This is Dorris & Kora 🐾

They recently visited our hospital for their Hip and Elbow Scoring, which is a routine procedure here at NRVH!

Hip & Elbow Scoring is done predominantly by breeders to ensure those particular parts of the body are satisfactory and that their future progeny will not be predisposed to any of those issues genetically.

A quick anaesthetic is performed as the dog must be kept extremely still and positioning them perfectly is required to help ensure the best possible score is achieved.

We then send the X-rays to the scoring company of the breeders choosing & they await the results.

If you are interested in this service, please get in contact with us either by phone or email! 💜🩺💙

Starting our Monday off the right way with a puppy party!

How cute are these Corgi puppies whom are in for their first vaccinations and microchips! 😍

Starting December 1st, the NSW government is cracking down on dog breeders and ensuring their dogs and puppies are microchipped and breeders will have to apply for a Breeder Identification Number (BIN).

This reduces the amount of lost dogs not being re united with their families plus also reduces the amount of breeders not doing the right thing by their pets.

If you have any concerns or enquiries about this process, please contact your local council 💜🩺💙

Welcome to another “Meet the team at NRVH🐾”

Finishing up on our Kennel Hand segment is the lovely Bella! ✨

We recently took on Bella a few months ago as a kennel hand after she shone so well while on her work placement with us!
She is hard working and has initiative which is extremely helpful in such a busy vet hospital!

Bella is such an asset to our team, she is always so eager to help out with anything and everything! Whether it’s a yucky mess to clean up or holding a patient so others can remove its IV catheter, Bella is always so keen to get in and help get the job done.

She is passionate about creating positive experiences for pets & their families plus assisting in smooth workflow, which reflects in her work ethic within our clinic.

Bella is always so caring, empathetic and compassionate towards all our patients in hospital, making sure they are always on a clean bed and have been toileted regularly, which makes working a shift with her pleasant as you know patients are feeling attended to and happy!

She is a lovely person and is nothing but kind, which is why we are extremely lucky to have Bella now apart of our NRVH family! 🥰

🚨CAUTION: PHOTOS OF SURGERY CONTAINED WITHIN THIS POST!🚨

Cockatiel Conundrum… 😬

This is Georgia the cockatiel whom came in to see Dr Nao for a consult to assess a small mass near her cloaca.

Georgia was given a quick general anaesthetic in the form of a gaseous induction to assess the mass properly, take some blood for testing and to retrieve an FNA sample (a sample taken by injecting a small needle into the mass & collect any cells or liquid out) 💉

The sample of the FNA was suggestive of a cyst and her bloods came back unremarkable which means according to her bloods her organs and their functions are working well.

Georgia was able to go home that same afternoon once awake enough plus with a plan agreed upon by Dr Nao and Georgias owners to enhance her quality of life.
Due to other predisposing factors of the location of the mass and Georgias age, it was decided that it was in Georgias best interest to have it surgically removed.

After 2 weeks, Georgia was admitted into hospital for the day to have her surgery performed.
The procedure was a success and as you can see, Georgia was up and eating upon recovery!
Georgia was able to go home the same afternoon with some take home medication to assist her healing.

She has since been back for a recheck appointment and we are excited to inform you that she has recovered very well! 🥰

Another awesome avian success story for Dr Nao and our exotics team and big props to Georgias owners for bringing her in to assess the lump before it became a bigger issue for Georgia 💜🩺💙

Ticks & Your Pet.. 🤒

This is one of the most serious yet completely preventable emergencies we treat in dogs and cats.

Tick paralysis progresses quickly and can be fatal, even with intensive treatment. Early signs can be subtle: weakness, wobbliness, coughing, vomiting, breathing changes, or just “not being themselves.”

Don’t be fooled by the “using tick prevention only in the summer months” tale.
Ticks are prevalent YEAR ROUND and as pet owners, we should be providing our pets with YEAR ROUND prevention, otherwise we could be gambling with our pets health and safety!

Our tick cases are already in the double digits within the past few months and it’s very alarming to both our clients and our staff to see these patients suffer something that could have been prevented.
If you’re not keen on doing a monthly dose of a preventative, there are other options available, like 3 or 6 monthly chews/topical treatments or a new injection that protects against fleas and ticks for 12 months!

Companies are trying their best to help make prevention easier for pet owners, however it is up to us as their caregivers to be responsible and protect them.
If you’re unsure which product is best for your pet, our team is always happy to help!

Not every tick is easy to find. They can hide in the gums, ears, between toes, and even inside folds of skin. Missing a tick does not mean someone was careless, they are tiny, cryptic parasites designed to go unnoticed to survive.
‼️Once a tick is located on your pet, it is important to seek IMMEDIATE vet care‼️

Our vets and nurses care deeply about every animal that walks through our doors. When a pet becomes critically ill or passes away, despite our team doing everything medically possible, it affects all of us 💔

Even with rapid diagnosis, antiserum, oxygen therapy and round-the-clock monitoring, some animals don’t survive tick paralysis.
The toxin affects breathing muscles, the heart, the oesophagus, and more.

The best protection is prevention. If your pet is overdue for tick prevention, please don’t delay. This season is already severe 💜🩺💙

Welcome to another “Staff Pet Spotlight! 🌟”

This is our staff member, Andrea’s dog, Bridgette and the incredible story of how she became to be a member of Andreas family 🐾

Bridgette hasn’t always had such a cruisey and spoilt life.
Andrea found Bridgette on the side of the road two days before Christmas on 38-40 degree late Saturday afternoon, collapsed, quite malnourished, covered in fleas, scared and alone 😓

Being the compassionate person Andrea is, she took this sad dog home after ringing all the appropriate vet hospitals & shelters close to her, however all were closed.
She gave her a nice warm bath and some food, water and a comfortable & safe place to sleep for the night ❤️‍🩹

After the Christmas break, Andrea took her to the shelter & expressed her interest in this girl if her owners could not be located, and offered to foster her in the meantime.
She had a microchip although the details were disconnected 👎🏼
As the pound were extremely full (some of the busiest time of the year for them unfortunately 🥺) they jumped on the offer for Andrea to foster her.
After 21 long days, Andrea was able to make Bridgette a permanent part of her family! 🎉

This is such an amazing story of “right place at the right time” and ofcorse fate.
Bridgette is one of the lucky dogs that have a happy ending and she will never know the feeling of being alone or hungry again 🥰

Welcome to another “Meet the team at NRVH🐾”

Introducing another newbie to our ever growing team, the fabulous Lyn! 🌟

Lyn has only just began her NRVH journey, starting earlier this year, joining our wonderful reception team & it feels like she has been with us forever (in a good way 😉).

Lyn is full of s***k and positivity, which makes her very suited to her role in being one of the first people you encounter when you walk through our doors!
She states that her main love of the job is helping clients through their journey of pet ownership, both the good and bad times.

Lyn enjoys having such a variety of different species come through, from baby goats one day to bearded dragons, birds or a litter of puppies the next! No day is the same & that is what keeps our jobs interesting, however it isn’t for everyone but with a personality and the type of person Lyn is, she is more than capable of handling it all!

Lyn is a delightful colleague and is always up for a laugh, which is very refreshing in our line of work! She is compassionate to clients and is always happy to help out no matter the problem, Lyn is keen to help you out!

We are very grateful to have Lyn now apart of our NRVH family! 🥰

Lilo’s Little Toothy Trouble… 🦷

Lilo is a very sweet and bubbly entire female ferret whom came in to see Dr Nao for a discoloured tooth and some hormonal issues that her owners have noticed Lilo exhibiting 😳

Dr Nao explained to Lilo’s owners that it would be in her best interest to have her mouth radiographed with our special dental X-rays machine to see if the tooth needed to be removed and explained entire ferret hormonal behaviour and the options in which to combat these issues in this species, one of which is by the form of a hormonal implant that is given via an injection (similar to a microchip) and it usually needs to be repeated every 18 months.

Lilo’s owners consented to the dental procedure and agreed it would be in her best interest to apply the hormonal implant at the same time (as this is a bigger needle, in ferrets we usually put them under a quick gaseous anaesthetic to inject this) so as all of our dental procedures no matter the species are done under a general anaesthetic (except for certain rabbit incisor trims), it was a good opportunity for this to be done at the same time.

Lilo presented back into our clinic for her dental procedure which went swimmingly!
The dental X-rays showed that the tooth was fractured and was required to be removed.
The removal was routine and the rest of her teeth were scaled and polished and the hormonal implant was given 💉😷🪥

Lilo was given some pain relief and other medication to assist her healing post surgery! 🥰

Such an amazing outcome for all involved, especially little Lilo! 💜🩺💙

🚨CAUTION: PHOTOS OF SURGERY ARE CONTAINED WITHIN THIS POST 🚨

Iris and her issue… 🫣

This beautiful and utterly sweet one year old rat, is Iris! 🐀

Iris as you can see from the photos has a freeloader attached to her in the form of a tumor/lump.

Iris’s pawrents brought her in to see Dr Nao about said issue and it was decided that it was in Iris’s best interest to have it removed surgically.

Iris then underwent her procedure to remove the huge mass which, when removed weighed a whopping 144 grams! 😳

It is safe to say Iris is feeling a whole lot lighter after her surgery and recovered very well under the watchful eyes of our exotics nurses.

Iris was able to go home the same afternoon after enjoying a post surgery snack.

Since her operation, Iris’s owners have informed us that she is healing very well and has returned back to her cheeky self!
Iris is currently owned by Out of The Pocket Micro-Sanctuary Rescue and they have informed us that both Iris and her friend Beans are available for adoption! 🥰

Well done to everyone involved for another fantastic outcome for one of our wonderful exotic species! 💜🩺💙

A Slithery Situation… 🐍

This green tree python unfortunately presented a few weeks ago to Dr Mami with a severe issue. A cloacal prolapse. 😳

The owner had done the right thing by bringing it in straight away as he noticed it this morning and also putting the snake in a tub of sugar water (which helps the tissue not expand and further worsen the prolapse)

Unfortunately this is a reoccurring problem for this snake.
The time before this, it was fixed with external sutures as is done routinely with this issue, however it has now pr*****ed again with a large part of the internal organs (cloaca and digestive tract) were exposed.🫣

The only option to correct it this time would be to surgically intervene again however internal fixation would be required.
It is a more invasive way for the patient, however at this point it was the snakes only option other than euthanasia.

Their owners consented to the surgery and it was performed the same day.

The surgery went well and the snake recovered great under the watchful eye of one of our exotic nurses.🤩
They were able to go home that afternoon with some take home antibiotic injections to ensure they are given every possibility to heal well and continue to recover smoothly.

The snake has since been back to see Dr Mami for a recheck and is doing extremely well! 🥰

Congratulations for a successful outcome to everyone involved! We thoroughly enjoy seeing our patients improve so drastically and be able to perform live saving procedures! 💜🩺💙
