~ Toad Wet Specimen & Replica Replica ~

It was such a pleasure working with a nice small group for a change

As usual, it was a jammed packed weekend learning the process of Toad dissection, colouring important anatomy structures of the specimen and preserving them as a wet specimen for display.

We also, got to work on a selection of native reptile, creating mold and cast of the individual specimen using oil paints to bring them back to life.

Everyone attention to detail and efforts weren't unnoticed.

Thanks to everyone participating, hope to work with you all very soon.

~ Female Forrest Red Tailed Black Cockatoo ~

This species is such a pleasure to work on, found as a MVA specimens from Armadale a few yeas back, collected by who was eager to have her taxidermied.

Prior to completing her she seemed like she was missing something so the addition of a fruit certainly brought it all together.

Very happy to have done this piece for 🖤

Pet preservation.

Its always such delicate work processing people's pets.

It wasn't until skinning this cockatiel i had noticed the stitching carried out by the vets.

Merry had Necropsies prior to me working on her.
She had two of her feather tacks removed and damaged feathers caught throughout the stitching.

This presented further challenges recreating a natural mount her parents would be happy with.

Such a sweet display. It was a pleasure to work on her.

~ Mammalian Taxidermy Workshop ~

Over four days we learnt the strange but beautiful art of taxidermy.
Students learnt new techniques working on mammals, specifically, ethically sourced fruit bats.

From creating death-masks, recording measurements, skinning & defleshing. skin preparation, tanning, body biding artificial manikin making and inserting and adjusting eyes to fit.

As usual, it was a pleasure seeing everyone so focused and engaged working on their specimens and the final satisfaction.

Till next year. Thanks for 2023!!

Full on weekend processing specimens. This group did amazing job from start to finish.

Thank you everyone for coming, such a fun group of people to work with🤗🤗🤗

We created a Study Skins as the final position instead of preserving "bits and pieces" students can then display their work under a glass dome or shadow box once dry.

~Dromaius novaehollandiae~

"Emus belong to an ancient group of birds and have much reduced wings, and only a singular functional digit or finger. There is a claw at the end of finger that hits at its dinosaur ancestors "

Processing these wings was kind of rushed job taking 4 months. The amount oil leaching out from the degreasing stage was a lot. The claw was removed prior too maceration reducing any further deterioration.

~ Pygmy Python ~
Antaresia perthensis

Plastinated specimen, a technique of tissue preservation developed by Gunther Von Hagen's in 1977 consists of forced impregnation of biological specimens with plastic resins. Designed to preserve the body for educational and instructional purposes – in a more detailed way. Plastinates are dry, odorless and durable.

One of many plastinated specimens on display in the Arid Areas, liver sample were taken for the Museums records before positioning the python in a natural position then placing in buffered formalin for fixing. The actual process of plastination took place at the veterinary Anatomy Museum and Human Pathology - Murdoch uni.

Luckily with this specimen no painting was needed as colorations held quite nicely, just the eyes needed painting.

Diaphonized specimen on display at the New BelmontHub.

🦘
🦘
🦘
This technique of preservation was created by G. Dingerkus and L.D. Uhler, scientists in 1977.
The process of diaphonization, also known as "clearing and staining."
🦘
The specimens are placed in 13 chemical baths, first fixed in formalin, then rended transparent in a solution of trypsin a digestive enzyme that break down the flesh.
Then placed into solutions of dyes that stain the muscle, bones or cartilage.
Once the process is complete you are left with a transparent flexible specimen that allows you to identify bones and cartilage structures as they exist in the body without any displacement.
( side note, The denser and larger the tissues, the longer it will take for any stains to pe*****te significantly)

commonly found in aquatic environments that is pathogenic to amphibians, reptiles, and mammals.

This specimen had multiple puncture wounds behind each limb and along it's body. Also the damage too its nostrils all inflicted by its cage buddies.

These specimens were collected by .prendergast thank you!! on a research field trip a few years back.
They have been waiting patiently frozen until this year.

The antennas on the male had completely broken off, utilising a pinned specimen from the collection with minimal data, collected in 1950s.
The head was removed and glued onto the flying specimen in this diorama.

You can find this display in , arid areas.
Very enjoyable diorama to create. 😎👌
🐝
"The males play no part in nest building and provisioning and serve only to ensure that all females are fertilised. They vary markedly in size and exhibit alternative mating strategies: large males fight to monopolize emergence holes at the nesting areas, seeking to mate with virgin females as they come to the surface; smaller males tend to patrol the forage plants. Competition for females at emergence holes is fierce and a female venturing out may be instantly enveloped in a buzzing, tumbling ball of males. Once mated, though, females cease to attract males and are able to go about their nesting activities undisturbed. When burrowing into the brick-hard clay, females first wet the soil with nectar to soften it, then bite it away with the jaws. The first soil excavated is used to construct a mud turret at the entrance and this serves to prevent soil tipped out from falling back in"

The specimens were part of a licence contract cull on the outskirts of removed from a farmers property due to eating to many dung beetles.
They were then donated to the for me to prepare.
These two can be found displayed in hidden amongst
The male Australian White Ibis secures a pairing territory on a branch of a tall tree in order to attract a female. The courtship ceremony involves the male putting on a noisy display, as well as showing aggression towards other males. When a female arrives, the male attracts her by bowing from his branch. He then offers the female a twig, forging a bond when she grasps it and they begin to preen one another. Once the pair bond is cemented, the birds fly off to build a nest at another location.

Although Australian White Ibises are becoming more common in some areas, their abundance is decreasing in their natural range.

Working on this specimen was alittle challenging.
Being frozen for 20 + years and having an old injury, compound fracture on both legs
most of the bone were c r u s h e d!
You can find this specimen on display at the New 🎉🎉🎉
Due to european settlement
the used to be very common throughout .
Early to mid 1900s hunting for their pelts were sought-after, drastically reducing
their numbers.
The main threat today, is habitat destruction, predation by introduced species and being struck by cars.
population is believed to be stable or increasing, as a result of red fox control programs.

Western Long-Necked Turtle
Chelodina colliei,
Female specimen, cause of death MVA🐢🚗
Not super happy with the amount of shrinkage around the skull and leg position, definitely 👏should 👏of👏 paid more👏 attention👏 to👏 that 😭😅😅 .
The long neck turtles become more active around September to January🐢, trying to cross roads near their habitats of permanent and seasonal freshwater bodies including rivers, lakes🗻, farm dams, swamps, and natural and constructed wetlands🏞️⛲. Females tend to leave the water during spring and summer in search of sandy soils in which to lay their eggs.🤩🤩🤩

Emu
Dromaius novaehollandiae

The second-largest living bird by height, after its ratite relative, the ostrich.
It is endemic to Australia where it is the largest native bird and the only extant member of the genus Dromaius.
This stillborn cadaver was donated from a local hobby farm here in Perth.

Working on such fresh specimens the skin tends to act like wet tissue paper.
Any strain or pressure you slowly end up tearing or stretching the skin creating more work.
You can find this specimen living their best life on display in the Museum🤩🤩
