Charlie, the gentle 9 year old Cavoodle presented into the clinic last week with 24 hours of inappetence and lethargy, however unfortunately continued to decline to the point he was struggling to maintain his balance.

On physical examination Dr Dylana found that Charlie’s abdomen was tense. 🥺

Upon abdominal ultrasound a tumour was detected in either his spleen or liver.

He was admitted that day for emergency surgery to remove the entirety of the tumour and spleen, which was done successfully by Dr Dylana.

As you can see in one of the photos, the total mass and spleen removed from Charlie weighed 670grams, we’re sure he was glad to have that taken out!! 😳

Charlie stayed over night in hospital for supportive care and went home the next day.

Top marks to Charlie’s owners for being diligent with bringing Charlie in a timely manner, Dr Dylana for performing a life saving surgery and the rest of our NRVH team! 🐾💙🐶

Does your dog or cat’s breath smell? 🤢

It may be a sign that he/she is in need of a dental! 🪥

Dentals are a routine procedure, that we do here at NRVH 🏥

It is quite hard to see back teeth in your dog/cat while conscious, even for our vets.
Which is why our dentals are always performed with the animal anaesthetised, for your pets safety as well as ours.

Our vets will only remove the teeth that are required, such as retained baby teeth, rotten teeth or teeth that will cause your dog/cat discomfort in the near future.
This is decided upon performing a dental X-rays of your dogs mouth, so we are able to accurately view the roots of each tooth also.
Removing teeth is a hard process and our vets will always try to preserve as many as they can.

Routine scale and polishes can help keep tartar away and prevent severe cases of gingivitis (a mild and common form of gum disease) and more serious issues like tooth root abscesses.

Give NRVH a call today to see how you can book your pet in for a dental check up!

The weather is warming up and becoming even humid at times combining with the rain ☀️
This becomes the perfect environmental conditions for mosquitos and flies.
These dreaded insects provide food for a number of creatures, however they also carry numerous diseases. 🦟🦠🪰

Two of these being a fatal diseases for bunnies, Calicivirus or Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease, in which there are two strains, that we luckily can now vaccinate against.
Unfortunately we do not have a vaccination to prevent in Myxomatosis 😔💔

Calicivirus attacks the liver and intestines of your rabbit and also causes internal haemorrhage in which they can deteriorate suddenly in 1-3 days.

Myxomatosis is a severe viral disease that affects a number of parts of the rabbits body such as their ge****ls, eyes, liver and lungs.

Unfortunately once your rabbit has contracted Cailicivirus or Myxomatosis, there is no treatment and humane euthanasia is essential.

Filavac is the new vaccine that we have here at NRVH to vaccinate against both strains of Calicivirus 💉
We highly recommend it to all our bunny owners, whether an indoor or outdoor rabbit.
It is an annual vaccination and can be done along with any desexing surgeries also.

Contact one of our lovely receptionist to arrange a Filavac Vaccination for your bunny today! 💜🐰💙

With the weather warming up, snakes are on the move either looking for food, somewhere warm to bask or to for a mate.
With the increase in snake activity, this unfortunately increases the chances of your pet coming across this species, their curiosity getting the better of them and sometimes regrettably being bitten 🤕

You will unlikely see the bite wound on your dog/cat, so this is something that is not of significance that determines for sure your dog or cat has not been bitten.

Symptoms of snake bites include:
🐍Lethargy
🐍Vomiting
🐍Dilated pupils
🐍Loss of control of bladder and/or bowels
🐍Weakness of limbs or collapse (usually happens suddenly)
🐍Muscle tremors, shaking and reduced eye blink
🐍Blood in the urine
🐍Irregular bleeding from nose, mouth or re**um

Depending on the type of snake and the amount of venom injected, some animals once bitten may have less than an hour to live.

So, if we are your usual vet hospital that regularly see’s your pet, however we are not the closest vet hospital to your residence or where the dog/cat was bitten, then please seek EMERGENCY vet care at the clinic closest to you as it will increase your dog or cat’s chance of survival.

Rabbit diet is a very important part of their overall health and wellbeing 🌱
It ensures that they are getting the right nutritional intake, tends to natural dental burring and keeps their guts moving.

As well as access to good clean hay 24 hours a day and some green leafy vegetables/herbs, pellets may need to be an addition in your rabbits diet depending on your individual rabbits needs.

We only recommend the best, which is why we stock Burgess Rabbit Nuggets in our clinic!
Burgess has created different types of nuggets/pellets that cater to a range of different lifestyles and ages of your bunny 🤩

We stock the following all in 1.5kg bags:

🐰Burgess Excel Indoor Rabbit Pellets
🐰Burgess Excel Rabbit Pellets with Oregano
🐰Burgess Excel Mature Rabbit Pellets with Cranberry
🐰Burgess Excel Rabbit Pellets with Mint for Junior and Dwarf Rabbits
🐰Burgess Excel Light Pellets for Overweight Rabbits
🐰Burgess Excel Rabbit Pellets with Mint

We also stock Burgess Nuggets for Guinea Pigs as well as their dietary requirements are much different than our bunnies 🐹

If you cant locate any on the shelf, please speak to our lovely reception team about how we can order some in for you 💜🐾💙

Birds make unreal pets! 🤩
They are charismatic, humorous, and incredible to look at.

However, they are a pet that is quite easily lost as they are magnificent escape artists 😰

Birds can reach kilometres with ease quickly which decreases the odds of reuniting owners with their beloved pets.

There are a few identifying ways to “label” your bird should someone find them and decently turn them into a vet hospital🏥

These “labels” are especially important within this species as in times of stress, your bird may look dishevelled, not speak common identifying phrases, or recognise you which may make confirming the bird is indeed yours, difficult.

The first is a leg band in which breeders usually place on the birds leg when they are quite young with an identification number.
This does not harm the bird or affect the birds health unless the incorrect size has been placed and it is too loose or too tight (which will then require removal).

The other, like our cats and dogs is a microchip!😁
Which we at NRVH can easily accommodate.
They will require a short anaesthesia by the form of gaseous induction, to ensure your bird is pain free during the procedure.

The NSW Pet Registry (the same one your own dogs and cats chip numbers are connected to) unfortunately does not register birds.
Although we do suggest using the Australasian Animal Registry.
This registry stores microchips for birds, reptiles, and ferrets.

Talk to our lovely staff about preventing heartbreak and microchipping your pet! 🪶💚🩺

☀️🌡️EXTREME HEATWAVE! 🆘🔥

Over the past few days, the weather has really turned the temperature up! 🥵

Which means before we leave for the day whether that be for work or going out, it is important to remember our pets back home who will need us to be vigilant in preparing them for surviving the heat 🐱🐰🐹🦜🐓🦆

Whether that be bringing them inside (even in a crate to keep cool), putting some ice cubes or ice blocks in their waters, making sure they have access to a cool place while also ensuring they have ample shade as the sun moves throughout the day 🧊🐶💦

❌NEVER leave your animals in a hot car, even a few minutes can be fatal!❌

If you own a dog, limit unnecessary exercise and only walk your dog in the coolest parts of the day.

Brachycephalic animals will naturally be more stressed/affected by the heat more as the flow of oxygen throughout the body is reduced 😮‍💨

All animals suffer in the heat, even our wildlife try to escape it! 🦉

So remember if you are able to leave some water out for some of our natives also!

If you are concerned your pet may be experiencing heat stroke or heat stress, please seek immediate veterinary treatment! 💙🐾💜

Kevin and the toe tale.. 🐾

‼️PHOTOS OF BLOOD AND AMPUTATION WITHIN THIS POST‼️

This sweet ginger and white dream is Kevin 🐈

Kevin unfortunately got himself into some mischief and injured one of his toes on a hind leg.

After some X-rays showed that the infection was too deep, Dr Dylana decided that it would be in Kevin’s best interest to remove the toe 🩻

The procedure was done that day successfully and Kevin was allowed to go home that afternoon with some great pain relief and most importantly lots of cuddles from his parents!

We hope Kevin is back to his usually bouncy self soon and stays away from potential hazards in the future! ⚠️

Another animals life made better by our fabulous Dr Dylana and Kevin’s wonderful owners, plus our team at NRVH of course, who help make it all possible 🩺🧡🐱

A leap in the wrong direction…🐸

Freckles the Magnificent Tree Frog, not just in breed but in beauty, saw a small opening within his cage and decided that he would use the opportunity to go on an adventure.

Unfortunately, he took an uneducated jump and ended up bruising his abdomen ☹

After a thorough check over from Dr Michelle, some medication was administered and sent home with him to assist his healing.

Hopefully Freckles will hop back to health in no time! ☺️💚🙏🏼

Dental issues are unfortunately a common occurrence within the rabbit species that we see in clinic 🩺
It can come from poor genetics, trauma and not being fed a quality diet.

Toothpaste is a regular here at NRVH! 🐇

She has a dental problem called incisor malocclusion.
This is a condition that occurs when the rabbits incisors do not line up correctly which in result, prohibits the incisor teeth from naturally burring down evenly.

If left untreated or managed:
🦷 can be painful
🦷cause trauma
🦷can prevent the bunny from eating altogether

Using a specialised dental burr, we are able to perform this procedure conscious (without using any sedatives) as it is very quick and painless.

Toothpaste always leaves the clinic feeling happy and I’m sure like a new bunny! 😁💜🐰

This is king! 👑
He is an easy to love British bulldog.
His owners noticed something wasn’t quite right with King as he was acting lethargic and seeming to go downhill rapidly.
Being an otherwise healthy 4 year old dog, further diagnostics were required 🩻

Dr Emily and Dr Michelle palpated a hard object in Kings abdomen which was noticeably painful for him.
An ultrasound and some radiographs (X-rays) were performed to see if a foreign body or an abnormality could be detected.

Unfortunately in kings case, the foreign body was a wooden BBQ skewer which due to its material, cannot show up on an X-ray and was up too high under his ribs for it to be detected in the abdominal ultrasound.

After that, King shortly went into an exploratory surgery (ex-lap) in where the abdomen and stomach were opened up and the skewer was pulled from his oesophagus/stomach and a gastric tube was placed so he could continue to receive adequate nutrients from food and medications whilst in hospital without needing to swallow through his damaged oesophagus.

Post surgery, he recovered great with a few days in hospital.
King then went home and presented back into the clinic on Saturday for a check up, visibly so much brighter and happier!

Another excellent outcome and life saved by our amazing NRVH team and King’s diligent owners! 👏🏼🐶🩺

This sweet Short Neck Turtle presented to Dr Michelle for wounds the owner has noticed had been developing ☹️
He was being housed with another turtle who is now larger than him and is starting to show some aggression towards this little guy!

This often happens due to their food response and differences in sizes between co habitating turtles.
Short and long neck turtles should also not co inhabit/exist in the same tank together.

Owners have to be very vigilant and watch carefully for any signs of aggression within this species, especially around feeding time as bites can lead to serious consequences including trauma & loss of limbs 🤕

This little mate was sent home with a treatment plan of antibiotics, dry docking and permanent separation from his bigger house mate 🐢💙👍🏼

(If viewing this post on Instagram: please don’t deprive yourself of sliding across to view the last photo of this cute fella who was just generally happy to be here 🥹)

Back in September, this sweet hen, Harriet was found by her owners with a gaping wound in her back/side🥺

We were able to intubate her successfully which provided her with a safer form of anaesthesia that then allowed Dr Emily to perform the her stitch up surgery which as you can see came together well.

Miss Harriet recovered perfectly post surgery in a warm brinsea (a temperature controlled warming box) as birds temperatures rapidly decline in times of sickness/stress and surgery.

She has returned back today and as you can see, it has healed flawlessly!
Brilliant work Dr Emily and Harriet’s owners for reaching a great outcome for her 🐔❤️🪡
