Myrtle’s Backed Up Booty… 💩

Myrtle is a very stunning hypomelanistic translucent leatherback bearded dragon, whom is owned by one of our exotic vet nurses.

Myrtle unfortunately hadn’t passed any faeces in 2 weeks and naturally being a vet nurse, her owner was getting worried, even after doing warm bath soaks 😥

So after a quick trip to work and a set of X-rays, Myrtle p**ped on her own in one of our reptile enclosures!
She probably heard Dr Harry talk of a warm saline e***a and decided she would prefer to just p**p much to her owners relief! 😅

As the cold sets in, reptiles metabolisms start to slow down so it is not uncommon for this problem to arise ❄️
To help your scaly friend pass their p**py problems, you can offer warm bath soaks, gentle belly massages and increase their veggie intake 🥗

If you need any assistance with reptile care, please contact us to make an appointment with one of our knowledgeable exotic vets! 💜🩺💙

Welcome to another “Meet the team at NRVH🐾”

This week we are shedding the limelight on one of our incredible vets, Jenny.

Dr Jen started with NRVH in 2023, however she has come to us with such a wealth of knowledge we just had to have her as part of our team!🤩

Known for being our in house ultrasonography superstar, she is the go to girl for all things ultrasound!
Jen is always keen to throw her hands into any and all surgery and enjoys seeing all your beautiful pets and her patients go home feeling 100/10!

She has a background in equine veterinary care so is also such an asset with our large animal patients/medicine.

We are so lucky to have Jen as a part of our NRVH family and look forward to many more years of her amazing work with us! 🥰

Tune in next week for another “Meet the team” 💜🩺💙

Bowser and The Tricky Toe..🐾

This is Bowser, he is a 2.5 year old dachshund who, whilst his owners were away and he was being looked after by a carer, decided to lose a toe…

Bowser’s carers came home to find him with not a worry in the world, but with a very injured toe. The cause of the injury to this day is still unknown, but Bowser was not concerned by it in the slightest 😟

Bowser presented to the clinic to see Dr Emily for an initial consult and it was determined after an X-ray that the injured toe required amputation ✂️

Dr Dylana successfully performed the surgery to remove the toe and Bowser was able to go home the same afternoon with a “cone of shame” to prevent him from licking his wound and of corse some pain relief, antibiotics and anti-inflammatories.

Bowser came back for his recheck recently and the wound is healing remarkably! 🤩

Well done to both vets involved and his carer for getting him seen straight away! 💜🩺💙

Our reproduction services aren’t just limited to small animals as we are slowly emerging into the world of large animal medicine 🐮

Dr Emily went out to one of our vet nurses properties at the start of the year to help them pregnancy test a few of their cows with our Alertys On Farm Pregnancy Snap Test.

This is done by taking a blood sample from each cow and applying it into the test window. The results appear after just a few minutes, like a COVID snap test.
Each cow needs to be at least 28 days post mating.

This cow was found to be pregnant on 2 tests and some months later calved a healthy calf! 🥰

We currently are only offering this type of pregnancy testing service for large animals.

If you have any livestock enquires, please phone our hospital 💜🩺💙

Welcome to another “Staff Pet Spotlight!🌟”

This segment we are shining a light on Maggie the 4 year old German Shorthaired Pointer whom is owned by one of our vet nurses, Leanne! 🐶

A few weeks ago they both competed in a bikejoring competition! 🚴🏽‍♀️
Bikejoring is a mix of dog sledding and biking but without the snow. It’s where a dog is harnessed and attached to a bike using s special bungee line and they run ahead while their owner rides.

It is a super fun workout for both you and your dog, very fast paced and a great bonding experience for those who have high energy dogs that love to pull.

Maggie and Leanne came away with 3rd place against some tough competition and both had an amazing time! 🤩

Tune in next time for another “Staff Pet Spotlight!” 💜🩺💙

If you have a rat that is lonely because he/she has lost their friend we have a lovely client of ours that is happy to either adopt your lone rat and give it an amazing home with the rest of her rat family or loan out one of her own rats to keep it company, providing she has one that suits 🥰

She has been breeding and showing rats for a number of years and is very well known in the rat world! 🐀

There will be conditions of course from this client if you take one of her rats as she only wants them to have the best of care continued while not with her and they must be returned to her if they outlive the rat it has been keeping company.

For first time rat owners:
🐾 It is important to always get at least two rats, ideally three rats is better for the dynamic but we understand that everyone’s situation is different.
Rats are incredibly social animals and must have a partner/friend.
🐾 Ideal age for pet rats is no less than 8 weeks of age, look for clear breathing, good fur and body condition and a friendly personality!
🐾 Checking genders is very important as they breed very easily so the same gendered rats is always a must if you don’t intend on breeding!
🐾 Always feed a good quality brand of food
🐾 Ensure you are providing a big enough cage/set up that allows ample space that encourages natural behaviours with suitable substrate like paper pellets, quality shavings or some padded bedding.
🐾 Lots of hides and enrichment activities to keep their smart little brains active
🐾 A good size water bottle or bowl
🐾 A great rodent savvy vet clinic - we know one 😉
🐾 Joining a club like NSW Fancy Rodent Society Inc is a great idea for making friends/mentors with other rat loving people!

If you would like us to put you in contact with this wonderful client, please phone the clinic on 02 4571 2042 today! 💜🩺💙

Welcome to another “Meet the team at NRVH🐾”

A NRVH veteran nurse is getting their well deserved time in the spotlight this week, Leanne! 🌟

Leanne started working as a vet nurse for Karen in 1997, then decided to have a change of scenery and get into equine nursing in 2004-2005.
She then went into a totally different field and went to university in 2006 to become a registered human nurse, in which she still is.

Leanne decided in 2023 that she couldn’t stay away from helping animals or our wonderful team and came back to NRVH to work along side Dr Michelle, as well as working as an RN!
This woman is a machine! 🤯

Leanne thoroughly enjoys surgery/anaesthesia, reproduction and dog behaviour/training. She also trains assistance dogs in her spare time.

These skills make Leanne a very valuable member of our team! Any time she is working & we are dealing with an aggressive or anxious dog, Leanne is our go to!

Leanne has been apart of the NRVH furniture for a long time and we can’t imagine the team without her! 🥰

Tune in next week for another “Meet the team” 💜🩺💙

Grace’s Ropey Mess… 🪢🐶

Grace is an otherwise healthy Golden Retriever. Which is why when her owners noticed she wasn’t herself and started vomiting they decided to get her checked out.

Grace presented to Dr Emily with an uncomfortable abdomen.
Upon abdominal palpation, Dr Emily discovered an unusual object.
It is also important to note that Grace is known for being a bit of a scavenger and eat things she probably shouldn’t. Quite common with this breed 🫣
Dr Emily suggested further diagnostic investigation by the form of abdominal X-rays.

The X-rays showed a foreign item located in Grace’s abdomen 🩻

Grace’s owners decided to proceed with an exploratory laparotomy (ex-lap).
Dr Harry performed the procedure and found a rope like object in her intestines.
Grace recovered from surgery very well and was able to go home that afternoon! 🤩

We hope Grace has a speedy recovery at home and has learnt her lesson and the only thing she will choose to ingest in the future is her food! 🤞

Well done to both Dr Emily and Dr Harry for their brilliance in helping Grace with lifesaving diagnosis and surgery. Also to her owners for getting Grace seen in a timely manner when they noticed something wasn’t right with her! 🥰

A great outcome for both Grace, staff and her owners! 💜🩺💙

Sq**rt’s Serious Smash.. 🫣

This is Sq**rt the eastern long neck turtle 🐢

He was brought in by a member of the public after being found on the road, noticeably hit by a car 😣

Sq**rt has almost finished his course of antibiotics and his shell is healing well, which means he will be able to be released back into the wild soon!

It is amazing how quickly these turtles develop a personality after a few weeks of settling in and become a staff favourite! 🥰

All of our wild turtles get an affectionate name and are cared for by our wonderful exotics team!

If you notice an injured turtle, please feel free to bring it into the clinic for treatment/care 💜🩺💙
