!

Nexgard Spectra is a tasty beef flavoured chew which covers your dog for a month. This chew covers your dogs for fleas, ticks, heartworm and all intestinal worms (Minus hydatid tapeworm. However, this parasite is only considered a risk if your pet has access to dead animal carcasses or Raw Offal.) Nexgard spectra is brilliant as it is a chewable tablet (meaning it cannot be washed, shaken or rubbed off).

❤️ Patient of the week ❤️-

Mr Rory

Rory takes his dental hygiene very seriously which is why he came in for a dental procedure today. Rory was classed as a grade 1 dental. A grade one dental procedure requires a nice and simple scale and polish with full mouth radiographs to ensure there are no nasty surprises hiding under the gum line we can't see.

Rory was a very brave boy for everything and was happy to have some nurse cuddles post operatively.

Enjoy your new smile Rory 😊

25/08/2022

Did you know that we offer free dental checks for all patients? Our dental check appointments take 10 minutes and are scheduled with one of our highly trained veterinary nurses. We will give you a detailed estimate which is valid for three months and will also discuss with you everything that is included in a dental procedure so that you feel comfortable and prepared prior to proceeding.

Furthermore, even geriatric patients who need a dental procedure can have them – age is not a risk factor for anaesthesia! Each patient has a thorough health check and blood test prior to a dental procedure which assesses their anaesthetic stability and if there are any underlying causes that truly are risk factors.

A great example of this is Frank – one of our long-term regular patients who we absolutely adore! Frank is a 15-year-old Pug who had a grade 2 dental with us recently and had three teeth removed. He has had several dental procedures over the years with us and has always recovered well – this has kept him free from pain and infection caused by dental disease. He had a very smooth anaesthetic and recovery with lots of cuddles afterward from one of our nurses Ellie. He has continued to recover well and was back to eating in no time (Frank has always loved his food)!

Old age is not an acceptable reason to allow a patient to live with pain and infection caused by dental disease. Contact us to book your free dental check today!

23/08/2022

This darling girl called Ruby came to us recently with a history of haematuria (blood in the urine). During her physical examination her bladder felt very abnormal, and the suspicion of bladder stones was confirmed with x-rays!

Some types of bladder stones can be dissolved with a special prescription urinary diet, whereas others cannot, and surgery is required. Ruby sadly did not respond to the diet and a cystotomy (surgical removal of bladder stones) was performed. Treatment of a urinary tract infection secondary to the stones was also initiated.

The stones themselves (of which there were many as you can see in the photo!) were sent to the US for further analysis which is a free service offered by the University of Minnesota. This will determine the type of stone we are dealing with and enable us to formulate a long-term prevention plan for Ruby.

She is now pain-free and doing extremely well – her owners report that she is so much happier!!! This is a great example of how haematuria should be investigated as there are so many possible causes for this in both dogs and cats.

Beautiful Scarlett recently gave birth to a whopping litter of 10 pups! Can you count the puppy spines and skulls on the x-rays? This beautiful girl has been to us from her own puppy vaccinations and general health checks over time through to pregnancy diagnosis and care. The pups have also been to us for health checks, vaccinations and microchipping before they go to their new homes! Services we offer throughout these life stages include:

General health checks

Vaccinations and guidance for preventative care

DNA tests for breed identification and disease testing

Pregnancy diagnosis, health checks and guidance for pregnant dog care

Guidance with whelping, lactation and puppy care

Free weight checks with nurses for pups and their mum

Litter vaccinations and microchipping

Last but not least, puppy and mumma dog CUDDLES!

We are so happy that Scarlett is comfortable in our care and we hope to continue seeing her throughout her life for many years to come. We might even be lucky enough to have some of her pups and new owners come to us - this happens surprisingly often!

Does your pet get stressed easily? Zylkene is a natural product which is designed to help cats and dogs manage stressful situations such as traveling, new pet/babies, moving house, loud noises and fireworks. Zylkene has casein in it, which is a protein in milk. This helps to promote the relaxation of puppies and kittens after feeding from their mother. This product is also great for blocked cats like Mr Tabbie Mctat. Tabbie has been on zylkene for 10 months and is a much more stress-free boy ❤️

Whilst uncommon, pets can sometimes have reactions to their vaccines. Unfortunately, after his previous vaccination Bernie the miniature schnauzer had a severe outbreak of hives (which he made a quick recovery from after a trip to the emergency vets).

To be on the safe side for his next lot of puppy vaccines, he stayed with us for the day so he could be monitored afterwards by our team. Thankfully, it looks like it was just a once-off reaction last time as he did not react at all today! Despite still being a baby he was on his best behaviour and definitely our patient of the day! He was a great lunch buddy for the nurses and loved modelling his backpack for us 🥺🥰
