BRACHYCEPHALIC SYNDROME 🐶

Here are some photos of Betty before and after a procedure called ala-vestibuloplasty. This is a newer surgical technique that is used to open up the nostrils and improve breathing.

Certain breeds of dogs are prone to difficult and obstructive breathing because of the shape of their head, muzzle and throat.

This same day Betty went on to have a tonsillectomy and H-pharyngoplasty to also make a difference to her breathing.

After both of these surgeries Betty has:

✨ Improved air flow
✨ Improved exercise tolerance
✨ Improved ability to thermoregulate
✨ Improved sleep
✨ Reduced loud breathing

⭐️MEET SALLY⭐️

Sally presented to our Jervis Bay Clinic recently after her owners caught her eating the batteries of a hearing aid!

Batteries contain an acidic material that can cause severe ulceration to exposed tissues and necrosis of the gastrointestinal tract.

Radiographs were able to identify that the batteries had made their way into Sally’s stomach. Sally was promptly taken to surgery where Dr Cynthia and Dr Mick were able to successfully locate and safely remove the batteries before they caused any serious damage to Sally.

After surgery and two days of close monitoring in hospital, Sally was discharged and has made a full recovery.

Here is Sally (and her support toy) with Dr Cynthia 🩷

This is our patient Alby - He recently had BOAS surgery 🐶

This is a recent surgery we performed on Alby’s nose surgery called Ala-vestibulolasty. This newer technique helps open the nostrils.

Alby also had a tonsillectomy and H-pharyngoplasty to change the shape and function of the soft palate around the area called the pharynx.

This surgery will help Alby tremendously!

BOAS Explained 👇

BOAS (Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome) refers to dogs that have skull bones that are shortened in length. This affects the anatomy of the soft tissue structures of their airways. Common breeds affected by BOAS include the English Bulldog, French Bulldog, Pug, Pekingese, and the Boston Terrier.

These dogs with BOAS have upper airway structural abnormalities that cause an increase in airway resistance, making it difficult to inhale.

Signs of BOAS:
• Noisy breathing
• Snorting and snoring
• Tire quickly with exercise
• Coughing, gagging, retching
• Vomiting

MEET DR SAM - Our Rehabilitation Guru!

So, Rehab WHAT IS IT?

Rehabilitation and physical therapy have long been used in the human medical fields to promote musculoskeletal health and injury recovery. We are now recognising that exercise programs and other manual treatments can also be beneficial for our pets. Rehabilitation is also an important part of maintaining general health in our pets from young pups through to golden oldies.
It includes interventions that are designed to optimise recovery in pets from surgeries, injuries, chronic conditions and improve overall health.

Dr Sam Singleton at North Nowra Veterinary Hospital provides her expertise in rehabilitation programs that assist dogs and cats during the recovery process.

Some conditions treated through rehabilitation include:

• Arthritis
• Cruciate surgeries
• Patellar luxation
• Meniscal injuries
• Spinal surgeries
• Elbow and hip dysplasia
• Shoulder instability
• Acute and chronic injuries

If you would like to discuss more about rehabilitation and how it could benefit the well-being of your pet please reach out to our team who will be happy to assist you further.

Sully has been a familiar face in our hospital since undergoing a TPLO procedure ten weeks ago and visiting us regularly during his rehabilitation. Sully visited us recently for his post operative radiographs to assess the progression of his healing and at the same time underwent a dental procedure. This dental procedure involved a thorough oral examination of his teeth and gums, and a scale & polish to make his teeth sparkle ✨ Sully’s dental nurses discussed with his owners what home care they can implement to keep his teeth in tip-top shape.

If you would like more information about dental care for your pet or would like to book a FREE dental check with our experienced nurses, you can call us on 02 4423 1688 or book online!

Lest we forget 🌹

Today we remember all those who lost their lives in service to their country in all wars.

Dogs were often used as messengers, companions, and military working animals.

Pigeons were crucial for communication and surveillance during WWI.

Horses and mules were used pull heavy artillery or other materials and also used as transportation and in cavalry units.

And so many other animals we thank you and pay our respects ❤️
