Our horses probably believe you can never have too many Smoochies®! However, like all good things, moderation is key. HYGAIN® Smoochies® are designed to be provided in smaller quantities. Generally, we recommend about a handful (or roughly a cup’s worth) per day is plenty for your horse or pony. Did you know that fish oil can improve semen quality?

The lipid (fat) composition of equine semen contains high levels of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), an omega-3 fatty acid crucial for s***m quality (Bazzano et al, 2021). Since horses cannot produce polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) on their own, they rely on their diets to obtain them (Bazzano et al, 2021).

Supplementing with fish oil, rich in DHA, can enhance s***matic cell membrane elasticity and integrity, especially crucial for frozen s***m (Garmsir et al, 2014; Rodrigues et al, 2017). This becomes particularly important when s***m is frozen. The sudden temperature drop can shock and damage the s***m cell membrane, decreasing the quality of semen and potentially impacting reproduction (Rodrigues et al, 2017).

Did you know? By the fourth month of lactation, the nutritional value of the mare's milk rapidly declines (Staniar, 2013). This prompts the foal to seek additional nutrients elsewhere.

Creep feeding is recommended at this time to ensure the foal meets its nutritional requirements for growth and development and to introduce it to hard feed before weaning (Staniar, 2013).

What is creep feeding? It's an enclosure or feeding method where only the foal has access to its hard feed (not the mother). Here are the benefits:
• Compensates for nutrient deficiencies due to decreasing milk quality and quantity.
• Supports consistent optimal growth in changing nutrient environments.
• Reduces digestive upset and weight loss during weaning.
