An important reminder if you have family or friends visiting our beautiful South Coast these holidays. As residents of the NSW South Coast sadly we are all too aware of the dangers of ticks. However many of our visitors come from parts of Australia without paralysis ticks and so they arrive with pets that are unprotected.
Tick numbers are particularly bad this year with ticks being particularly potent and animals requiring 2-3 times the tick serum to save them. Sadly the survival rate despite intensive care treatment is much lower than it would normally be.
So please help by letting any family or friends heading to the coast this Christmas know to tick protect any pets they are bringing before they leave home, even if the pet will be strictly indoors.

Carer found!! Thank you!! ๐
Desperately seeking foster carer for a 10 week old kelpie x puppy for two days over Christmas (24th & 25th)
We would like to send a huge thank you to our volunteers and everyone who has supported our Op Shop in Bomaderry over the last 12 months.
Your support has enabled us to care for, feed and desex our foster animals while waiting for their new homes.
Itโs enabled us to take on animals with serious medical conditions and have them treated so they can go on and live happy and healthy lives with their new families.
Itโs given us the ability to continue to work with our local community services organisations who support those dealing with homelessness and domestic violence and mental health crisis. Animals are such an important part of these peoples lives and we provide vet assistance, tick protection and food and other essentials to those referred to our program by one of these organisations.
We have also been able this year to help those struggling with severe financial hardship to have their animals seen by a vet in an emergency situation where they would otherwise have been unable to get them treated.
We can only do all this through your support. Our branch and all these programs are funded entirely through donations and sales in our Op Shop. We receive no government funding for these programs.
We will now be taking a break over Christmas to give our wonderful volunteers a much earned break and to allow them to spend some time with their families. A huge thank you to them โค๏ธ for their time each week. We couldnโt do what we do without them

๐ฏ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐ท๐๐๐! Today is set to reach the high 30โs so make sure your pets are kept cool.
Brachycephalic breeds such as pugs and French bulldogs are at even higher risk so if you can, keep indoors where cool today.
If you have to leave your pets outdoors make sure you have multiple water bowls and that there is plenty of shade all day long.
Rabbits and Guinea pigs are safer indoors but if this is not possible make sure their cage wonโt be in any sun through the day and put frozen water bottles inside to help keep them cool.
And letโs not forget our chickens. A simple misting system over their run works well to reduce the heat.
Dogs can suffer 3rd degree burns on their paw pads just like you can on your feet.

๐ง๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ก๐๐๐ฅ - ๐๐ซ๐ง๐ฅ๐๐ ๐ We are currently experiencing an alarming amount of animals being brought into our local vets with tick paralysis. Whilst our local vets work hard to save these animals it requires intensive care for many days and sadly not all animals will survive.
If you have a cat or a dog please make sure that their tick protection is up to date. If the pack says every 4 weeks repeat in 28 days. That extra few days till the same date next month can leave them unprotected for 2-3 days and our vets are seeing many cases that fall into that small window without protection.
Ticks can also be brought indoors by other pets and on our clothes. Remember that checking your pets regularly for ticks is also very important.
Early vague stages of tick paralysis can include the following symptoms:
Lethargy
Reduced appetite
Occasional vomiting
If you see any of these symptoms, search your pets for ticks immediately and contact your vet, as from these initial symptoms their condition can rapidly deteriorate.
Other symptoms of tick paralysis include:
A change in the sound of the bark or meow. For example, becoming softer or changes in pitch.
Cannot blink. If ticks become attached near the eyes the eyelids can become paralysed which means they are unable to blink. This can then lead to the eyes drying out and becoming damaged.
Difficulty breathing or rapid breathing. As the paralysis advances the muscles used in breathing become weak. Heavy breathing can occur, this can involve panting, noisy breathing and at times grunting and coughing.
Change in heart rhythm or rate.
Excessive drooling. Paralysis can lead to difficulty swallowing which lead to a build-up of fluid in the mouth and throat.
Wobbly gait, which often starts off from the back legs.
Reluctant to move, stand or jump.
Completely paralysed.

Hi my name is Kempsey, I also answer to Macca.
I was born on the 26/6/2020.
I am a female desexed red cattle dog.
I have had several litters of puppies and they have all found loving homes. I am hoping it is my turn now.
I love love people getting pats and cuddles from them is the best. It takes me a very long time to feel comfortable and safe with other dogs so a home on my own would be great.
I have a high prey drive so pocket pets, cats and children that run around and make a lot of noise can elicit my prey drive.
I am toilet trained. Sleep in my crate, wait for my dinner like a good girl.
If you think I could be a good fit for your family please consider me.

We have someone just a little bit special we would like you to meet. Our gorgeous boy Gilbert. Gilbert came in with a persistently bloated tummy from bowels that just didnโt seem to want to empty. After investigating further and with an X-ray to confirm we found that three of the vertebra in his spine were missing the spaces between them that should have been there. We will never know if it was a dropped or tail pull injury or if he was just born that way. Touching that area was painful for him and it was right where he needs to use it to lift his tail to poop. Thus why he kept backing up. It hurt to lift his tail to go. So the rather unusual solution was decided on to amputate his tail. This has reduced the weight he needs to lift and seems to have helped him start toileting normally. While itโs sad that he needed his tail removed it hasnโt stoooed him in the slightest and he is running round like a little energiser bunny. His favourite game is to hide and jump out and surprise you ๐Gilbert is a high energy kitten but he also loves a cuddle. We are looking for an adult only home for Gilbert. Removing the tail has not removed the tender portion of his spine so he is not suitable for kids as this needs to be remembered when picking him up. Gilbert may be prone to arthritis as he gets older so the adopter must be prepared for any ongoing cost in later life. Currently he does not require any medication. Meet our sweet young fellow Austin. Austin is a super sweet and gentle older kitten who grew up in a machinery shed but is now looking for a proper home and a family to love him.
He is a bit shy around people he doesnโt know but soon comes around and just wants pats and cuddles. He is looking for a quiet home without young children to help make the transition to a real home a little easier for him.

Just a little dose of adorableness for the day. Meet our nine little cattle dog pups. They are now approximately 4 weeks old and starting to really explore. We will keep you updated on them as they grow!
๐ The puppies are not currently available for adoption. We will advertise for expressions of interest in another next couple of weeks.
AWL NSW Shoalhaven Branch offers the following services:
- Caring for surrendered animals
- Adopting dogs, cats, puppies and kittens
- Subsidised Desexing Programs for financially disadvantaged people to have their animals desexed
- Fundraising and events
- Building relationships with local Council and community groups to assist with animal welfare issues in the region including our Pets of the Homeless Program.
As AWL NSW branches are run by volunteers and are always in need of new faces to join their dedicated teams. There are many opportunities available to help animals at your local branch, some of which may include:
Donations: Every branch needs donations in order to survive and continue their work with local animals. Contact your local branch to make a donation, or participate in one of their fundraising events.
Events: Branches regularly participate in events to help raise money for their cause. This may be anything from a BBQ at Bunnings to a stall at a local fair. Events are a great way to be involved with your local branch if you canโt commit to set days every week.
Fundraising: You can raise money for your local branch by initiating your own fundraising activities. Coin drives at your school and placing donation tins at your place of work are great ways you can raise money to help animals.
Foster care: If you have space at your place for an animal awaiting a home you may be able to foster through your local branch. Fostering is a great hands-on experience which gives you the opportunity to see first-hand the difference youโre making.
Animal transportation: Sometimes animals in branch care need to travel for appointments and their foster parents or other branch members may not be available to do it. If you have reliable transportation and would like to โhelp when you canโ you can offer your animal transportation services to your local branch.
Admin: Like all organisations, AWL NSW Branches must complete paperwork and hold regular meetings which require minute taking. If you have admin experience you may be able to lend your skill set to your local branch.
Photography: Branches that are involved in rehoming animals always need good photography to showcase their animals in the best light. If you have a knack for photography and a love of animals your local branch may be able to utilise your skills.
