Harlow’s smelly situation .. 🤢

One of our staff member’s beautiful dogs, Harlow was in for a dental with Dr Emily to cure the source of her smelly breath! 🦷

Luckily for Harlow, her dental x-rays showed all she required was a scale and polish to remove some calculus and mild gingivitis.
Dental x-rays that are now a service we provide with all our stage one dentals.

She recovered well after her surgery and enjoyed lots of cuddles from our staff💜🐾💙

Bubbles’ Balding Problem…

🚨CAUTION: PHOTO CONTAINING SURGICAL MASS🚨

Bubbles is a ferret who was losing her hair a few months ago and in fact balding in spots, which had the owner baffled.
On exam a large abdominal mass was palpated by Dr Michelle. She was admitted for the day for an abdominal ultrasound with our superstar Ultrasonographer Dr Jenny.

The results of the ultrasound showed a large mass in her abdomen near her kidneys.

After trialing some medical management, Dr Michelle offered to owners an ex-lap (exploratory laparotomy) which is an exploration surgery.
Inside she found an irregular mass, which would’ve been the same mass Dr Jenny saw, attached to part of her left kidney.
The mass was removed and sent away for histopathology to determine what it was.

The results of the histopathology, unfortunately came back as inconclusive.

Dr Michelle stated to her owners that it could have been an adrenal mass which could be the cause of the hair loss and to check back in 4 weeks to see if her hair had grown back or not.

4 weeks later and Bubbles is a ferret full of hair! 👏🏼
She looks like a normal ferret and we are so happy to see how much she has improved!!

Another great result for the exotics team at NRVH!! 🤩
Thank you Dr Michelle, Dr Jenny and our staff for their expertise during bubbles’ time during her stay in the clinic and of course her owner for bringing her in and following up with her so consistently! Without everyone’s support, Bubbles would possibly still be a balding ferret! 💙🐾💜

Macaroni’s lumpy problem..

This little superstar is Macaroni the rat!🐀

As you can see she had a substantial lump attached under her arm which was starting to affect her movement and health.

The risk of anaesthetic was high due to her age and condition, however Dr Mami recommended to remove the lump surgically to improve her quality of life.

Dr Mami sucessfully removed the lump and thankfully she recovered really well after surgery, even to the point where she was happy enough to start eating moments after waking up! 🤩

Before surgery, her weight was 300 grams. After the lump was removed. Both Macaroni and the lump were weighed.
Macaroni reweighed at 200 grams and the lump weighed 100 grams.

She returned for her recheck post surgery, happy and inquisitive, plus her wound was healing well. Her owners stated she was more active at home and is doing great post op.

We hope she continues to recover well and improve! 🥰

Congratulations to Dr Mami and the exotics team for another great outcome for one of our beautiful patients, also to her owners for bringing her in and electing to do life changing surgery on their wonderful pet! 💙🐾💜

Today is going to be a scorching 40 degrees in the Hawkesbury area and most places around NSW today! 🔥🥵

Please remember to keep your pets cool and comfortable! 😎

Our wildlife also may require your help, if you can leave extra water sources out away from any pets of your own that could be predators to them, it may just save a life!🚰

If you see any signs of heat stress or think your pet may be in distress, especially brachycephalic breeds (like Bulldogs, Pekingese, Persian cats, etc), older pets or pets with any existing medical issues, please go to your closest vet even if they are not your usual clinic, urgent medical treatment is essential!

Keep your pets safe this summer and if you have any concerns please always feel free to contact us at NRVH for any advice! 💜🩺💙

⚠️🚨CAUTION: THIS POST CONTAINS PHOTOS OF SURGERY & INTERNAL ORGANS🚨⚠️

This stunning black and white coastal python unfortunately had some issues laying her eggs and had become egg bound (Dystocia), which means she needed our help! 🥚🤕

Unable to pass the eggs naturally meant we needed to surgically intervene.

This problem usually occurs for a few reasons:

🐍Poor husbandry: these include a lack of suitable substrate, suboptimal temperature and humidity and overbreeding.

🐍Health: things like dehydration, stress or underlying illness can delay or prevent egg laying as well as poor nutrition.

🐍Physical Issues: these factors include oversized, abnormally shaped or soft shelled eggs, uterine Inertia or any existing masses or tumors blocking the passage of the eggs.

Dr Michelle anesthetised and intubated her and as reptiles do not breathe for themselves under anaesthesia, she was then placed on our exotic ventilator throughout the procedure.

The surgery was successful and Dr Michelle was able to spey (desex) her at the same time to prevent this happening again.

As you can see in the photos attached to this post, due to their elongated bodies, snakes anatomy is far different from that of other animals. All of their organs are therefore elongated also. Snakes have what is called a Salpinx which is like a uterus and ovaries which are those tiny clear bubbles/balls.

Once the surgery was complete, a lignocaine (local anaesthetic) patch was placed along her wound site to give her some pain relief and she was placed in a pre-warmed brinsea (temperature controlled box) where she was given manual breaths by one of our nurses until she was breathing on her own.

She was back to her sweet and curious self the next morning and was sent home with some antibiotics to assist her healing and to prevent infection.

Compliments to Dr Michelle, her wonderful exotics team and her owner for another great outcome for one of our scaly patients! 🖤🩺🤍

Being itchy is a horrible feeling that we know all too well ourselves! 😰
So you can imagine how our pets feel when they can’t relieve themselves from this issue as well and readily as we can.

The weather unfortunately has brought on a lot of skin conditions as of late, however, this is not always the cause.

We do have various medical options like a treat- like anti-itch tablet or a long acting anti-itch injection.

Depending on the cause will depend on the treatment recommended, so why not ease your dog’s itch and book in to see one of our lovely and knowledgeable vets today! 💙🐾💜

Do you accurately know your birds gender? 🤔
In some bird breeds, like Eclectus Parrots it is easy as colour difference.

In some breeds however, there are no other variables other than being sexed either surgically or via DNA 🧬

We offer DNA sexing in clinic, the results are sent away and come back via email to the clinic within a few weeks.

This is done by obtaining a small blood sample from the bird 💉
For the safety of your bird and our staff, this procedure is done with a short gaseous anaesthetic via mask induction.

Your bird, once awake can then happily go home with you 🥰

We also offer Beak and Feather Disease testing using the same method and both tests can be completed and sent at the same time.

Ask one of our lovely team members how you can book this procedure in today or if you have any questions, they would be more than happy to assist you 💜🩺💙

Charlie, the gentle 9 year old Cavoodle presented into the clinic last week with 24 hours of inappetence and lethargy, however unfortunately continued to decline to the point he was struggling to maintain his balance.

On physical examination Dr Dylana found that Charlie’s abdomen was tense. 🥺

Upon abdominal ultrasound a tumour was detected in either his spleen or liver.

He was admitted that day for emergency surgery to remove the entirety of the tumour and spleen, which was done successfully by Dr Dylana.

As you can see in one of the photos, the total mass and spleen removed from Charlie weighed 670grams, we’re sure he was glad to have that taken out!! 😳

Charlie stayed over night in hospital for supportive care and went home the next day.

Top marks to Charlie’s owners for being diligent with bringing Charlie in a timely manner, Dr Dylana for performing a life saving surgery and the rest of our NRVH team! 🐾💙🐶

Does your dog or cat’s breath smell? 🤢

It may be a sign that he/she is in need of a dental! 🪥

Dentals are a routine procedure, that we do here at NRVH 🏥

It is quite hard to see back teeth in your dog/cat while conscious, even for our vets.
Which is why our dentals are always performed with the animal anaesthetised, for your pets safety as well as ours.

Our vets will only remove the teeth that are required, such as retained baby teeth, rotten teeth or teeth that will cause your dog/cat discomfort in the near future.
This is decided upon performing a dental X-rays of your dogs mouth, so we are able to accurately view the roots of each tooth also.
Removing teeth is a hard process and our vets will always try to preserve as many as they can.

Routine scale and polishes can help keep tartar away and prevent severe cases of gingivitis (a mild and common form of gum disease) and more serious issues like tooth root abscesses.

Give NRVH a call today to see how you can book your pet in for a dental check up!

The weather is warming up and becoming even humid at times combining with the rain ☀️
This becomes the perfect environmental conditions for mosquitos and flies.
These dreaded insects provide food for a number of creatures, however they also carry numerous diseases. 🦟🦠🪰

Two of these being a fatal diseases for bunnies, Calicivirus or Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease, in which there are two strains, that we luckily can now vaccinate against.
Unfortunately we do not have a vaccination to prevent in Myxomatosis 😔💔

Calicivirus attacks the liver and intestines of your rabbit and also causes internal haemorrhage in which they can deteriorate suddenly in 1-3 days.

Myxomatosis is a severe viral disease that affects a number of parts of the rabbits body such as their ge****ls, eyes, liver and lungs.

Unfortunately once your rabbit has contracted Cailicivirus or Myxomatosis, there is no treatment and humane euthanasia is essential.

Filavac is the new vaccine that we have here at NRVH to vaccinate against both strains of Calicivirus 💉
We highly recommend it to all our bunny owners, whether an indoor or outdoor rabbit.
It is an annual vaccination and can be done along with any desexing surgeries also.

Contact one of our lovely receptionist to arrange a Filavac Vaccination for your bunny today! 💜🐰💙

With the weather warming up, snakes are on the move either looking for food, somewhere warm to bask or to for a mate.
With the increase in snake activity, this unfortunately increases the chances of your pet coming across this species, their curiosity getting the better of them and sometimes regrettably being bitten 🤕

You will unlikely see the bite wound on your dog/cat, so this is something that is not of significance that determines for sure your dog or cat has not been bitten.

Symptoms of snake bites include:
🐍Lethargy
🐍Vomiting
🐍Dilated pupils
🐍Loss of control of bladder and/or bowels
🐍Weakness of limbs or collapse (usually happens suddenly)
🐍Muscle tremors, shaking and reduced eye blink
🐍Blood in the urine
🐍Irregular bleeding from nose, mouth or re**um

Depending on the type of snake and the amount of venom injected, some animals once bitten may have less than an hour to live.

So, if we are your usual vet hospital that regularly see’s your pet, however we are not the closest vet hospital to your residence or where the dog/cat was bitten, then please seek EMERGENCY vet care at the clinic closest to you as it will increase your dog or cat’s chance of survival.
