Preparing Horses for Wet Weather and possible Cyclone: Essential Tips for Safety and Comfort

With unpredictable weather on the horizon, including the possibility of a cyclone, it’s essential to be well-prepared for whatever Mother Nature throws your way. Here are some important steps to ensure your horses are safe, comfortable, and protected during wet weather and cyclone conditions:

1. Stock Up on Supplies

In preparation for heavy rains and cyclones, stock up on essentials:

• Extra feed and hay: Wet weather can limit grazing opportunities, so ensure you have enough food on hand for your horses.
• Fresh water: Have plenty of fresh water available and consider having back-up water sources in case your regular supply is compromised.
• First aid kit: Make sure your horse’s first aid kit is fully stocked with necessary medications, bandages, and wound care supplies.

2. Hoof Care

Wet conditions can create muddy, slippery environments that are tough on your horse’s hooves. Muddy paddocks increase the risk of thrush and other hoof conditions, so regular hoof care is vital.

• Keep your horse’s hooves clean and check regularly for thrush or other infections.
• Spraying horses feet regularly to keep all the nasties out.
• Using appropriate products to create a barrier from the water eg Stockholm tar, hoof balm.

3. Waterproof Gear and Blankets

For horses that will be turned out during wet weather, invest in high-quality waterproof blankets. These will keep your horse dry and warm, especially if they have a thinner coat or are not acclimatized to cooler temperatures.
• Be sure the blanket fits well, preventing rubbing and discomfort.

4. Secure their Paddocks

Before the storm hits, check the condition of your paddocks. Clear the area of any debris, fallen branches, or objects that could potentially harm your horse during strong winds.
• Consider moving horses to safer, higher ground to avoid flooding in areas prone to waterlogging.
• Reinforce gates and fencing to prevent the horses from escaping during high winds or if the gates are damaged.
