Found a baby bird? 🐣
If you have found a fledgling, the best course of action is to leave it alone.

It is normal for young birds, called fledglings, to come out of the nest a little bit before they can fly and fend for themselves. Its parents are usually very attentive, and if you can observe it from a distance, you will see the parents feeding it and encouraging it to fly. Though very vulnerable, the fledging stage is a very important part of the bird’s development. The best thing to do for a fledging is to leave it alone, keep the cats and dogs inside or on a leash, and keep people, small children, and lawn mowers away. In some cases, it may be best to place the fledging off the ground in a bush, but it may not stay put.

If you have any questions regarding
Fledgings, please contact The Animal Doctors.

Halloween is one week away. 🎃👻

Here are some safety tips for Halloween, as suggested by Napoleon.🐈‍⬛

⚫️ Please ensure that Halloween sweets are kept out of reach of your pets. Chocolate is toxic to dogs. Chocolate ingestion can result in vomiting, diarrhoea, or even seizures. In severe cases, chocolate toxicity can be fatal. Many lollies contain an ingredient called Xylitol, Xylitol is an artificial sweetener that’s highly toxic to dogs.
⚫️ During the Halloween period, keep an extra close eye on your pets. Make sure they don’t sneak off to trick or chew or bite anything they shouldn’t that can lead to Gastrointestinal blockages (GI Foreign Body Obstructions) which can be common at Halloween usually caused by chewing decorations, lolly wrappers, lollipop sticks, food containers/boxes, or even small parts from a Halloween costume can all cause an obstruction in your dog’s gut. This can be very dangerous and may require surgical intervention. Signs of an obstruction may include your dog being off their food, vomiting, lethargy, and not defecating or finding it difficult to defecate.
⚫️While dressing up pets can be cute and funny, not all pets enjoy dressing up. If your pet is showing any signs of discomfort or unhappiness, don’t force them to wear the costume. Your pet is more likely to continue to be scared and anxious. Costumes should not affect your pets range of motion, their ability to bark, meow, and be extra careful not to obstruct their breathing in any way.
⚫️ Trick or treating is not suitable for all pets. In your pets mind, there is no such thing as a good scare, only bad ones. Scary-looking costumed, sometimes overly excited children that approach for a friendly pat may frighten your dog. If your dog is worried about your neighbourhood decorations or costumed children, it's best to keep them home.

𝗦𝗡𝗔𝗞𝗘 𝗕𝗜𝗧𝗘𝗦

Snakes are common during the warmer months.

Avoiding snake bites in dogs:
Refrain from allowing dogs to be off the lead walks. Avoid in the bush or long grass, especially near water such as rivers, beaches and lakes.
Walk during the cooler hours of the day.

Signs of a snake bite:
symptoms be seen within 30 minutes to 24 hours.
Symptoms include:
• Vomiting or drooling shortly after being bitten
• Bleeding from the wound
• Pale gums
• Lethargy
• Enlarged pupils
• Paralysis
• Collapse/Hind leg weakness
• Rapid, shallow breathing
• Pale gums
Sometimes dogs will vomit and collapse and then seem OK but they are not

If your pet is bitten by a snake:
Keep your pet calm and quiet, and as still as possible, and apply a pressure bandage – a firm bandage placed over and around the bite site – to help slow the venom from spreading to his heart. Discourage dog from walking or running - carry if possible
Do not wash the wound or apply a tourniquet. If you can identify the snake, tell your veterinarian, but don't try to catch or kill the snake.

If you suspect your pet has been bitten by a snake, please contact VRH in Dandenong

The weather forecast suggests that there is a chance of storms today.⛈️
Here are some suggestions from Napoleon for those who have pets with storm phobia.⛈️

⚫Don't punish your pet for being afraid. This is a normal reaction.

⚫Speak with your vet about treating noise phobias through behavioural programs and medical options.

⚫Ensure your pets are wearing ID tags and their microchip details are up to date.

⚫ Ensure your pets are exercised and well fed before the storms start.

⚫Keep your animals indoors in a safe, secure, and comfortable environment.

⚫Leave the TV or radio on to mask any sounds. Spotify has ready-made play lists for calming pets.

⚫Distract them with games, favourite toys, and treats

⚫If your pets are particularly prone to storm panic, stay at home with them if you are able to.
